Shareef Abdur-Rahim: How Good was The MOST UNDERRATED Player in the 1996 NBA Draft? | FPP

  • He was a member of the Legendary 1996 NBA Draft, yet even though he was a top 3 pick, who had a lot of individual success in the league, you never seem to hear about him. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had a historic freshman season for the Cal Golden Bears, and then decided to enter the NBA draft after just one NCAA season. He would become the highest freshman draft pick at the time as he was a high risk high reward prospect who the second year Vancouver Grizzlies took a chance on. He was supposed to team with Bryant “Big Country” Reeves for the next decade, but Reeves began declining quickly. So this forced Abdur-Rahim to step up; and he did for the next 5 years with the Grizzlies, as one of the league’s most underrated offensive talents. Aside from Mike Bibby, Abdur-Rahim didn’t have much help, until he was finally traded away after 5 seasons. But he would be in another losing situation with an Atlanta Hawks which featured him, Jason Terry and Glenn Robinson. Once he was traded from Atlanta, his career was never the same as his role decreased in less than ideal situations, and then his knees stopped holding up and he was out of the league after 11 seasons. He never had any real chance to win, but he never complained about it, he was available night in and night out, as one of the precursors of the power forwards you see in today’s NBA. He spent the best years of his career on a historically bad team in a small market, and today doesn’t get nearly the recognition that he deserves, as Shareef Abdur-Rahim was one of the league’s best offensive players for the better part of a decade.

Ehh in ways underrated but I think mainly cause he was in the 96 draft... had even more potential then what he ended with even tho he was good asf but if he was drafted a few years later in one of the awful 99-02 drafts then he'd be talked about more

I believe that him playing for losing teams and not getting that promotional push from the league makes him such a forgotten player because he gave crazy work to the best players in his era, very underrated. Playing in small markets was a major factor also salute to him

I always respected Reef’s game. It’s not easy to be productive hard night after night on a bad team knowing that you’re the primary option. And he’s doing well post career as the president of the NBA G-League.

I forget that Shareef was part of the 2000 Sydney Team USA squad. For as many bad teams as he was on, basically his entire career, at least he’s immortalized as an Olympic gold medalist.

I feel people never understand how dominate Shareef Abdur-Rahim was in his prime with the formerly known Vancouver Grizzlies. This guy can average 30 points per game and can really play the game for the love of it. He was drafted in the same class with Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Ray Allen, Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, Stephon Marbury, Jermaine O'Neal, Peja Stojaković, Antoine Walker. He was the player who played the most games without a postseason appearance. We wonder what had happened to him over the years.

I'm a Sacramento Kings fan always was my childhood team. But when we moved to the PNW in 1997 from Northern California we'd end up watching alot of Sonics,Blazers and Grizzlies games and Shareef was one of my favorite players to follow. Also I miss the Sonics and Grizzlies in the North West. Grizzlies uniforms and team colors were some of my favorite as a kid.

I found this channel recently by looking for a video about Bernard King’s legendary Xmas day game and I have to say the content is amazing I am impressed you can find so much good quality video from the 80’s and 90’s when sports/bqsketball was not as widely broadcast as it is today. The players you use as subjects for your videos bring back so many early memories of being an NBA fan keep up the great work. Best channel i have found on RUclips in a long time. 👏 I’m also from Vancouver so the fact that you just posted a video on Abdur-Rahim right after I started following this channel is 🔥

He is forgotten because he unfortunately played on bad teams for his entire career. Played with the expansion Grizzlies and lowly Hawks in his prime, played with the "Jail Blazers" era Portland Trail Blazers after they stopped being a top level team, and played the last three years of his career in Sacramento after they had stopped being a contender as well.

In vancouvers short history they actually drafted pretty well. Reeves was a good starting center before injuries and weight issues, Abdur Rahim, Mike Bibby, Steve Francis who they turned into Michael Dickerson who was a 16-18 ppg starter before his own injuries & Stromile Swift who was so talented just never put it together- definitely a bad 2nd overall pick but i think a lot of teams would have been enticed by his athleticism. The only really bad pick was Antonio Daniels. Just were a poorly run franchise and nobody wanted to play/live in Canada back then.
