  • Verno and KOC go through the most intriguing rookie debuts from over the weekend, starting with Jared McCain and Adem Bona with the 76ers. Next, they discuss Zach Edey’s impressive debut with the Grizzlies and why he’ll fit perfectly in Memphis alongside Ja Morant. Also, the guys discuss who they are most excited to watch at this year’s summer league in Las Vegas, why they like DeMar DeRozan signing with the Kings, and how the Spurs’ offseason has set them up for success now and into the future.
Got a question for Verno and KOC? Send them an email at nbamailbag@gmail.com!
Or you can send the guys a tweet @ChrisVernonShow and @KevinOConnorNBA!

Kings defense the last 55 games: 10th
    Kings D after ASB: 4th
Fox: lead the league in steals
    Murray: 1st in iso defense
    Ellis' defense speaks for itself
Is their defense perfect? Definitely not. But those in the national media saying they got worse are just wrong. Harrison quite literally would stand in the way & do nothing else. Demar is probably the best free agent Sac has ever signed. We got better in every way with this signing

If their defense wasn’t a concern they’d be top 5 title favorites
They need to have Keon be in the starting lineup next year. I saw they were a top 5 unit when he was in the rotation.

Especially when he would end up just ruining the spacing anyways just standing in the dunkers spot like a doofus.

How the hell did you not mention Cam Spencer? Also GG Jackson played the WORST summer league game ever from a second year player in that first game. Kings will not finish above 9th place and will have the WORST def rating in history.

Memphis is not a contender even if all goes their way. They should be playoff team , but lets remember they lost to lakers last time around in the first round. They didnt look much better since. JJJ has problem stayin on the floor, Ja has same problem, different reasons. How good is a roster around them remains to be seen, talent is mediocre to ok, but fit is unknown - they havent played with Smart and smart didnt look good since he came to Memphis. Since you guys are much smarter about basketball I wonder what Im missing?

As far as the Kings, Barnes was a solid defender. Nothing special. Also, DeRozan is taking Heurter's spot, who's godawful defensively. They can now rest Fox more. Yes, he's older, but Barnes is almost 33.

    • @shawn9366

Barnes was a negative defender last year. In 12 years watching Derozan I’ve never heard anyone give a shit about his defense but the second he’s on the Kings he’s some “massive downgrade” it’s a joked

@@shawn9366 As a Kings fan, I can't say that I've ever really watched him too much. As far as HB, I appreciate the guy, bur he's a solid role player. A seventh or eighth player on your roster. He's just not good enough to be a team who wants to be a legitimate playoff threat

Derozans defense was exploited because he was often playing SF and playing in Small ball lineups where everyone is switching. Lavine and Vucevic don’t defend well, and Caruso was often playing PF.
So yeah, not sure what the kings lineups are like, but I don’t think his defense is nearly as bad in a competent team.
