Tonya had such a great year in 1991. It is really too bad she didn't sustain this level of skating into the following three years. She was really great when she was on. (Even if she skated well, without the Triple Axel, she could have fared better than she did). It is hard for me not to feel sorry for her.
This was just so incredibly well done. Absolutely gorgeous from start to finish. And the fact that she knows how to play with the crowd and get a reaction is adorable. She really was under-rated.
This was her kind of music. If the judges would have just let her be herself and scored her on her Talent rather than constantly arguing about her music choices everything would have turned out different for her
I don't believe Tonya had any prior knowledge of it. Firstly, at the time of the Olympics she was ranked third in the world, Nancy was ranked fifth. If she wanted the gold, why would she go after a skater with a rank lower than hers? Tonya was performing 3As at the time, Nancy was no threat. It makes no sense. Secondly, even after all their investigating, the FBI never charged her with anything more than attempting to cover up after the fact. If even the FBI could find no evidence of anything else to charge her with, it's likely because there was nothing to find.
It's definitely up there in top performances for me. She just made everything look so easy! (It's not!) Love this slow, classy song for her and her graceful skating here.
Tonya had a beautiful outfit right down to her scrunchie and her happiness shows that she gets to skate to some reg. music , she is amazing, watch her in slow motion, you can then see exactly what she does, no one is comparable to her, she is truly the finest skater on earth.
Tonya’s artistry was seriously undervalued by the judges. Her Ina Bauer was absolutely gorgeous, her layback spin was beautifully positioned and all of her spins were SO FAST, and she understood the nuances of music better than anyone gave her credit for. She was ahead of her time and a victim of circumstance.
And seeing her go back out there and try the triple axel again was cool, even though she didn't land it. Reminds us how difficult it really is even though when she lands it she makes it look easy.
She was too tired and too much out of breath. Yes, it would have been cool if she had been able to land it, but it just was too much after this Performance. After she landed the triple Axel at the U:S Championchips 1991 somehow she was tied down to doing it (I'm not sure if this is the right phrasing.. English is not my native language). The triple Axel seemed to be the only Thing that counted (and the other Skaters didn't have to do it to be marked equally), but Tonya was really so much more than that...
Love her attitude, she is one of the best athletes that Ive seen, she conquer under her own rules and I admire that, today she stills skating just because she love it!!
when they say, "well there's more to skating than just jumps" . well, there is more to skating then just the artistic. it's a sport. and many of those quote unquote "artistic" skaters didn't have the speed across the ice or in their spins. or the height in the jumps like Tonya Harding had. that's what they should have been working on.
No one is saying it should be all artistic. But you cant deny that most of the focus is on jumps. And so what if theyre not working on speed, etc? Alyssa Lui isnt fast and she's doing more quads than anyone else in the US- at least. Its skating, not acrobatics.
@@itsallgoodman1244 of course it doesn't have to be classical. However there are exciting skaters which aren't necessarily about speed- their performances transcend just the physicality and become art. Those are the highest level of skater that I can see- you just know when you're watching them that it's art- appreciation of which is more than excitement. The performances have meaning, a story with a beginning, middle and end. What skating is about. The performance is more than the sum of its parts. For me good examples are Oksana Bauil (sp) in Lillehammer, and this amazing young man here: ruclips.net/video/scfyswBSSXk/видео.html
@@itsallgoodman1244 Everyone has their preferences, of course. As far as Tanya goes, I think she was a prisoner of her time in that of course we know the 1980s-90s were about the Ice Princess. She in my mind, could have very well been styled- not so much of trying to whittle herself down the Ice Princess, but expand into that of a Warrior Queen. I'm sorry that she didn't have the chance to grow into the stature of that role instead. I would have loooved to work on that image with her. She performed artistically - art can come in all shapes and sizes and styles. That's where I find their presence, but that is me. As far as Daniil, he's 14, most everyone has some bad habits. He's at a good place in his next step of development to start changing them.
How did they expect her to land it she was completely out of breath. I used have really bad asthma and I know how hard it is to keep up your stamina, its almost impossible. To make her skate an encore after everything she did in her first performance must have been physically and mentally tasking. And then they isolate her to try the triple axel when shes short of breath must have been super hard for her.
Remember this wasn’t part of the competition, it was about entertaining the crowds. She was never being marked by the judges on this, she wanted to perform for the crowd.
C. Marks It's so supported, so strong, and she's able to change direction fairly easily whilst remaining in that position for a long time, she was a true pro
She did this same routine in Oakland at Skate America that year. I just have to say though, the way they photographed it in Oakland was something special, with the long lens, compared to this
The judges give Tonya Harding a low ball score to keep the other skaters in the game... bodybuilding is another corrupt sport they do the same thing... bodybuilders like to break their trophies, because of the trophies that they didn't get!
Too bad though her scored performances in competitions weren’t as expressive as this one or ‘Moon River’ or ‘When I Fall In Love’ needed instrumentals but I think they would have scored higher than house or rock music
Maybe they would have scored higher, but I think she also had the perfect Skating style for techno or rock Music. I think she excelled with both Kinds of Music...
The presence she had on the ice is something that is just incomparable
how can anyone say she was not artistic? her performances are all purely artistic she's a bad ass dancer she's expressing herself hence the art in it

Cher Cher I luv her smile when she performs. She had a very rough personal life. But yeah when she was on she was on fire!!
She is so pretty.
She actually is a pretty artistic skater. Girl can move!
This was just so incredibly well done. Absolutely gorgeous from start to finish. And the fact that she knows how to play with the crowd and get a reaction is adorable. She really was under-rated.
She's so cool.......
This is a beautiful program ❤️
Just beautiful!!
Как приятно смотреть на катание Тони!!!!!
Она замечательная прекрасная,необыкновенная,талантлива!!!!!
I think this music is the perfect match for this routine. I wish she had used it every time.
This was her kind of music. If the judges would have just let her be herself and scored her on her Talent rather than constantly arguing about her music choices everything would have turned out different for her
Her ending was everything
5:00 That is some sexy moves right there.🤩
She was tremendous. The best by a lot of that era. Best speed, best edges, best spins and we know all about those historic jumps. 🙌
Goodness
She looks adorable here.
In that dress and with those strong legs, god she looks like Chung Li from Street Fighter II.
❤❤
It's too bad that the confidence wasn't there to win the gold medal on her own without any interaction. She really was that good.

They didn’t ask anybody else do a triple axel EXCEPT her 😊.
Nancy who ?
Mother Tonya destroy your life. E gillolly the same
The splits and flying Spin were super sloppy. She can do better 😿
“No artistry” my butt! She’s so graceful.
One of the most beautiful and powerful skating performances I have ever seen...
It's definitely up there in top performances for me. She just made everything look so easy! (It's not!) Love this slow, classy song for her and her graceful skating here.
I love tonya 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Agree 100%!
Very true
Her layback spin is so beautiful

Her jumps still give me chills
I love her triple loop!

I agree, but Tonya really was so much more than just her (great) jumps.

@@itsallgoodman1244 yes it's definitely the judge's fault. You can't blame him for going with it tho!
I first saw Tonya Harding when she was about 14 on Ice, I knew she was headed for greatness!
Tonya Harding is the most beautiful skater on ice!
How did they expect her to land it she was completely out of breath. I used have really bad asthma and I know how hard it is to keep up your stamina, its almost impossible. Very true, she singled her axel and doubled her toe here. Definitely exhausted
Remember this wasn’t part of the competition, it was about entertaining the crowds. She was never being marked by the judges on this, she wanted to perform for the crowd.
Her Ina Bauer was the BEST!!!!
C. Marks It's so supported, so strong, and she's able to change direction fairly easily whilst remaining in that position for a long time, she was a true pro
Easily the most beautiful routine she did, absolutely mesmerising ❤️
I think she was looking to her coach Dody to say 'No your to tired'
She did this same routine in Oakland at Skate America that year. I just have to say though, the way they photographed it in Oakland was something special, with the long lens, compared to this
Thanks for putting this up!
Very nice!👍

Gisa zur Nieden yes I agree, but the association and judges felt it too tough and powerful and not graceful 🤷🏻♂️
Honestly if she had more of that training in her overall training then she might have fared out better on longevity of a career
Incredible skating performance & twice she falls that's bad I don't like it
