Haha, I didn't realize this was the video I sent you a voice clip for. So I was just watching your videos over dinner and randomly heard my voice, about choked on my food! Thanks for asking me to be on for this one! Would just love to track down one of these machines someday.
As a Japanese, I've grown up using PC-98 at home and in school. It reminded me of old times. Thanks. Perhaps you could do a video on NEC's PC Engine console an PC Engine GT. I was surprised to see in years later in the movie Enemy of the State as a major prop.
The PC Engine was the only thing NEC managed to bring over here at all in the late 80's/early 80's (as the TurboGrafx 16), I recall wanting one myself back then.
The PC-98 kind of appealed to me for its superior sound chip to the IBM PC speaker and Japanese style graphics (I really want to go to Japan). However, I still think that in the mid to late 1990s, the IBM PC was more powerful (having 3D graphics and Sound Blaster cards.)
+Christopher Sobieniak IBM PC compatibles would exceed the PC-98 in the 1990s, having higher resolutions, 3D graphics (with Quake and 3DFX), and Sound Blaster vards
I am actually going to play some of these games (especially valkyries power beauties it looks aweosme and the hentai game :3 ) later on my GPD XD (android, so emulator) XD They look cool! It's a shame the platform is not known here very much :-( I had never heard of it and I study computer science! But it looks cool!
I used to work at a company that contracted with NEC to provide PC98 developer support in the U.S. I did so much QA testing of various software on PC98 machines. Who knew that it would have retro nostalgia a few decades later.
William Crump I know that, but what i was referring to is the experience of playing it on original hardware. I've already used emulators to play them lol
I'm one of those that thinks Touhou is nothing but really overrated crap tbh... Also, do you REALLY want to mess around the hardware just to play that thing? Stick with your emulators really...
God I love the sound of the YM2608... The YM2203 is cool too. Sometimes, the limitations of a soundchip gives it charm and character, ya know? Really thinking about picking up a PC98... I even have a multisync CRT (NEC XM37 Plus), so I could plug it directly in it and enjoy a great CRT picture. But since I know pretty much nothing about computers, I'm afraid that I'll have trouble getting it running... maybe I'd be best to try and emulate it first Also : that was a terrific vid, as usual. Very well scripted. Your vids have this great balance of : giving lots of detail, yet each description never outstays it's welcome. And the points you choose to discuss are always the coolest, funnest parts of a subject, so that keep things extremely focused. 0% filler here. Loved the skit with the wifey walking on you watching a hentai cutscene, hehe
You know, a lot of people don't want to talk about it, but those 'hentai games' ,or more specifically eroge visual novels, were what most of the founding companies, designers, and producers of the modern jrpg cut their teeth on. Why is this important? The focus on narrative rather than gameplay, using the compactness of the Japanese language thanks to kanji allowed more words to be stored in the same amount of memory, resulted in an ecosystem where it was easier to tell a story to a player rather than just entertain them with a game, sex sells and they were cheap to make. Although the stories would often be deplorable, in the end this resulted in not only the modern day visual novel ecosystem as that developed from it, but also resulted in a large group of Japanese devs working at the companies used to writing stories, and wanting to do something more ambitious. Using their own interpretations of table top games they created the games like the ones they played at the table, but flavored by attempts to tell stories. What this resulted in is the penitent for RPGs to focus on story and the characters, rather than player expression like western RPGs. That's right, if not for those 'hentai games' the JRPG would not have developed in the maner it did. Hurray for hentai!
+ler74 Crap, I mentioned the part about storage in the same about of memory, but I forgot to mention screen space being the later issue Kanji use allowed them to overcome so they could tell stories. If you are interested, Extra Credits did an episode on partially on this subject in their 'western rpg vs jrpg' episodes, but I knew most of it beforehand. I've done a lot of research into the subject. >.>
+The Obsolete Geek Of course it's people still make games like that for the same reasons, I mean nothing is going to change the idea that sex sells, but at least quite a few studios these days use the visual novel, and even the eroge visual novel genres to at least do something worth while and artisically sound. The ecosystem just means that the guys that want to make the ambitious stories (I mean remember this is the logical extension of the choose your own adventure novel as an actual means of story telling) have to do something that, in hindsite, is actually rather deplorable to get thier parent companies to invest. Write pornography into their story to make it sell. The good ones still have great stories to tell, but a lot of them are forced to shoehorn in porn to sell it in an already small but dedicated market. Infact, if it goes on to sell well enough they will strip it of the pornographic content and sell an 'all ages' version on consoles these days (late 90's onward). It's a fantastic(ly under utilized) story presentation when done right, but it loses a lot of credit (and likelyhood of being released) in other markets by having this content at all, but it is growing a nicely sized niche market these days. Of course not all studios are limited to producing them with porn if they are trusted that they will sell enough by the studio that made them's name on the box (like stupid key, 5pb, and nitroplus). I mean they are (mostly) just books with pictures, but with an added layer of depth with choice, what's to dislike unless you just hate reading in general? If I somehow sparked your interest, reddit's visual novel sub put together this really nice recommendation chart sorted by genre/type (vertical) and "newbie friendliness" (horizontal) with plenty of detail for those who care. i.imgur.com/AtfhUOI.jpg
Yeah, absolutely. Remember that Hideo Kojima's biggest early hits (Snatcher, Policenauts) were PC-88/98 visual novels - although he somehow managed to get away without including anything too explicit, which probably helped the success of his games in the Western market. It's only recently that some of the more risque visual novels (such as Yu-No) have been remade without the "sex sells" content - hopefully this trend will continue so more early visual novels will get a wider audience, and their stories will finally get the recognition they deserve. To my knowledge, the only PC-98 visual novels that have been translated to English are Policenauts and Yu-No. I think that if the developers hadn't shoehorned in sexual content, which definitely prevented the genre from gaining traction in the West, many more visual novels would have received an English translation and Western release.
Flame Zapper Kotsujin is one of my favourite shooters, I LOVE it! I can't have enough of its soundtrack either, and it's really impressive too with all the parallax scrolling and hectic action!
If only the pc-98 had fancy midi devices like the X-68000 so you can emulate the music with [insert digital midi device here] so you can change the soundfont (infinite music replayability 👌)
Shitposter Duane Surprisingly enough, it actually did! But Anex86 doesn't support any MIDI module/device though, it's other emulators like T-98 Next and Neko Project II that support them... I know that Touhou, V.G.2 and Valkyrie the Power Beauties support MIDI but I'm not aware of other games that do, but that has to do with the fact that I'm not really interested in MIDI music on the PC-98 because, well, I kind of prefer the FM sound over MIDI >w>';

Awesome stuff. I've been curious about the platform for years, often seeing screenshots on Mobygames etc. so seeing this vid was very welcome. Also, hearing the laidback and friendly LGR as the cut-throat business-wolf Jack Tramiel got a chuckle out of me.
The only Japanese game I have ever played is Touhou 6 on my windows XP Laptop but it broke down A week ago and it had 128MB of ram and that was an awesome laptop and also that was the Computer from the video: Windows 2000 Destruction and that video is my most favorite video I have ever made
For the record, you COULD play PC98 games on normal PCs, if you installed a certain version of DOS V/J which was around in 1998. Sadly, there were plenty of sound issues, and some games were completely unplayable at certain points, but sure you could play the majority of them. "There are a lot of hentai games in the PC98" is a serious understatement. Go check the PC98 archives out there and you will find that the majority of games were actually games with porn or porn with some game. Or at least some gratuitous boobies.
I wonder if there's any PC-98 emulators out there with English support? I'd love to play some PC-98 games (preferably the clean variety) but given that an actual PC-98 would be both expensive to acquire and impossible to run in English, original hardware isn't really an option.

Another similarity of the IBM PC and NEC PC-98-type machines is the 640K conventional memory barrier imposed when running 16-bit real mode applications. The BIOS, peripherals' memory maps and I/O ports are extremely dissimilar, even the partition table is a custom table, not the standard legacy IBM Master Boot Record or the GUID tables used by [U]EFI when it comes to disk partitioning.

Though I've seen the first video I don't think I'll watch this one given you've explained your mistakes/changes. Still, your videos are really good so if there's potential for some to watch it who hasn't then bonus, they get the upgraded version ;)
Why are you dying against Orange in Touhou LLS in Normal Mode after wasting a Bomb ? You know, there is a Focus Button. ...Just kidding. X) Excellent Video about the PC-98.
So, do you play the early Tohou Project games on that PC-98? (unless you were, I haven't seen them myself and wouldn't know what the early ones look like). After all, you *did* mention "ZUN", and I presume you were referring to Team Shanghai Alice/Jun'ya Ota.
those japanise are grast game makers :) why they did not made those games IBM compatible it shoud not be to hard becides the platform is the same x86 :) and we on the regular IBM machines get only crap games with some exceptions :( westerns where very bad at making games in those years :P take NES for an example or MegaDrive or any other cances :P
You should definitione check Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO - probably the best sci-fi scenario ever created (including books, movies etc). Not mentioning about mindblowing OST.
How much did your PC98CS2 cost you? I wanna get one sometime though I'm having a tough time settling on what a fair price is for one of them (the only one on Yahoo! right now is $200)
+SpeedySPCFan I gambled on mine (untested) and bought it for about $12 on Yahoo Japan (+$100 to ship it!). This was in 2014. It worked, but all of the capacitors were leaking and had to be changed. The CPU accelerator was around $75 including shipping if I remember correctly.

I'm trying to emulate this system/translate some of the games (specifically sotsugyo graduation rn) so it's cool to see what normally runs on it. Also touhou!
I wonder if these computers are still around, eventhough outdated and no longer sell them.
wait where did clint from LGR come from
One day, man... one day.
Almost worth a trip to Japan just to grab one for cheap...
you forgot to mention port dos into pc-98 games such as wolf3d, doom, flashback, and many.
So...how does one program for the PC-98? It's...well, a PC with extra stuff in it and maybe a custom OS or something.
That soft slap in the face was cute! lol
You used a bomb on the first boss on normal mode in lls?
I get to stage 4 on hard mode with no bombs
This was informative and funny.
Excellent Video about the PC-98.
is it compatible with pc88? was there a big price differente?, I mean why would anybody buy pc88 instead of pc98 if this is superior
You are amazing
So, do you play the early Tohou Project games on that PC-98? (unless you were, I haven't seen them myself and wouldn't know what the early ones look like). After all, you *did* mention "ZUN", and I presume you were referring to Team Shanghai Alice/Jun'ya Ota.
6:43 they showed a clip of lotus land story so they at least play that one
This video was marked for kids by COPPA.
wow :) can those cool shooter games run on regular IBM compatible PC under DOS/Windows ? and from where can I download them ? :)
is there a way to play those games on regular IBM DOS machine without emulator :)
:( it is so stupid to emulate the same platform :D only bevouse ot chipset and memory adress diferences :P :(
those japanise are grast game makers :) why they did not made those games IBM compatible it shoud not be to hard becides the platform is the same x86 :) and we on the regular IBM machines get only crap games with some exceptions :( westerns where very bad at making games in those years :P take NES for an example or MegaDrive or any other cances :P
Interesting machine.I think I'll get one.
cool video! ^^ but

Valkryie - The Power Beauties OST: Frozen Moonlight

What's the Cs2 PSU's wattage if anyone knows?
which commander keen DOS game was he playing at the beginning of the video?
Commander keen 1
Took 3 bullet hell games to get to touhou.
7:17 tell me the title NOW
wow, just, wow. WHY?? you must be downright insane.
yeah kinda
Valkyrie: The Power Beauties
Palm oil
rude breaker looks an awful lot like Tyrian, (a game i love) even the soundtrack somewhat resembles it
2:18 Did he just say Vice-*A*-Versa?
