- Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and other officials held a press conference to provide on update on the ongoing landslide in Rolling Hills Estates, which has destroyed multiple homes and forced evacuations.
I grew up very near there. Those hills have been slipping for generations. I've seen houses slide since my childhood in the sixties. Half of that area should never have been built on. Greedy developers.
At least you are honest
There must be a demand. 🤔
You are correct. Common sense says to stay away.
Curt Miller6484 Where, other than Portuguese Bend? Our family home was on a canyon...all horse properties in RHE had to be on a horse trail in those days. The house was on bedrock, though. The city is mostly concerned about fire danger...that they're strict about. *This is on top of the hill, north of Crest and nowhere near PV Drive South.

So now there are 42,000 plus 12 or more homeless. families. What does it matter if these were wealthy homes or humble homes? People lost their homes where they lived with their families. I hope nothing like this ever happens to you and your family. Prayers for this community and the people displaced.
When I was a child in the 1970s, during heavy rains, we had, I remember at Christmas time waiting for my grandfather to come home before we opened our presents. Houses were sliding off the mountain in Pacific Palisades and he was making the decisions on which houses to try to save.
Erosion doesn’t stop because you build a house on top. Erosion is a constant process. If you live on a hillside, eventually, that hill is going to come down.
Same with a river bank or shoreline, or mountains behind you, the view can be costly

Why is paying taxes for a home that is no longer there even on the table??? That state is nuts!
No just them
This just happened......Why the statement about people paying property taxes. In the State of Ca. you pay your property tax in April and December. I am sure there will be some assistance in helping them in the future. Actually property taxes is the least of their worries right now. They better hope the insurance company pays them.

The person/people that gave the building permit should be held responsible!! I'm located in the mountains/foothills outside of Yosemite and everything has to be inspected before and during construction. Even our soil is tested for water drainage before property can be sold for building sites!

Un, if your house burns down or is otherwise destroyed, the LA County Assessor reassess your property. That's all she's offering and it's a pittance compared to their financial losses. The California Franchise Board and the IRS will allow them to deduct massive losses like these over a period of years. Same rules for everyone. The taxpayers aren't making these people whole, and if they have mortgages, they're still on the hook for the balance...unless they go bankrupt, which means they lose hundreds of thousands in equity. Let me guess... you're not a homeowner.
Rich private properties? I'm guessing the houses are worth 0.
Hay how about this don't build you're house on the side of the mountain.
That is too much for some people to grasp.
The name "ROLLING HILLS" is very accurate.

They didn’t call it “Rolling Hills” for nothing.
I guess if the state approved them to build there, it should be the state’s problem to fix it, they collected all the taxes for that area
The State had nothing to do with issuing a permit to build. That would have been the City of Rolling Hills and L.A. County.

"Rolling Hills" is an apt name.I wonder how many of these homes are rentals and isn`t that what insurance is for?Imagine if earthquakes would happen here? Any one building in a hilly area should check what kind of ground they are planning to use.
I doubt these homes are rentals. Rolling Hills is extremely expensive real estate.

No to federal funding. Build a house on a hill and this is what you get. The rest of the states shouldn't contribute financially to CA's poor planning. Sue the city/county and the HOA.
Why do we have to pay for a home owner associations screw ups?
Landslide is not covered in a standard homeowner policy. They needed a coverage called "Difference in Conditions" which covers landslide.
Why would the local tax department still require them to pay taxes?
Like a scene from Poltergeist.
🤣😂 They should have gotten a clue. The place was called "Rolling Hills" 🤣😂
What can i say, those people choose to live on the edge.
With the huge rains the past year, it's not surprising at all. Expected this on all hillside homes. RPV residents are wealthy enough with insurance to pay out..
the difference between Palos Verdes homeowners and 27th Street homeowners who lost their houses from a Fireworks Explosion !!! interesting.
As long as they don't have second homes!!! Very wealthy part if LA. It does suck, no doubt. Property tax break cool, but if they own second home anywhere!!
