Thanks. The scales are similar to the Russell Green River Hunter that is kind of the American Puukko in 1095. The same knife has been made the same way by the same company since 1834. They have bulky walnut scales roughly finished like the Za-Pas. I reworked the scales on my belt sander and greatly improved them. They don’t come with a sheath so I made a beautiful welted sheath for it. You are the real deal outdoor person. Your knife content is also the real deal. 🎸🔪
Thank you very much mate. I have a Green river, they just sell the blades here. But I saw them, saw the price for a 1095 full tang blade blank. Well for that price I was having one 🤣. I put a couple of birch burl scales on it and stuck it in a sheath that I had knocking around. Now it's by far my best food prep knife. Super slicey and very easy to sharpen. Knives like that look rugged, but are heavy because there's too much steel on the handle. Tangs on traditional Puukko-knives do not look so rugged because they are very thin at the end, but that is actually really practical and sturdy shape: it makes the knife light, and there's barely any forces affecting the knife at the very end of the handle where the tang is thin.
It also gives a much better balance without having to have a super short handle like this knife. The thing is everyone says that a knife has to be full exposed tang. I have never broke a rat tail tang that was more than half the length of the handle. I will give some of my opinions on this in my next video if you are interested. Better late than never. The paws recovered pretty quickly. We have had this problem before. She just doesn't understand the difference between going for a walk and working. Pulls like a lunatic and it's not good on rocky trails. Also quite dangerous sometimes. She will start to calm down soon. 9 years old now, still probably the strongest female out of our 220 dogs. Also one of the gentlest with other dogs and the least problematic. Speaking of gentle dogs. Akso (who used to sometimes run in lead with Unni), recently retired and got adopted by a local family. Akso is a huge, heftily built dog, and one of the gentlest dogs I have ever met. They sent us a video of him meeting their other dog for the first time. It's a chiwawa 🤣, poor boy was very confused. Apparently it's going well though.
Let me know about the grind please. It does seem to be quite variable. I remember Gruggs from legion Tacticool making feathers with a factory edge. Wasn't nobody making feathers like that with the one that I got. Took quite a bit of work to put it right too. Other than that it's great for that price. Recently got a couple of BPS knives too (you might have seen). They are every bit as good value for money as everyone is saying.

Cheap and robust with really good steel. Shame it came with such a bad edge. I fixed it, but a younger less experienced version of me wouldn't have been able to do that.I have heard differing accounts of how the edge comes from new. So I guess some of us get unlucky. Looks like a good all around knife for a work box that you don't have to worry about, like fit and finish. As far as poor sharpness and quality, well I have a few of them that I'm disappointed in as well.
I have recently seen something new by BPS very similar and a lot cheaper. This is a good knife when reprofiled a little. But when you can buy a Mora for half the price, why bother. Thanks for watching Dan.

How much difference is there between this and the BPS Aura? Are you gonna do a video on the Aura? I got mine last week haven't really used it much. I believe if the weather is nice im gonna go tomorrow into the woods and setup. You know try out some equipment make sure everything is GtoG as we used to say in the army. I really like these new takes on puukko design. As a kid the puukko was what all the real woodsman had. Lol I can't imagine a better job then taking care of Dogs. That is truly a blessing.
I will do a video about the Aura, and it's a far nicer knife than the Za pas, it is a fair bit more expensive, so that is to be expected. I haven't used mine a whole lot either yet. @@KuukkeliBushcraft I got my Aura for $60 to the door. I've had the adventurer for years it was $39 when I bought it. In my opinion one of the best for the price I've found. I find a cheap knife is much more valuable than a expensive knife your scared to use. Plus you don't mind making it useful. Plus the Adventurer was on of the sharpest knives I've ever bought.
@@NorthStarKnifeReviews I agree on this point and in my book stick vs full tang offer significant differences in handling. I don't do much batoning with a puukko or throw it at trees etc, so the difference in robustness is not as much of a consideration. The ricasso and choil on this Za-Pas is also one of the "modern" parts, I suppose ;D
All Puukko’s are knives. Not all knives are Puukko’s. This is a knife, not a great one. Buy a cheap Puukko blade from Finland make a handle and you will have a much better knife. As a child I made better looking knives than this one.

Great that you're getting on with the knife now that you've sharpened it again. I'm still annoyed that I damaged mine with the power sharpening stone. But the original grind was really useless. Even though it's cheap, it doesn't really sell with the original grind. Not everyone can work a Knife so that it fits. If the dogs only knew😂. About a third of our dogs come from Norway. The Norwegian dogs are all from racing kennels, where they are very serious about only breeding the best sled dogs. The Norwegian dogs are stronger, faster and have a better work ethic in general. Unni is our strongest female probably even now at 9 years old (out of 202 dogs). I can't imagine the Finnish dogs would like those kind of immigrants if they knew 😂. I hear not all of these knives come so bad. Maybe we just got unlucky. Then again I think I made the same excuse for the Rokka knives didn't I 😂. I had absolutely no need to baton anything for that twig stove. In an Americanized kind of way. One not available anymore for ready purchase. I have a small Bark River Hatchet, small enough to be generally worthless as a hatchet. Never found a use for it, it also has a less than worthless sheath. I do like to take it out and look at it though. It might be a collector item worth more than when it was new. I won it as a door prize at a Becoming an Outdoors Woman in Alaska event to raise money for their classes.

Bit of trivia, "za pas" literally means "by the belt". In Polish it means spare or reserve. Also wrestling which is "zapasy".

Looks very robust. No bells or whistles to distract from its functionality.

I think a three quarter tang is strong enough anyway. The issue would be that the handle tapers towards the pommel. That would make it complicated.

Please outline your reasoning for questioning the Puukko terminology. I don't disagree, just curious as to your views.

All Puukko’s are knives. Not all knives are Puukko’s. This is a knife, not a great one. Buy a cheap Puukko blade from Finland make a handle and you will have a much better knife. As a child I made better looking knives than this one.
