    Your Hammarlund makes me miss my Collins R-388 (51j3). Used to spend HOURS tuning the bands until the wee hours of the morning. My best catch was Radio Nigeria about 2000 when they were testing their transmitter, they repeated "this is Radio Nigeria" with a short musical interlude of about 5 seconds and then repeat. This was when I lived near Chicago.

      Voice of Nigeria was lost to time just within the past three years. I used to listen to it when I could find it. No longer heard, just like other stations.

      @JrGoonior I can see how I will also spend hours with my Hammarlund! The real old-style analogue tuning where there is no soft muting at all, makes it fun to chase signals. Quite different to the DSP-based radios that we mostly use now.

      Hi Robert, welcome to my channel! I can recommend the Qodosen DX-286 as a travel radio without any hesitation. It is a terrific radio and the small size makes it perfect for travel. Like you, I also travel with carry-on luggage only, but I usually take a laptop bag along as well when it is a work trip. Then I have a bit more space. But if you travel with one bag only and want to take an excellent, very small radio along, the Qodosen is the one to take. It does not have SSB though, so just keep that in mind. If you like SSB listening also I would recommend the Tecsun PL-368. Overall not as good as the Qodosen, but it is a nice radio and does have SSB.

    Hey André, I agree 100% with you, big old iron wins hands down here. I'd say that it's a tie between the PL-680 and the DX-286 considering that the signal seems to fade in and out over time. RUclips's automatic subtitles system agrees with this, decoding the Brazilian talk much better during the Hammarlund segment than during the two other ones. That's a clear sign.
    But isn't big old iron cheating a bit here? being hooked to your MLA30+ with a preamp if I'm not misled, whereas the two others have to do with a long wire antenna...
    I've never heard Radio Voz Missonaria as loud and clear as what the Hammarlund gives. Impressive.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  12 дней назад +1

      Hi Alain, thanks for your comment! No cheating at all 😁 I used the MLA30+ on all three these radios, so exactly the same antenna in each case. The old tube technology on the Hammarlund just seems to be better than PLL and even the amazing TEF6686 chip... But these tube radios are big and bulky, so I understand why they were replaced with smaller radios and newer technology. This specific Hammarlund is also one of the best tube radios of its time, so I guess not all tube radios will perform equally well. I'll have to get some more tube radios to compare!

      @@swlistening Compared to PLL analogue and DSP technologies, vacuum tube receivers are less susceptible to RF input overloading, have a higher dynamic range and provide a more linear response to distortion effects from front end overloading. 🙂
      There's a reason why vacuum tubes are traditionally preferred by serious musicians (especially guitarists) - they have a warmer sound and distorts nicely instead of harshly clipping, in a transistor based guitar amplifier. Amp manufacturers have since offered a good compromise - hybrid amps that integrate both technologies. The pre-amp that shapes the guitar sound is powered by a valve tube, while the power amp section is made up from more dependable, solid state MOSFET components.
      Not wanting to be outdone, guitar effects manufacturers had also come up with floor or rack mounted effects that have a small valve amplifier tube to get that classic overdriven tube sound. 😀
      Still, I don't think Tecsun, Qodosen or XHDATA will revert to vacuum tube shortwave radios. Ever since the radio manufacturing industry had embraced the solid state transistor technology, they never went back to valve technology - not even for nostalgic reasons. The last valve powered consumer radio to be made was the Philco R-701 and it was a bedside clock radio.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  10 дней назад

      @@StratmanII It is understandable, I suppose, that vacuum tube technology has died out in favour of more modern and, I guess, cheaper technology. But a real pity, given all the advantages that you mention here. I can certainly experience the real quality and warm sound and almost distortion-free reception found on tube radios on my Hammarlund now. A real pleasure and eye-opening in many ways.

    Qodosen SR-286 speaker is too small to compete with larger radios, it's not bad, just too small compared to larger units. Tubes usually have a warmer, 'mellow' sound that's much more pleasant.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  7 дней назад

      Hi Henry, that is true, the Qodosen speaker is small when compared to some other radios, but it is quite good. This test was through the headphone jacks though, not the speakers. I recorded the sound via an audio cable into the Tecsun ICR-110, so the sound you hear is what one would hear through headphones, not the speakers.

      Hi Paul, I haven't really noticed a significant difference, I think they are very much equal. Both are very good for recording. I think the PL-680 is a really good performer, I am very happy that I finally got one. Glad you found one also. They seem to be getting harder to get now. The memory system is actually quite easy, you will see once you get yours. You just need to get the hang of the page system. It is kind of similar to the memory system on the XHDATA D-808. André, I'm too tired today to draw any conclusions from this video, but there's something else I have... I haven't noticed it in your videos with Qodosen radios, but my TEF6686 receiver tends to kinda cut audio bandwidth on weaker signals, so it never sounds like 8kHz wide unless the signal is strong with little noise. Heck, I've yet to hear a real 8kHz wide AM audio on this radio! 😂 Unfortunately it doesn't help that virtually all Chinese SW transmitters and even many high-power MW ones had been trimmed to around 5.5 kHz over the course of this year 😢

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 10 дней назад +1

      Interesting observation, Arnie. I noted that the DX-286 offers a 8 kHz wide bandwidth on MW and SW, but I seldom set the filter that wide. I'm used to listening to SW stations at narrower bandwidths. Hi Arnie, I have a feeling that the Qodosen bandwidth settings are not the same as on most of my other radios. 3 kHz on the Qodosen sounds more like 6 kHz on my other radios, so perhaps 8 kHz on my Qodosen is actually only 4 kHz? Might be the same on your TEF6686 radio?

    • @ArnieDXer
      @ArnieDXer 10 дней назад +2

      @@swlistening again, the question is whether designers of our radios meant audio bandwidth or IF bandwidth, the latter always being 2x the audio bandwidth ('cause of two sidebands). With XHDATA we know it's about the audio bandwidth. With TEF6686-based radios, I really don't know 😆 3 kHz does seem to sound like 3 kHz, but 8 kHz, on mine, never sounds like 8k, but then again, I no longer have any signal to test it on. And again, whenever the signal fades down, that audio bandwidth seems to shrink, maybe to 4 kHz 🤔 Will need to record some samples one day & analyze with Audacity.
