Thank you for sharing your personal story with us about the challenges of living with Buerger's Disease. This campaign was developed to encourage smokers to quit, as well as to educate all Americans about the many adverse health consequences of smoking. Buerger's Disease is one of less known negative health outcomes from smoking and makes maintaining one’s quality of life more challenging. We are encouraged that you are doing well and continue to stay active.

I understand how hard it is to quit I was diagnosed in 2015 and I still chose to smoke smh even after everything they told me thankfully I have stopped smoking for over 2 years now cigarettes should be illegal

Seriously why are cigarettes still being sold? I think we should make a petition or something to outlaw it. Even then there'd be illegal manufacturers. :( soo frustrating

Thousands of people are afflicted with Buerger’s disease, and almost all of them used tobacco. The blood vessels of the hands and feet are especially affected in people who have Buerger’s disease. Although Buerger’s disease affects only about 10 adults per 100,000-mostly tobacco users aged 20 to 40-it’s a disease all tobacco users should be aware of. Take your mom to www.whyquit.com Joel Spitzer's videos are very helpful. There are also free nicotine anonymous meetings that occur several times every day via conference call. She would be more than welcome to come. Nicotine Anonymous also has a Facebook page she could join. It's also good for you, as someone who wants to help her quit, to be aware of the facts and helpful information to help her along the way. Good for you, and good luck to your mom.

Banning tobacco products would be an issue for Congress, not a federal agency. CDC works to educate the public on how to prevent disease and lead longer, healthier lives. This campaign encourages smokers to quit by raising awareness of the human suffering caused by smoking and providing access to resources to help smokers quit.

Light drinking actually has benefits, Fast food is food and should be eaten as a treat, Automobiles is a form of transportation made so you can get around easier, Guns are legal because the forefathers couldnt forsee how devastating it would be in the long run and made it a right, Rock climbing is something we have been doing since the dawn of man, and Moto GP is a sport. Non of these things compare to a substance meant for only one thing: To cause diseases to humans. Tobaccos a nightshade plant

Does anyone know if the actress with the baby in the incubator is Dakota Johnson? I was watching "How to be Single" the other day, and it looks like her, even down to the shape of her mouth. Thanks.

OK, smoking is horrible for you. That being said this man was genetically predisposed to buergers disease. It's a type of peripheral arterial disease. This guy has serious problem with his circulatory system. I'm not justifying smoking, but there are other factors at work. Also if you read his website. He continued to smoke for quite sometime while going through all of these amputations.
Buergers isn't a common disease. It's very rare. 8-10 patients per 100,000. It's also more common with people of Asian and Indian decent. Which again hints to this being a genetic anomaly.
So it wasn't just the smoking which caused this man's health problems. I'm sure it contributed greatly, but it was also his genetic combined with tobacco use.
Again, I'm not condoning smoking. I'm just bringing to light the other factors at work here. FAR more Americans die in alcohol related car crashes per year than Buergers disease.

He was still smoking that's why he was still losing all his limbs , once he quit the amputations stoped, there are polenty of stories like this.

Since secondhand smoke worsens the conditions of people already suffering from Buerger's Disease, it should be the case that secondhand smoke increases the risk of getting this disease even for those who don't smoke. Am I endangered if I am simply near someone who's smoking? And since tobacco leads to this problem, so could certain pollutants in our air. These ads do a great job of warning us, but I needed a matchstick and got a flamethrower instead.

The effect on the economy would be devastating and a black market would immediately pop up. Besides, who cares? Everyone nowadays knows the risks, and they choose to light up that first cigarette. They smoke knowing the risks. It's not impossible to quit either, by any stretch of the imagination. My grandfather, who smoked a pack of a day for several decades, quit cold turkey when his doctor told him he was in serious danger. He just put his carton down, and never smoked another cigarette.

Jesus, they never had an Intervention for smokers. They really, really should have. These people need help just as much as alcoholics and drug addicts, but there seems to be less help, other than patches and gum, which is a start.

    • @missyjowalter

Smokers are drug addicts. I should know, I smoked for 40 years and finally quit.....nicotine is a drug, is addictive, and will kill you....

Buerger's is awful, i have been affected by it with two leg bypasses and came close to losing limbs. Unlike Brandon, i was lucky. I was a scholarship collegiate crosscountry/track runner and have been fortunate enough to continue my running. Some of it is genetic but if something doesnt happen early it will eventually happen later with emphysema in your 50's or 60's or lung cancer. It maybe the worst thing you could start up other than crack or heroin....
