  • A revolutionary car for Rolls Royce, the Silver Shadow lasted 15 years in production, before living on yet further in the Silver Spirit. Here’s why 55 years on, it still deserves its title of ‘Best Car In The World’...

My brother-in-law had Silver Shadow II that was a company car. He said there were no mechanical problems with the car whatsoever. But there were hard fast rules as to where to park it, as far away from other cars as possible, and in a well lit space. In the evening, when at a restaurant or hotel, the valets wanted it parked in front where it could be seen, also adding a level glamour to the establishment.

One of the most beautiful shadows I have seen.
I had thought about getting one for myself one day.
But I was concerned about reliability cost of maintenance
and also the ability or enough faith to find a mechanic
that knows what he is doing, and that you can trust.
I have heard a lot of good and bad things about having
a Rolls Royce, this was some time ago. I hope the bad
    things have been worked out.

A lovely old car, they make you feel special. The Shadow is such a pretty car, much more so than the Spirit.
Whilst I prefer the look of the earlier chrome bumper car, the Shadow 11 drives appreciably better and has a more modern feel.

She was a true Rolls Royce, still with Merlin Engine. Sadly, today's Rolls Royce cars are soaped up BMW, a very fine car in its own right. You have a very fine car. Keep it up.

As a fan of British cars - in the ‘60s of my childhood my Canadian family owned Jaguars, Rovers, Austins and one amazing Humber - I am very pleased to know the legacy of recent-era Rolls-Royce cars is being carried forward by independent parts suppliers. I admit to being a motorhead and love cars from every part of the world. But to me, probably because of childhood memories, the hand-craftsmanship of British luxury sedans has set a standard of excellence that to my mind has never been equaled by anyone else.

I once eyed a 1976 Silver Shadow (ex-wedding car) that was on sale at £9,000 near where I lived (in fact, the guy who owned it only lived a few streets away), but I chose not to take it on as one of the main reasons was that these cars are so beautiful but at the same time so fragile.
Every inch of these machines is hand-crafted perfection, the product of a panel-beater in Crewe spending hours with a hammer on each sculpted part, and the idea of something denting or blemishing such a thing of beauty was the stuff of nightmares for me, so much so I'd probably be too afraid to drive it! xD

Then my brother had one and I had a couple of hours driving it. They're like nothing else...it's about the ride, not where you're going.

What a great vehicle. It definitely requires a lot more attention than a Camry would require but it's just so classy and elegant. This car is wonderfully restored, and all the wood and smooth leather make it feel so special. It's a testament to handbuilt built in Britain quality. I bought a fabulous Made in England Umbrella that cost me a small fortune, but it's an occasion when I use it, and I actually look forward for when it rains because I get to use it. I bet the same feeling arises if you have a Silver Shadow as a daily driver. You look forward to driving it and it becomes more than an A to B car

Just need to research small specialist engineering enthusiasts and parts suppliers who know them etc. Mind you engine of course had Rolls Royce on it!! I almost bought a Silver Shadow several years ago. It wasn't perfect, but the price was right and it did run good. A new paint job would have done wonders for it. But someone who knew about British cars talked me out of it, telling me I would have nothing but problems. Having owned several vintage British motorcycles, I was used to the problems, but they weren't as bad as most people who have never owned one seem to think, and parts were available. My understanding is that parts were no longer available for these. Oh well, too late now. I just bought what will likely be my last car, a like new 2007 Lincoln Town Car with 34,000 miles on it.

      @@byteme9718 yes it does.
I had the car from new in 1978.
It was delivered back from service at Hythe Road. The rear was sagging because the height corrector was not functioning correctly. RR modified the Citroen suspension which was used under licence with an anti sink device.
By the way. My car suffered "A Failure to Proceed" near Stonehenge the first time I took it outside London.. The main electrical harness plug had come out. I have a photo of the RR Sunday emergency mechanic with multigrips crimping it up.
Also had a Citroen CX Prestige.

If you close the locked boot with the key in the boot gutter channel (don't ask) if you remove the spare wheel, pop out the panel that allows your chauffeur to top up the spares air pressure from the boot, and spend 2 hours flat on your back with your arm in the boot working blind (literally)
You can remove the boot catch and open the locked boot. 😲👍
As discovered by myself as an 18 year old ,doing the above to my parents 1967 shadow (apparently a rare one with factory air and a sliding metal sunroof) in 1983 on a family holiday to a farm in Surrey.

For the proper car enthusiast today such as myself there is quite a dilema . People have become classic car admirers for different reasons and myself was the fact that cars today being digitaly controlled which means you cant fix them and in my case a beautiful 7 series BMW E38 had to be scrapped for the huge amount of electronic gremlins controlling everything . My choice of car led me to either a Rover Vitesse SD1 or a Humber Imperial. or a Rolls Royce Shadow , or the one that I went for , a Japanese low mileage Daimler Sovereign Series 3 V12 . ( I bought the Humber as well ! ) Nothing digital, only DIY freindly analogue and I simply cant imagine anything better than my Daimler V12 its utterly silent , more power than my old 7 series BMW could hope to deliver and people actualy think I have "arrived " . Cars give way for me at junctions simply because I am in a Daimler .

How about the evolution into Silver Spirit/Spur?
I've got one, the maintenance is minimal, mainly spanners & screwdrivers work which my excellent local garage does easily because it doesn't need any modern electronics or special tools to do (I even do minor odd and sods myself).
Parts are easily available online from a supplier that has loads of parts for the older Royce & Bentley models (new, aftermarket or from cars they dismantle themselves) and best of all it's an absolute joy to waft down the road in it.
I expect to eat into the reserve I set aside when I bought it because at 40 years old it needs a bit of money spending on it, mainly cosmetic.
It's also, inflation adjusted, the cheapest car I've ever insured. To be fair that's a combination of my age and its but with a 6.75litre V8 it's still cheaper to insure than my 1.8litre daily use car.
A special car hand built in Crewe costing 1/3rd the price of a basic ordinary car or 1/5th the price of a very ordinary BEV, what's not to like?

Provided you don't mind single digit fuel economy (mpg), a SS II is a nice ride. Most people I see online give their fuel economy (USG) as 7-8 mpg in town and maybe 11-13 on a sustained speed highway trip. Compare this with a 2008 Lincoln Town Car that averages around 18 mpg in town and achieves maybe 23-24 on a highway trip. The Rolls is indisputably a fine car and the Lincoln is not, but the latter will get you 300-400K miles with remarkably little cost for maintenance. The same cannot be said for a SSI or SSII. What price heritage? Worth the price, but if you're just trying to impress people, you're just burning money for effect. Your money. Your choice.

It is kind of funny how most people (in particular the Brits) say that Rolls Royce claimed to be "the best car in the World". They never did (at least after WWII) - instead they called their wheeled products "The FINEST cars in the World" - and that statement has a truth even today :)

A bit pedantic I know but the first Silver Shadow was known simply as the Silver Shadow. Rather than the Silver Shadow 1. Of course the revised 1977 itineration was the Silver Shadow II.

Yes, but you should understand it's retroactively called the Shadow I even if it wasn't named as such. Because it's easier that way. Like the Mk I Jaguar was never named as such, it was always only named the 2.4-litre or the 3.4 litre, but was mostly known as the Mk I only after the launch of the both named and called Mk II in 1959. It's not a question of being pedantic, but what is convenient in daily use.
