  • What would you give for almost 100,000 gallons of crystal clear pond water?
    Wetland filters are by far the best means of filtering ponds to amazing water clarity. They are natural, very low maintenance, and they work with nature, not against her.
    Do you have a pond with algae and you can't see more than a few inches deep? You may have a problem that can be fixed with an aquascape wetland filter.

    I'm amazed how clear this pond is without other plans. Those upflows really work well

    That's absolutely fantastic. People/customers forget that rocks/gravel are filters. I really like the long water runs/brooks.

    3:30, if it were my pond I would start by adding scuds, daphnia, Mississippi grass shrimp, and maybe even live black worms. All of these are detritivores and form the base of an ecosystem(as food and as hard silent workers).
    Once they establish and are growing in numbers in all areas of the pond(hiding amidst the rocks and gravel, in the stream areas, etc) I would add fish that would keep their population in check. In goes the rainbow shiners/other shiner fish, top minnows(including flag fish, which mainly feed on hair algae, but will eat smaller critters).
    To keep those in check, once they start breeding and the population starts growing, alongside the micro fauna, I would add a predator fish. I would probably chuck in a grass pickerel or blue gill.
    Last but not least ornamental critters that still serve a purpose in the pond. Stuff like turtles, koi, and other ornamentals would be added. Turtles make good scavengers and will eat and scavenger sick or dead fish, and koi will help eat excess algae.
    Plants:
    Up stream where the water rises like a stream, I would add floating water weeds like eleoda. They feed from the water column and provide a place for shrimps and other detritivores to hang out on. Other plants I would add on the other stream areas are carpeting plants that feed from both their roots and their leaves, so stuff like dwarf saggitaria, jungle vallinseria(plant in deeper areas, with flow). These will provide more surface area for beneficial bacteria, via their root systems and leaves, but also they help by eating excess nitrates). Alongside other shallow areas of water, probably at the edges, I would plant creeping Jenny’s, parrots feather, and other marginal plants.
    In shallower areas with the finer gravel, like at 4:02, I would add more dwarf saggitaria and other aquatic plants, like red ludwigia. Would provide more shelter for smaller fish and detritivores hanging out in the shallower areas.
    In deeper sections I would add large clay/plastic pots and add water lilies and water lotus. Both feed very heavily from the water.
    I would add the ornamental critters last as they tend to be very destructive of plants that aren’t established. So the detritivores, smaller fish, and predator fish establish alongside growing plants. I wouldn’t mind having to wait a few years before adding koi or turtles. But watching that ecosystem grow before adding colorful characters would tie in the pond experience.
    The pond overall would be a paradise for turtles and other animals.

    If you can get some drone footage for that completion video, it would be cool to see the whole layout. Already amazing now. Hopefully down the road you get more footage after the plants have matured.

      GREAT QUESTION!!! 👍
      When we built it we used Aquascape 9pl pumps that drew 9 amps each, total of 10 pumps. 24,000 per year to run.
      We replaced all of them with the Oase ecomax pro 11,500 pumps that draw 3.5 amps at 220v.
      Saving the power draw by 70%
      They now have 2500 gph more flow at 70% less power consumption.
      Thanks for an outstanding question

    Amazing! So what is the size of the wetland and how many gallons per hour flow do you have running through it?

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  4 года назад

      I have 3 of them. Each one is 16 large aquablox, about 20x25' overall, 4 feet deep, and have a snorkel and a centipede. 10,000 gallons per hour through each.

  • @Eric.Mercado

    So I'm starting to think we are never going to see this project 100% completed which is such a shame and so disappointing.
    You've been compiling/editing your footage into a video for over two years now. So what's the deal man? With a project as awesome and impressive as this one, you'd think you'd be showing it off as much as possible once completed. So what's really going on with the adventure pond?

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  2 года назад

      That is an excellent question. I'm about to release it within the next few weeks. Here's the deal. This project actually has 3 parts. First the fountain, then the pond, finally, the waterfall.
      I've been compelling video so that I can do a documentary, with pictures from the beginning to mature.
      I'm currently wrapping up part 3 and have written the script for the documentary.
      We are very close...... thank you for your patience.

    Hope you planted out your wetland area before you add the koi in there. A spike in algae may insue, the reason why your water is so clear and very little algae growth has occurred is due to low levels of nutrients in the water and with the introduction of koi in the pond this will cause an imbalance.

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  2 года назад

      This water after 2 years is insanely clear. The wetlands are mature and we are featured in Aquascape's Hands of an Artist book. You cannot believe how stunning this pond is!
