John, get the NVRAM upgrade kit for this and you won't have any issues with switching PS causing setting/score resets. Did that in both my joust and robotron and it works like a CHAMP! The upgrade also eliminates the need for a battery on the board as well.
Really appreciate the video. I'm nervously getting ready to make this exact installation on my Defender. I've had the new power supply sitting in the box for almost a year now and this video is exactly what I needed to nudge me along. Wish me luck!
Hey when you have a pcb go bad you could just put a 19n1 in there and have it boot to robotron, you could have just hung a 100watt bulb inside for coin door lights that would have been easy too.
In Joust, the bulbs are powered with AC. My Joust has separate wiring from the Happ supply to the coindoor with a fuse thrown in for good measure. Yours was wired OK, it was just wired for AC.
Hey John, after quickly looking at one of your previous videos, those coin door lights were definitely working before. From the Schematic that I have, it looks like that 6.3vac was originally coming from one of the transformer windings (through a fuse on the linear power supply). If you do go back to the linear power supply, you might want to change the coin door light wiring back to the way I was; Otherwise, you'll have one side of that transformer winding connected through the lights, to DC ground. That 27v (red) wire looks like is for coin lockout. I don't think that switcher has a 27v output, but may be of no consequence if you always use free play.
hey john, those coin door lights were working, i just checked your last journey vid in january this year at the start of the video when your strolling thru your basement. i just noticed some1 else pointed this out in the comments as well, just to reiterate.
if you have issues where you need the cap figure out what lines the cap goes too and hook a diode from the line in too the cap with a coindore light between the diode and the cap and on the other end a nother diode so that the power can only go in durring play and out wen the power is out.
I would love to see the original power supply fixed. It is some major catharsis for me, watching you fix all those things. I've had to get rid of many things, which wouldve been fixable but I just didnt know how, Always makes me feel bad, but seeying you fix everything kind of makes up for it.
I know you would have preferred to fix the original supply. But, projects are piling up. This way you know it was the power supply, and you can fix the old one once some of the other projects are complete. I had to do the same thing recently, and bought a rebuilt carb for my ATV because it did not seem like I would have time to rebuild mine before the trip I am planning. I will rebuild the old one later...
hey John I've been watching some of your control panel videos once you put on the stripper use a power washer to blow it clean works way better than the scraper
"HEY GUYS!!!" - my fav. part of every video - way too happy, but then again John has a fun arcade in his basement -maybe he will add ''Lady Bug'' someday - pacman with spelling. PS: Sooo much gesturing in Part 1, John almost spilled his drink
Looks a quick and easy job to do, and looks like a quick and easy job was done too, those AC feed wires look tacky. And what was that noise at 38:07? I found it hard to concentrate after that sound, all I could think about is how high the frequency of the sound was, and possibly why! Love you and your Vids, keep them coming :~)
John ! you took the easy way out man ! (By installing a switcher), You really have become an operator haven't you ! The pre-operator John would have rebuilt the original.... By the way, you introduced the problem with the coin door lights with that switcher ! I hope this was just to get the game going and your going to rebuild that linear PS ?
Oh god. Yes, I installed the switcher because of the Hangar. As I explained, I didn't have the parts to rebuild in time but I had the Switcher. Guess what? There's a switcher in my Zoo Keeper, Journey, and Burgertime too. We might revisit the linear when I get the rebuild kit.
Yeah I did hear you say you didn't get the parts in time. The operator line was a joke BTW :-P I don't know the history of your Zookeeper & Burgertime, but Journey I do remember and I was surprised you didn't throw those 2 filter caps in before going the switcher route.
That works too. LOL! Robotron and Joust are pissy with switchers in them. They end up with memory corruption because the +5 and +12 come to full voltage at the same time on the switcher. This leaves the CMOS open to writes when the CPU still hasnt fully started. Like I said, I've got an adapter that I made that would allow you to use that switcher for +5 ONLY and would eliminate the CMOS failure down the road. Just LMK if you want it. :) This is for John only you wacko's!
Hey John, have you ever heard of the game Athena? It's made by SNK, released in 1986 I believe. If you haven't I recommend you try it, very interesting game, but very difficult
Just curious what is the price comparison on rebuilding power supply opposed the the new one. I understand there is the time spent but I was curious on the cost.
Wild Gunman from the movie isn't the NES version. It has a very smoother framerate so, I guess, it's just an ''animation'' for the movie and not a real game.
Ok, so now I'm at 43:00 and someone messed with the wiring in the last couple months OR, the new power supply corrected the right way for wiring? Interesting. lol
Hi John great repair video 😊 I was just wondering if having both 5 volts going to the coin door the way they were before you fixed the problem would have caused the problem with your old power supply? would it have caused some kind of short? Anyway keep up the good work and I can't wait to see your future garage videos 😊
The transformer can't be rebuild. You have the solution right there with the fresh power supply. Next would be the high score ram. Then a solution for the plug from the sound board the the ram board.
The wii and wii u are 2 of the best consoles for gun games because of the wiimotes.... "how did you play that on wii u" indeed John lololol. I have RE Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles for wii awesome games.
I was in a rush, so I might be mistaken. I'll check again and post a video and timestamp if I'm right. It was near the end of a 6 month old Robotron Vid. I'll look when I get into work.
I try to enter the raffle it would not allow me to sign in weeks before the raffle was to begin Maybe somebody put a virus in the software so that the person that one last time could win this time what do you think coincidence not
hey I just bought a pac man arcade cab and when I plug it in it has no picture and makes a loud er sound do you know what is wrong. One thing I found wrong is the transformer is supposed to put out 7v 7v and 12v 12v but its giving 7v 7v 10v 9v. im thinking about putting a switching power supply kit in it. thanks please help.
RPI DUDE replace the fuse holders to start with. they are always flaky on Pac machines then check for 5v D.C. On the pcb. Could also be the edge connector.
well i measured the voltage before the fuse holders. I measured them on the actual transformer and its getting 9 and 10 volts, and the pcb is getting 9 and 10 volts instead of 12. Im gonna buying a switching power supply kit but if their is a way not to please let me know
Williams boards do NOT like switchers. They don't have the filter circuit to handle switched power. Your high score table will corrupt or reset and your game will watchdog randomly. Get a Get Well Kit for your linear, rebuild it and enjoy for the next 15-20 years. My Robo got a DeOxit treatment on the connectors, a new Wells K7000 monitor back in 2002 and I rebuilt the linear. 15 years later, still solid.

If they want new games, especially driving games, etc. those can be several thousand a piece. But they don't have much detail on the kickstarter page in general. The hallmark of failed kickstarters is not enough information and specifics. Wouldn't surprise me if this fails. Hope not.
How can the guy win twice something sounds fishy, it is impossible to win twice it is a randomly generated isn't it ?? he should be banned from the next! competition
John sweda, It's not impossible, a random chance means any choice is possible. It's certainly slim odds to be selected twice, but definitely not impossible. Also keep in mind this was a relatively small entrance pool, there are only 36k subscribers and I thank only a small percentage actually entered.
Why didn't you mention track and field, why don't you put it in the hanger ? it will be a good earner I believe. You never mention about track and field why is this is it stolen
TxJayYT I meant did he steal it! Because he will not put the game out in public, I can't understand why he won't put it in the hanger? And never give me an answer to this? Its got to be a good money earner.
Bob talks about the coin door may short out which will blow your switcher so he installs a 5 amp fuse to prevent that. I like that you get your ground from the coin door but you still might want to install an inline fuse just to be safe. Cheers.
The drawing was fixed when I tried to sign up the sign-up page had some kind of block and would not let me sign up for the drawing. My conclusion the drawing was fixed
Why would I fix a raffle? For what benefit? I used Rafflecopter like I have in the past. Never had any complaints about it before. I had over 3,000 entries so I'd say it worked fine.

I have had fantastic success with my Arcadeshop power supply kits: Robotron, Joust, Sinistar.
Hey when you have a pcb go bad you could just put a 19n1 in there and have it boot to robotron, you could have just hung a 100watt bulb inside for coin door lights that would have been easy too.
+Bobby Jack lol
Glad to see the Robotron is back up and running, I would probably just keep it that way.
In Joust, the bulbs are powered with AC. My Joust has separate wiring from the Happ supply to the coindoor with a fuse thrown in for good measure. Yours was wired OK, it was just wired for AC.

3rd video in 7 days! Thank you sweet baby Jesus!
YAY! More Videos! But Also Where The Hell Was John's Kitchen?

NOW I'M A BIG BELIEVER IS SWITCHERING.
Great to see. So glad to get a massive dose of Johns Arcade. :-)
NVRAM on the main pcb will fix any high score / settings saving issues if they come up.
Great video, I wish Pole Position had better attract sounds, turned mine off.

This was refreshing to see, Chief. Thank you.

6:10 "It's really quick and painful". um.. ;)
I think we've learned something about John today. :)
LOL. Noticed that too! Must be because it's -12v ?? Kidding aside, John is a super busy guy and isn't perfect! But we knew what he meant!
I love watching you work and I love your personality John don't get me wrong please I'm just reporting from the front lines
no John's Kitchen this weekend? lol. I thought it was becoming an April 1st tradition?! maybe next year..
I might do one soon. Timing was such I couldn't pull it off on Saturday.

you should earth ground the switcher, and I always field fit a jumper from ground to earth on the switchers.
If you guys open a location in Westfield or closer to Springfield, I will check you out guys. Keep up with the great videos :)
Hey John, have you ever heard of the game Athena? It's made by SNK, released in 1986 I believe. If you haven't I recommend you try it, very interesting game, but very difficult
Wild Gunman is on the Playchoice.
+Tom Davis huh. I stand corrected.
Are you the Tom Davis that sended BitHead stuff?
That was me!
Just curious what is the price comparison on rebuilding power supply opposed the the new one. I understand there is the time spent but I was curious on the cost.

Wait a minute!!! What happened to this year's episode John's Kitchen?!?
how man time is a belmont going to die in this video... I use the dead sound for a notification on my phone. I have to stop looking at my phone LOL

got it now John 😊
I was behind on your videos so in future I'll watch your latest one before I add my comment 😀

I quickly skipped through an old Robotron episode and the lights were on. I'm sure he thought of that
Really? I don't think so. how could they be?
I was in a rush, so I might be mistaken. I'll check again and post a video and timestamp if I'm right. It was near the end of a 6 month old Robotron Vid. I'll look when I get into work.
You might be right. I understand more now since I made this vid. :)
Just watched past where you fixed them, that is odd isn't it
I randomly picked the "Let's finally fix that Polo monitor" MKII vid and the Robotron coin door lights were on in the initial walkthrough.
Great job! 👍
I try to enter the raffle it would not allow me to sign in weeks before the raffle was to begin Maybe somebody put a virus in the software so that the person that one last time could win this time what do you think coincidence not

I just got a robotron today, and I think it's having a power supply issue.but it also has a rotted cabinet, what would you do about that?
also i got those same loose wires in my coin door
Jon, the phone you have in this video, it looks huge, what is it?
is no one else pissed. where the hell is johns kitchen. I've been making pasta and castle burgers everyday now I need a new recipe. my heart it hurts
+Fox ARCADES soon?
I have Wild Gunman for my Playchoice 10

John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech you could always put some sort of filtering on it...?
Awwww, too bad I lost the raffle. T_T Oh well, I'll try and win the next one. ;)
you need a new CONTROL PANEL OVERLAY on Robotron
38:07 what was that sound?
great video once again John I think you should just leave it with you rebuilding the old power supply all your doing is wasting time and money
1:00:45 Hmm, never thought about that.
John it's an arcade game look it up please cause I played it when I was young in the gas station
What is?
Wild Gunman, it was with Hogans Allie
At the new power supply

Not fixing the old power supply? whatever happened to keeping the games original? lol.. no, I get it, the other games need to be fixed first.

John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I know it's in your basement. I was wondering why you don't put it... in the hanger.
I believe you also asked if it was "stolen". That is what John is responding to.
TxJayYT I meant did he steal it! Because he will not put the game out in public, I can't understand why he won't put it in the hanger? And never give me an answer to this? Its got to be a good money earner.
ffs I'm shouting at the screen undo the fukin screws man..

Bob Roberts explains the coin door problem you're having....www.therealbobroberts.net/wmslamps.html
Really weird. So.... my coin door was wired correctly? Makes sense... it was two AC lines going to it. So, I removed one and added the ground. Got it.
Bob talks about the coin door may short out which will blow your switcher so he installs a 5 amp fuse to prevent that. I like that you get your ground from the coin door but you still might want to install an inline fuse just to be safe. Cheers.
Ok, this is good advice. I think we will revisit this. It all makes sense now.
Why doesn't Arcadeshops switcher address that? they have the plug for the coin door.... Good question to address John!!!! :)
+Mac Donalds yes I do. I realize now what is going on. I'm gonna do a follow up video.
