    We call the corn dog plant "cat tails" and they are pretty useful. Can use the "corndog" part for starting fires and you can eat the root. the stalk can be used when making a shelter.

      I remember years ago some crazy kids would set them on fire on Halloween for kicks.

  • @LadyDragonsblood
    @LadyDragonsblood 7 лет назад +28

    Actually the "corn dog" plants as you call them.... are cattails.... they are a little known source of super food..... you eat them fried in a little butter or maybe olive oil..... you strip them down to the white inner core, and that is the part you cook and eat. They can also be ground and used like rice, or flour. Also, they can be used to make furniture......... one rule of thumb though..... best not to just pick and eat ones that are in swampy or stale water..... but thought you would like to know they ARE actually edible!

    • @galenlong1441
      @galenlong1441 7 лет назад +2

      LadyDragonsblood it is the root of the cattail that you eat. kinda tastes like a potato.

    • @LadyDragonsblood
      @LadyDragonsblood 7 лет назад

      Galen Long I know....but you have to strip it down first.

    • @truestory1447
      @truestory1447 7 лет назад +2

      LadyDragonsbl We use to soak them in kerosene and use them as torches. They would burn for a long time.

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 7 лет назад +1

      Yep - in camp we learned to strip and grind them into flour and baked bread. It was OK - like most "nutritious" things, the flavor was nothing to write home about Why can't stuff that's good for you taste like candy or something? :-)

    • @LadyDragonsblood
      @LadyDragonsblood 7 лет назад

      MrJest2 LOL... because if things good for you tasted good..... we would OVER eat them! At least that's how my mom explained it...LOL

    When you walk directly on the oil patch, it adheres to your shoes and stays with you for a long long time. or at least till you hit carpet that gets in the grooves of your shoes.
    Those lines in parking lots that normally are clean and fresh. A good place to trek.

    Good morning Adam....long time viewer first time comment. The item in the blacksmiths? ...Belows. The Smithy would stand at his forge and anvil and only had to reach up and pull down on the wooden poll or "branch" to force air into the coals for more heat. That's the way they mostly do it today if the don't use electric fans....mostly. Thank you for allowing all of us into your life Adam. It's so nice to know I always have something to make my day start with a smile. Amazing job brother, stay strong, be safe and always stay true to yourself. I'll see you tomorrow...comment over.

    That place reminds me of the Geico slasher movie commercial. "Why can't we just get in the running car?" "Are you crazy? Let's hide in the barn with all these dangerous farm implements!" Jason Voorhees would be... ;-)

  • @garyallsebrook3493
    @garyallsebrook3493 7 лет назад

    Just a few things: the first item was a forge used to shape horseshoes, mainly and other shapes. The bellows products enough air to substantially increase the temperature to the eutectic point. The hook is for rangling hay bales ( which Harold pointed out, although it would make for a great torture device ;-)

    Hey Adam, at 8:09 that's a bale hook, easier to grab the handle on the hook and hook it into a hay bale for lifting when you're stacking bales. They are also used for just about any commodity that can be packaged into bales. Cotton, alfalfa, rag cloth, etc., you heard the term "use no hooks", that told dock workers not to use them because they would damage the baled product. Like animal hides, put a hook in a bale of those and you have holes in your leather resulting in loss, because who wants a hole in the toe of their new shoes. 8:17 that's your ice hook, actually, ice tongs.

  • @easternjohnny
    @easternjohnny 7 лет назад

    the ice pick is a hay bale claw, you use it to move a bale usually there two of them , but if strong enough you can move them, and can be used for other bales and if northern are used for ice blocks

    The overhead pole in the blacksmith's shop was used to work the bellows. The smith would pull the free end of the pole down then release it to raise and lower the handle of the bellows. The air from the bellows would run through he pipe into the forge and would increase the heat of the fire. It saved the smith from having to run back and forth between the bellows and the forge every time he needed more heat and kept him close to the anvil where he was working the metal.

    growing up, my grandma had an outhouse for a long time, up till at least 1979, even though she had indoor plumbing. I loved using the outhouse as a little kid - she lived on a couple of acres of land and there weren't really any houses around, so... she and grandpa bought the house when it was all farmland.

    Happy Earth Day Adam! Yup the majestic butterfly is indeed an insect :) I am a total bug nerd! My front yard is a certified Monarch Waystation by Monarch Watch. I raise them from eggs to caterpillars to butterflies. They are then released back into the wild. The Monarchs in the fall are tagged with my waystations number to help with data tracking for the migration season. There are a lot of us crazy bug nerds or citizen scientists out there helping to save the Monarch :)
