Drawing an oval with a compass and no string (very simple)

  • This is an easy method for drawing a general-purpose oval shape. This method requires you change your compass setting 3 times, thus, 1-2-3. If the first setting has radius 1, the second setting has radius 2, and the third setting has radius 3. The largest circle is tangent to both of the smaller circles at the same time, and so it becomes difficult to discern where the curve changes from one circle to the other (after the construction lines have been removed). We are pattern recognizing machines, and so our eyes are quickly fooled into seeing an oval, rather than seeing the intersection of four circles. A similar technique may be used to draw an egg, by changing the size of one of the two smaller circles. Based on the relative popularity of this video, I may make an egg-tutorial in the future.
    By the way, this is not actually a true ellipse. If you would like to see how to make one of those, follow the link at the end of this video.

    Sorry to disappoint, but a true ellipse is too complex to be drawn with a fixed-radius compass. The mechanism you are looking for is called the 'trammel of Archimedes.' Conveniently, I also have a video about that. I will post a link to it at the end of this video.

    Nice demo, thanks! I came here from "bullshit grinder" which most people say is completely useless, just meant as a joke. But it turns out to be a "trammel of archimedes" - a machine that will trace an ellipse. A mathematically proper one I think ( the maths is in wiki) . Of course a person has to decide whether it's worth bothering to make the machine! Pins and string are easier, but it's nice to see your compasses approximation, which could be the quickest in some circumstances. Cheers!

    Hey, i have a transom window, and i want to cut a piece of plywood in a half oval that fills the window, any easy way to make it symmetrical and the highest point in the top middle of the window?

    • @pocket83squared
      @pocket83squared Год назад

      The oval shape in this video is NOT a true ellipse. If your transom window is elliptical, then you might want to try drawing the shape with a string and two nails. It's an easy procedure, but it's a bit difficult to explain here in a comment. Give it a search, and if you still have trouble, come back and get me.

    Hi'
    I am trying to learn how to make perfect rings to a gas giant exoplanet I am oil painting.
    Can you make a narrower elliptic shape with a compas too?
    I saw the string method.
    But I don't have the tools for that.

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  4 года назад

      This "oval" is really just four tangent circles. For realism, you're probably after an _actual_ ellipse. To draw one of those, you will need to use a device. You can use something as simple as a string or as complex as a 'Trammel of Archimedes.'
      An ellipse is a continuously changing curve, so it is not possible to draw one with a standard compass.
      If you just want a 1-2-3 oval that's thinner at its minor axis, try playing around with three or four center circles, and see if you like how it looks.
      As an artist, you might try sketching/modeling an ellipse by looking at a circle with one eye closed; as you begin to turn it flat, it will appear to pass through every possible elliptical shape.

    It's not criticism, but I think that you may want to know how to create shapes more appealing to the eye as an art form to include into your projects.
    And a heads up for that is B-Splines (NURBS) 3rd order most frequently with few control points (4), and few knots. If you are interested in this, research this on the web and find programs able to create B-splines (maya, alias autodesk, and other, yet it may sound an overkill to use such a program just for a B-spline)

  • @AsiAzzy
    @AsiAzzy 11 лет назад

    Good enough for a picture frame, but still there is a key thing:
    Some shapes are pleasant, some are not. Like sound and noise.
    For that, a first thing to learn in a design (automotive) is to use very few vertices, preferably 3 for any given line on that car/object.
    So.. in other words a NURBS curve 3rd degree will look good anyway. (because.. idk, just the same with sound, why a major scale sounds right but if misplaced a note sounds awful?)
    Otherwise it is a solution for an "ugly" shape.

      "Oval" is a nondescript; the title does not claim to demonstrate how to draw a strict ellipse.
      Most people clearly aren't as smart as you, so they can't tell the difference. But given your wit, you already know that it's not possible to use a fixed-radius compass to draw an infinitely variable elliptical curve.
