I love using Dharma Trading fiber reactive dyes (for cellulose fibers and silk) and soda ash ( pretty inexpensive) which helps the fiber grab the color. The color selection is amazing and economical. I custom dyed cotton fringe for a rug for my husband’s client. This is fun watching someone else’s work process. Also, great idea for the puppy pads!
Loved your fabric dyeing video. Very easy to follow. You have inspired me to begin doing my own fabric! I had ordered two fabrics for a Halloween project. Neither fabric look like what l yhought l ordered. The project is big and l hope yo only do it once. Now l will just dye it myself!! Thank you!

You're welcome Sharon. Don't worry about messing up as there is no such thing. Just go with it and remember go light. You can go darker, but you cannot go lighter!

Wow, you made this process go so smooth and the colors turned out just beautiful. I had no idea this was something that could be done on my own, so I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Is there anyway this color will bleed if I was to wash it once project is stitched?
I cannot say for sure one way or the other. I do not wash my stitching after it is completed until absolutely have to. I have heard that you can rinse your fabric in vinegar to set the color, but I have not tried it. I usually iron my fabric when it is slightly damp to dry it and hope that it sets the color. I have not had a problem with it bleeding. I would suggest testing it out on a corner of fabric that you dyed with some white stitches and rinsing to see what happens.
Great lesson how about baking in oven crunched up to dry I did the coffee tea dye that way and it did mottle and dried dark oh your denim blue is beautiful!😉

Your tutorial was wonderful; this was really helpful! Love, love, love the mottled look your fabrics showed; especially the blue one!!! How long do you need to keep rinsing the fabric after you have achieved the color you want and do you need to use another Rit product to make sure the color stays? I saw on the Rit website that it was recommended to use that other product but didn’t know if it really was needed. Thanks again for the helpful video!
Gail, I rinse my fabric in hot then cold and until the water runs clear. I do not use anything to set the color. I have heard others use vinegar. I do hang it to dry and when it is still slightly damp I will steam iron it dry to set me color and I have not had an issue. I do not wash my stitching after I complete a project. I hope that helps!
Love the first blue. The mottling is gorgeous. I've only done tea/coffee dying. Beyond that I'm a little nervous to use RIT. I'm such a klutz!! I just KNOW I'd muck up something. By the way, was that a two step or a shuffle?? LOLOL Hugs for a very cold Canada!!
It was a 2 step and a shuffle..lol! You can do this! do all the mixing in your sink. that way if something spills there is nothing to worry about. if I am only doing 1 color I always put my bowl in the sink and do it.

Yvonne, I use hot water to dye. Not boiling, just hot and I rinse in hot if I am sticking it back into the dye. When I am done dyeing I rinse in hot first then cold. I also will Iron the fabric while it is slightly damp to dry and set the color. Enjoy dyeing your new masterpiece and beware, it is addicting!!

Hi Becca, I do not use salt. I heat set the dye by ironing it dry when it it is still a little damp. I have not had any issues with my fabric running, but I also do not wash my pieces after I stitch them. I have never tried spritzing either. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
@@CrossMyStitches good to know that salt isn't a requirement. I doubt I would ever wash my pieces after stitching, unless there was a catastrophy! I will try out the spritzing, and let you know. I have not. For me, this works perfectly most times. It is mostly trial and error and learning what works for you. If you go to the Rit Dye website they will give you color recipes to mix different colors. Just be sure to adjust the measurements when you are mixing less than what they are measuring.
I thought Rit dye contained acid dyes and direct dyes which are intended only for use on textiles. They are not considered to be safe for ingestion in any way. Are you only using these containers for dying only? I thought never interchange use these dyes in any container or cooking pot which will later be used for food preparation. Or have I believe this and it is actually food safe.

When you are done with dyeing the blue fabric let’s say, do you dispose of the dye or do you save it
I do not save the dye. Those bottles hold so much dye that I have plenty to last a long time.
I had to refrain myself from yelling “GLOVES, GLOVES, GLOVES!”

Salt is usually added to make the dye take up more level, so not an issue for these projects 😀.

According to Rit's website their dyes are non-toxic. It is also safe for sewer or septic systems.
