To quote Jim Sterling: "If history forgets this game, then fuck history."
i loved this game so much. it broke me for other games. :(
Witcher 3 and the Blod and Wine DLC, just do it :D
Witcher is a game grown with as much of live from its devs as Automata and you as player can ENJOY it.
Love from the devs to their games can be felt. So lets say if you made me chose beetween two precious loved badass games id rather hate you for make someone choose only one :P
I'm actually playing through Witcher 3 (with all DLCs)... its an awesome, beautiful game, but for some reason it doesn't hit the same spot as NieR/Automata did. I can confidently say Witcher 3, as a whole, is an EXTREMELY polished open world high fantasy game. NieR, on the other hand, I can't place it anywhere that does it justice. Perhaps its the guts to try such an outrageous style of gameplay (and succeeding) that truly sets it apart.
I haven't played a game I loved so much since Witcher 3. It's just brilliant.
I beat it over a month ago and still can't stop thinking about this fucking game. It's a masterpiece.
I don't see in the least what games like the Witcher have to do with Nier. I would mention Metal Gear Rising as its a similar game by the same devs with amazing design. The witcher looks like its photoshopped, no minimal design elements but lush and overly affected. Sorry, but I hated the witcher 3 and I loved skyrim though for pure aesthetic reasons. Nier is in another league of games.
Everytime I read a post of "This game sucks cuz there's no save in the beginning!" And my response now is this video. Because too many games now are ez pz. This game is amazing af.
Not saving in the beginning was a breath of fresh air. It reminded me playing old school games where you actually had to TRY to get to the first save/checkpoint.
I didn't even realise it didn't have it :D
I was SO happy to find that the game isn't keen on babysitting me. No autosaves? Restricted saving spots like in the old JRPG days? Hell yeah! Death finally has a meaning again, it is more than just "auto-reload last auto-save". And then the twist of recovering your own body and looting other players bodies. God, I can't remember ever enjoying dying so much in a game while groaning at the same time, knowing I'd have to go back and get my gear. ;)
I know I'm 6 months late to this comment but I'm just now playing it. Its absolutely incredible. People bitching about the save system is funny. It's not like the game is punishing. Maybe on the one hit kill difficulty, but I'm playing it on hard and have died twice in 25 hours. The game isn't by any means hard but it doesn't have to be. I'm taking my time with it... doing every side quest. I don't want it to end.
It would be great if not for the random crashes on PC forcing you to redo the same shit over and over again no matter how good you are
You can tell a lot about a person based on what title screen they have in this game
White sword title screen ftw!
Hello my white sword title screen friends.
I did not sacrifice my save because i'm an egoistic bastard 😞
I am waiting for all achievements. Then I'll give up my save file, so I could reexperience it again.
How do you get the white sword screen? Ending E?
This is the best game of the generation so far
Lord Blue balls i would argue for me at least this past decades games to top as best would be Nier. A , witcher 3, and bloodbourne.
I cant decide on which one was truly the best
Nier A is great but Dmc 5 and Doom also exists.
@@returnedtomonkey8886 dmc 5 was okay, just okay. played, was bored most of the times until like final boss stuff?
Bayonetta has better gameplay imo
Yes! I'm so glad someone could intelligently explain WHY the tutorial is like this. (I was really not used to Bullet Hell the first time and did get kicked around a bit on normal until I figured out the dodge)
I also liked how you pointed out that all the sections control the same, some of my friends who watched me play thought it looked a bit "insane" but I just couldn't explain how it felt so easy to swap between modes.
Played the demo. On hard. Felt like a boss. Bought the game. Started it on hard, confident in my abbilities. Pooped out tears. Out every possible hole it could come out of, in every kind of form and incarnation. SO a light dawned upon me calling something out to me "....You suck...play on normal" i grasped those words and liketthe bitch i was didn;t look back, until I saw the savescreen. I tried to cry tears of joy, but i was already dried up during my hard mode attempts. Currently On Route C.
“2B, the main character of this game”
Boy were you wrong haha
I mean he’s not wrong. She’s one of our 3 main characters.
fuck now i have to rewatch it i lost you the moment the sountrack started playing
The OST for this game is entirely to good. Top shelf Square!
Dark Souls taught me to appreciate this games tutorial.
I love how that part teaches you that the game love switching perspectives mid-battle.
Man...I'm so glad I'm not the only one who spent 8 hours on that tutorial
10:51
"... who kills ro-butts"
Am I the only one who heard that?
Blame Canada.
You heard correct! I don't know why I said it that way but I just kinda did.
Lol, I know you are Canadian the same way I know Kar is the greatest Overwatch player ever and Sempai II: The Noticing is a great listen.
I think there is a space and place for games that add knowledge through playing and showing rather then telling. It is what made me love half life and no longer want or play mindless shooters (doom aside :D). You had no cut scenes everything happened in front of you. I am glad this game not only exists but that is was done so well and the fans have shown it so much love.
Thank you for this video Orange Hatter! I'm really interested in getting the game for myself soon after seeing multiple videos on it, but I really liked your video best.
You were able to go in depth without sounding like you were scripted or uninterested. Your voice and narrative skills were engaging, your jokes were well made and weren't just cheap attempts at comedy, and your intonation sounds natural. You don't sound artificially enthusiastic, and neither do you sound plain and unemotional. I sat through 28 minutes just watching your video without skipping, holding my phone in my hand in front of me, and not once did I feel like it was tiring to hold up in front of my face. Whatever tiredness and soreness I had on my hand and elbows we're only felt after the video ended, because for the rest of the time, I was firmly focused on your content and enjoyed every single thoughtful thing you said in it.
Good job! And you've probably got a very firm following of people on your channel, but if it means anything, you're the first game-related channel I'll be subscribing to. Please, keep this momentum up, you're doing an incredible job, and I thought you deserve just as much praise as the games you review, if not even more so ^^
Did you ever get it? Did you like it??
Gotta be honest, I beat the game completely and I never noticed that heavy attacks destroy the purple bullets I feel really dumb right now
Your squad-mates are intentionally letting themselves to be shot, since they thought that that was a possible way of going off grid and living independently of YoRHa. When you finish the factory part in the beginning, and get out of the "tutorial". There will be a shot down YoRHa unit near the first downed chainsaw boss (The point at which you meet 9S first). And her log will say something along those lines, but she had been damaged in the shot, and was unable to repair herself, so she just died.
Otherwise, your video is quite nice! :)
I actually had to complete the game entirely 3 times, pain in the ass I should say but it's pretty darn cool.
1- PS4 decided to corrupt it's software and i lost all my gamesaves
2-Reset it for the true ending and the dope background
3-My current Normal Level 93 save. About to probably do a 4th to finish the game on Very Hard just to increase the size of my E-Dick
props to you for finishing it on Hard tho, Normal's locking is pretty good for Melee and Pod Programs like Volt or Hammer.
0:03 this background.. Say no more, you got my like already.
No way I could even consider not taking that plunge.
This game is GOTY for me and persona :D
a MUST play
1:22 what are you saying. until the c route everything was a tutorial.
Prologue, not tutorial. :)
Bruh, I ended up doing this freaking tutorial for 19 hours just because I was picky in conserving my consumables. I regret it knowing how easy it is getting those back later in the game, and yes this was in hard mode.
1:55 you can find a log in the game from the operator that was shot down, detailing how she wanted to get shot down in order to abandon yorha. She ended up being mortally wounded and was not able to repair herself, and then tried to reestablish communications with yorha. She was unsuccessful of this and died
The designers of the mechanics , story telling , fucking THE BEST.
This might be the first half-hour voice over video on RUclips that I've enjoyed to the point that I didn't want it to end.
Looking at it in my recommended section: it's a half hour. ...but the title is so strong and representative of something universally interesting that I gave it a shot. Lo and behold, the video's contents are actually an extension of the type of interest that the video title arouses.
I learned things that allowed me to enrich my appreciation of the prologue - especially because I love how it demands your refinement on multiple levels as a gamer.
Another thing: this video isn't "overthinking." These details arouse your interest and enthusiasm for a reason, and there are many minds on Earth that are relate to your interest at this depth. You don't need to defend yourself from people who don't share that interest or who, due to negative biases, are repulsed by it. There's an abundance of kin to connect to.
So... was I the only one that played this on Normal?
I played nier in normal too, don't worry
Cobaltios nah I did too and I'm about to do it again
usually Hard mode is the way to go but....this game hard mode is LEGIT, dont recomend it. Normal is more tan enough
I played normal and even switched to easy at times because I suck at reacting to things on screen (little bit of eye problem).
I played it on Easy so I could have Auto Fire on lol
Great video!
Another aspect that makes this tutorial so incredible is that it works on its own as a spectacular demo, which I image must've been so very useful during development for showing it to new players (or let's players and streamers starting the game).
It not just teach the game - its also super flashy, has a self-contained story, and gives a blooded tooth to play more!
11:12 What? We're trying not to look up 2B's skirt? I've played the game wrong!
Perfect traning stage. Right in the middle, a ton robot, minimal help bout the controlling, no save and a colosal boss just cuz why not.. I love this scene.. love N:A and I was love this demo
Having watched multiple people utterly fail to notice pod programs, how the dodge function works, the very fact your flier has a sword, etc... I can't agree that the tutorialization in the game is flawless.
The robots do look cute!
And yet I murdered them in the thousands..
Yoko Taro has kind of a thing for making the player occasionally just slaughter huge numbers of cuties or innocents. Goes all the way back to Drakengard 1, where Caim gleefully murdered child conscripts by the dozens.
I´m in love with this game, i always learn something new about it, and i still have some doubts about some mechanics, like the black diamonds next to a chip, still don´t know what they mean. Now i´m playing through it again in hard mode (no more aim lock) i´ve played around 100hr and i still love it, it becomes like a part of you. Btw great video. Keep it up. Cheers
Ps: Oh and just found about this. Posible sequel wccftech.com/nier-automata-sequel-planning-stages/
Black diamonds on chips mean they will be the lowest cost to equip. So a damage+ chip with a diamond next to it may only cost 4 opposed to a chip with a diamond costing 7-11 to equip. Reddit and game FAQ have some pretty good threads about optimizing your chips.
Thanks for cleraing that up. I figuerd out something in that line. I´m now saving all chips with black diamonds to combine them, to get a better configuration. And i try to figure opt everything by my self, no guides or wikis. But yeah, sometimes you just have to search for the answer somewhere. Thanks, and cheers ;)
I am playing right now on normal but even on that difficulty, the game does not hold your hand. The thrill of discovering the game through being taught early on in the game that adapting to the game mechanics is required, not encouraged. The joy I felt of being forced to learn and learn fast or die is what hooked me in this game. Looking forward to Hard Difficulty after my first completion.🙂👍
I mean, compare this to something like Persona 5. That game would never shut up and constantly repeated itself of stuff I already knew, both in narrative and mechanics.
I'd say the C route is the true opening since thats when we get the opening credits.
To quote an old kingdom hearts 358/2 Days flash I saw waaaaaaaay back when...
Axel: Silly Roxas! This is Square Enix; there isn't 1 tutorial...we have 500 of them!
Wow. I must suck then. All I learned was that my bullets destroy some of the enemies bullets. Didn't know about the heavy attacks vs dark bullets. Didn't know about how the dodge really worked. Didn't know about the combo moves after dodging. Never felt confident with anything really. Lol. As a reference, I've only tried on Hard and have made less than 10 attempts thus far. Only because I got tired of hearing the narration over and over though. I'd be happy to replay the tutorial when I died if I could speed up the narration. Waiting is so aggravating when I know I'm going to die in 10 minutes and have to listen to it all over again. Maybe I'm asking too much though. After everything you explained in this video though I'm sure when I give it another go I'll have a better experience. Thanks!
the biggest thing the tutorial didn't teach you is how and when to heal because you have an auto heal chip equipped. overall, the game is good, but the invisible walls are so bad in this "open world", it immediately makes HZD the clear GOTY for PS4 for me. I'm so glad I waited for it to go on sale.
......yup, your a moron
I think it was on my 4th or 5th 'tutorial' play through I noticed the screen went black/white greyish when my health was low. Initially I thought something was wrong with the game! haha. I loved how the chip system in the character build is designed in such a way you can take everything off the HUD (if you choose) and yet the environment/screen still allows you to know what is happening to your character. ie the screen dulls letting you know you are about to die. Best game I've ever played. No flaws at all.
I wouldn't mind if you went deep on any and all games, not just MMO's. Looking forward to the next one.
Good to know! I'll keep that in mind when I am doing my planning!
+ like and sub this is a good listen the standard of this content is the best i have seen for any info drop of any game. the fine points are properly conveyed. this content of yours is an inspired piece of work and I hope you continue to do it.
Really enjoyed this video. I just started playing this last night (and didn't stop playing it until this morning😊). I got through the prologue on my third try i think but i didn't mind the inconvenience of having to restart. Saying that though I would have been pissed if i'd screwed up for a third time. Having to restart certainly made me totally ready for the rest of the game and on top of that it was on my third attempt that i found all those secret shortcut routes. I'm now really looking forward to seeing what's to come.
Welcome back bud!
We missed you!
Thanks :D Glad to be back!
Believe it or not, I JUST picked up this game, and respect my gaming skills MORE after playing the tutorial like I did when I first learned to die less in Demon's Souls!
Hollow Knight it's the best game of the year for me.
I think the evasion window is so large to deal with changing perspectives. Enemies in sidescroll are harder to see telegraph (especially when they pile up) and attacks are on a different scale when in the mechs so rather than come up with three systems they just had one with a generous window that would cover all the different perspectives. At least that's my thought. Great video.
NO! You're breathtaking! ;)
I missed the tip about the flight mech melee attack during the first play through and was actually sort of disappointed when I figured out you could you could slash the purple bullets. This totally negated many of the tense situations or hard movement I encountered during the first play through. I kind of wish there were more orbs you couldn't destroy, forcing you to move and look ahead at what space you could occupy and what wouldn't be safe in the coming seconds. However I understand that this would lead to cheap feeling deaths in the one hit kill modes as the developers don't really have a way of guaranteeing you won't be completely trapped or have no space to go to.
Over this game is just a little too easy on normal and selecting hard is a big jump in difficulty. I also never used the lock on for the pod because it was completely possible and more fun to play without it.
great video bud. if something might have sold me the game, its this
I thought I was a God after 16 hours. After watching this video I realized I wasn't even close.
2:12 I believe that actually gets explained by a sidequest, the reason one of the units accompanying you at the start gets shot down.
Dude you are frikking hilarious! Great video! Im subscribing!
Well made video sir. Current standings are 123 likes to 0 dislikes.
Really great video. You said everything I was thinking, and more.
Can't wait to get my new PC so I can finally experience this game.
Gaia Tuvan The p.c. version has a lot of bugs. People aren't happy.
awesome video!, I also notice a lot of this, it reminds me of the first Mario bros level
I just got it and I quickly switched to normal after trying the intro on hard lol, never played a game like this, I'm enjoying it so far and just started
I'm halfway through my second play through now :) Loving all of this
1:45 wait, 7**E**? Fuck I did not notice that.
really insightful video! btw, when you talk about the heavy attack in the game and its design option, you're actually using the light attack. hehe. nbd tho
Damn now I've got to replay the game for the fourth time
I was honestly pretty miserable when I first picked this game up. I spent 10+ hours trying to beat this tutorial on normal. I struggled with the first Marx enemy and had to use up all my healing items surviving it the first time, eventually learning a trick where I could stand in a corner and shoot at the enemy for a long time while recharging the laser. I did fine with all the smaller enemies... then in the area with two Marx enemies, I kept dying over and over again for hours because I couldn't pull off a perfect dodge. Everyone was telling me to set the game difficult to Easy for the tutorial then put it back up, but I thought that was ridiculous so I kept at it until I did it. For the longest time I thought the trick was to avoid getting hit and using any healing items early in the tutorial so you could soak up damage and avoid dying when the two Marx enemies at the end hit you, and I think I got past them once by somehow avoiding damage so that I had a ridiculous number of healing items, but then was so weak Engels finished me off. So I feel like I got the most frustrating experience from this... continually dying right near the end of the tutorial to those two enemies, being sent back to the beginning, and having to play though everything again and again with no real idea what they wanted from me. I definitely like the idea behind the tutorial and feel like an autosave would have ruined it... but I think it wouldn't have been so terrible to have a single save point right before the two Marx enemies. Because if you haven't mastered the perfect dodge by that point and somehow got that far without it, repeating the whole tutorial won't help much and you'll be in for a bad time. It was just so awkward because I mastered the normal dodge that they taught in the fighter section and thought the only purpose was to move in one direction suddenly, I had no idea about the special case of a perfect evade. I feel like the biggest flaw in the tutorial is that the dodge mechanic probably should have been taught in a ground battle, rather than in the flight section where it isn't very useful and isn't fully fleshed out. Another thing that sucked is that I was playing on PC where the dodging is harder to pull off, and I wound up going over the number of hours after which I could have returned the game to get the PS4 version... during the tutorial. So by the time I realized the PC version was a buggy mess that was never going to be patched, I had already put in enough hours I couldn't get my money back. I eventually wound up beating the game, but there were a lot of things about my first experience with the game that left me kind of disappointed.
There is a player made software that allows you to have an auto fire button, disables double tap to evade and dedicated button for dodging so you can basically spam shift in any direction and you'll always dodge whatever is near you. It also has different modes for the camera. It's a must have for PC. You can find it in Nexus mods. I think it was named Input Overhaul or something. Theres also FAR mod that fixes everything wrong with the game graphically but thats another thing.
I had no idea right trigger did an evade until i got an evade chip and googled it i was like 50 hours in i simple jumped behind my enemys in a constamd 2-3 strike jump behind damce. I killed marx by shooting him and using heal items
Great video.
I hate to say this because I think the game is beautiful in every conceivable aspect and I agree with every point you made, but I don't think the difficulty levels were well implemented. Normal should really be called easy and hard is barely any easier than very hard.
There's nothing to bridge the gap between normal and hard. It's due to the one-shot potential of all bosses and I think that's entering very hard territory. I feel they went that route because otherwise you could carry 99 healing items on you at all times and the game wouldn't be any harder.
I wish instead, hard mode increased the damage you took about three times without one-shotting you (even if it leaves you at 1hp) and limiting the amount of healing items you could carry, say to 10 small, 5 medium and 1 large healing items. It would stop hard from being about performing perfectly and more about performing very well while managing very few items. In particular, Adam is where I dropped hard mode, the guy kept teleporting away and killing me with a cube from outside my fov. Fuck that guy.
I don't want this to come off as wanting it to be easier, more about it being a different challenge from very hard.
konigstigerr i agree i was pist that the o ly diffrence from normal and hard is u cant lock on in hard yet very hard is one shot, there needs to be one more step inbween the two last difficultys we can call it soulslike difficulty
Love the Channel Hatter !
It's not a giant buzzsaw, it's actually a bucket wheel excavator arm.
Also many players won’t find the retro nostalgia in this game. For people like me who started playng the first shooting 2D games of the Nintendo this is really a masterpiece. This game is a mix of all what is old and new in one game. Besides it is futuristic but not in a Star Wars kind of way (wich everybody tries to mimic) it has this Aliens movie nostalgia that even in the future there are things that will look outdated ( like the robots and the pixelated computer screens) wich are a nice touch of art.
Soory but I can keep going on and on.
So it is a good game 😁
Just started playing and I reached my first Game over....welp there we go again.
But I really love the visuals and fighting is fun ( even though I'm not used to it since I got my console in May and it's also my first time playing games other than PC )
great analysis! sort of similar to how dark souls teaches you. you are definitely not overthinking anything. this is all intentional and is just one part of the brilliance of this masterpiece
The game that forced me to play differently on my controller then I have ever played in my life. So strange, but I love it :)
This game is art. Every detail is beautiful and intentional. The depth of the combat system is way more intricate than it seems. The philosophy of the game is beautiful. The art is beautiful. The story is beautiful. The real ending is beautiful. The option to help others ; ) Beautiful. Ahhh. Wish i could play it blind again
23:30 I assume you started the game on hard or higher difficulty then, because even with how much I screwed up perfect evading durring the marks and engles fights, I still got through on my first try, but that was only normal difficulty. Honestly, I may need to play through on the hardest difficulty some time, just to see how insane the first Emile fight can be ^_^
SIMPLY PUT : MASTERPIECE!!!!
I completed the game and never realized you can destroy dark bullets
how do u do that thing where the enemy is stunned and u press circle to do some crazy blender shit
Sure am glad I beat the prologue without dying (on Normal). :P
Hard difficulty is meant 2B, well....HARD. Very well done explanation of how the tutorial prepares you to have the knowledge needed to progress through the rest of the game. After I have completed the game on hard, I have to say that it was one hell of a ride. 100hrs in.😁😁
2 videos in one week wtf? i guess you really are back
This game is the best in the eighth console generation that I've played yet!
I remember I completed normal mode 100% with all weapons and upgrades, side quests and secret bosses. I started hard mode and it took me 3 tries to beat the tutorial...
I remember spending 5 hours on tutorial only to lower the difficulty to normal where I stayed until the end. I'm a dirty casual, but I don't find 1-shots fun, especially after 30 minutes of tutorial.... for the 20th time.
I'm gonna replay it though, this time on hard difficulty.
The tutorial is amazing but personally I think it could do with a save point at the half way point
-same with the beginning of route B :)
If anyone can fuck it up, it's DarkSydePhil......
Maaan, I wish you could make more videos , really miss you :(
Lol excellent video. Kudos
Who got their data deleted?
get this on soundcloud orange
That's a good call!
Certain reviewers said that the first hour of the game was slow and boring. Incomprehensible...
wow, so youre not dead. Good!
I died fighting Engels 😢 that sure did make me take the tutorial seriously lol
YEs YES !!! A video
Thank you for your work 👍💗💗 I love your video 👍
Miss your videos
LOL her first day lol
Im at ending c about 120 hours in at 99level and im pist there isnt more and a 200 level cap
Also i literally never have cried from a videogame until now n i have played every top game of the month for the past years
Have you played breath of the wild or super mario odyssey?
Darksouls got me ready for the hard mode hehe
Doesn't it kind of imply that some of the androids are essentially displaying a death wish?
A big theme of the whole game!
So the team leader in the initial assault (and others) looked like they let themselves get deep sixed?
Maybe it's just me overthinking it though?
Apart from that you are completely correct about the training tutorial I think!
Although I never play on HARD level myself, in order to save on my dental work. Because I grind my teeth like a Hyena when things get tough...lol
Morale in YoRHa did seem pretty low, desertion was rife but I don't think many were actually suicidal. The fighter commander who let herself get shot down didn't actually intend to die.
There is no game with difficulty setting... Naturally you want to play on the hardest difficulty, because otherwise it wouldn't be challenging enough. If a game can get harder, it isn't hard enough yet.
