That lower hole in the feed dog was getting me, thanks for video. I got a second hand machine from a antique shop window and that hole was covered in grime so I though it was just a solid piece. Couldn't ask for a better video, no wasting time. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for posting this! I am using my grandmother's 1952 model on which she sewed many magnificent garments. She passed it on to my mom and I started using it in junior high school so that's where I learned to sew. My mom gave it to me as an adult and It's the only machine I've ever owned. I love it and it still works great! However, it wasn't until I finally decided to check out the original "guidebook" (which was always there but never really looked at) that I learned about the importance of oiling before each use. But even with the diagram and description in that book, I could not find some of the hidden spots. Your video was such a help!
One discrepancy between your video and the manual I have it that a drop of non-refined kerosene is supposed to be used on the bobbin shuttle (1:50 on your video). My manual reads, "EVERY TIME THE MACHINE IS USED, a drop must be put into the slot in the shuttle hook..." (Confession: I actually haven't ever done this.) Also, perhaps my machine is slightly different from the one in your video as it is on the older side.
One last general comment: Any time I have sewn on a more modern foot pedal-type machine, I am reminded of how wonderful the Elna knee control lever is!
Thank you again! I am so glad I found your very helpful video!

thank you for posting this. Three of the holes had totally eluded me in spit of using a magnifying glass and the manual. I am now good to go! Thx again.

Thank you so much!! I just got one of the tan models and it didn't come with a manual. I have since found one, but this has been so much easier in regards to showing me where to oil it. Hopefully it will be similar, and hopefully save me the $$$ of putting it in for a service this close to Christmas.

Cool video, I picked up one of these that's a supermatic, but it's a little earlier production than this one.
To change cams you have to unscrew a bakelite cap instead of the spring loaded plunger like on this and all newer models.
    Thanks.

Thanks for this video, it's super useful. I just got my great grandmother's green Elna Supermatic, still figuring out how to use it, etc. It is working but some smoke was coming out from the "front part" that you mention is easily taken off, any ideas why? Maybe it needs oil or had very old oil in there?!?

Thanks, I have just taken over a Supermatic too, it's the Beige version. Yours are a bit nicer though, all metal I assume. Mine has a few oil points in the cam area too, in connection with the zigzag stitch length functions. These old things often needs to be serviced and oiled behind the hand wheel and stop motion screw. It has to be disassebled. I have to search the web for all the info on it, the manual is missing. I can't make the cams stitch properly, only zigzag.

My Elna Supermatic looks the same as yours.
I am having a problem with the cams pop up and atop working after sewing a foot or 2.
I started stopping & pressing the cam back in place before it quits working. But, the cam really seems to be moving up.
Do you have any suggestions to fix?
Thank you for your patience and assistance.

This has been SO helpful. ..I have one of these lovely machines from my grandmother in beige (I am not young either) and don't honestly know how to use it, and the original manual is far too brief. I would love to be able to be in touch with you, just to understand the function of half the knobs..would you mind? To begin with, the stitch width lever (round dial lying horizontally flat under the Supermatic "door" that holds the stitch disks)...on mine has some gouges chipped where one of the settings used to be...other than centre, left and right, what is there? and if my thread keeps not catching the bobbin thread,..is that stale thread, or?? Or what?

I don't mind answering any questions you have. I am no expert but I will do my best. The protruding knob on the left (under the door) has the numbers 0 to 4 on it. This basically adjusts the stitch width on your pattern if you are using a cam/disk. The flat round disk or centering wheel to the right (under the door) will position you needle more to the left, right or any position in-between depending on what you need. This can be used in the sewing of button holes. That's all that is there as far as I know. As far as the thread not catching I am not sure. There might be something technically wrong with the machine, in which case you should bring it to a person who is qualified to examine it. Sometimes simply re-threading the machine works. Hope this helps

what type of oil are you using? will WD40 work?

    • @EhKay3
      @EhKay3  10 лет назад

I bought sewing machine oil so I cant comment personally on WD40. From what I read WD40 will evaporate and cause your machine to freeze. You can try mineral oil instead which can be purchased at a grocery store. Hope this helps :)

NO! WD40 isn't a proper lubricant. Get sewing machine oil.

colleenchenry Never, never, never use WD40 on a sewing machine. NEVER!

2:30 use o óleo Singer é o óleo que todas as máquinas usam na lubrificação
