What Color Is a Blue Whale?

- Did you know there’s been a blue whale model at the American Museum of Natural History for over 100 years? The huge icon hanging in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life has been a visitor favorite for decades. But over time, the way we see whales has changed dramatically as a once- hunted animal became a symbol of ocean conservation. Oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle tells the story of filming whales underwater, and Museum staff reveal how whale models have been refined through the years as we learned more about these mysterious ocean giants.

Well, I'm 70 years old and I remember as a child walking all around the first whale. I think the first one actually gave you a better idea of just how big it was since you could walk around it and get much closer. It was my second favorite exhibit, after the T-Rex who used to drag his tail on the ground. :) Thank you for this great video.
Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your memories! It does seem like you could almost reach out and touch that first whale.

I don’t think I’m ever going to forget walking through that hall back when I was 11 back in 2012 or so and looking up and seeing that whale. I don’t think I understood the size until I realized how long it had taken to walk from one end to another. This and the preserved giant squid will always be important memories to me
lucky you. when i went they had closed that whole exhibition hall because they were planning some big fancy party in there. it was the reason why I wanted to even go there
It terrified me when I went (I was 8 and thought it was a real whale). It looked real and I stared directly at it terrified to move. Eventually, I was guided to the rest. The giant squid completely bewildered me and sparked my admiration for marine life.

Thats very powerfull, thats exacly what i though the first time i swum in the ocean alone at night, just me and the vastness of mother nature
In the ocean alone at night? Gee you are brave.
Ocean at night is complete dark what's realisation you got at the time. I got the same goosebumps when heard that as well but mine was when I got to stargaze in complete solitude of mountain watching our galaxy in complete darkness is just amazing
This is so interesting, you should make a virtual tour of the Hall of Ocean Life.
That's a great idea! It's definitely on our short list of hall tours to come.
That's a great idea, but isn't it a challenge to give the best awe-inspiring view of these animals when we should be showing the truth about what we make them live through in the wild? Don't get me wrong, I'm down to see the turn out either way! Whales are awesome always! 🐋 🐳💙

I remember seeing that model at the museum when I was really young and it was actually terrifying because of how large it was and the fact that it’s just...hanging there from the ceiling!😟 super impressive in hindsight!!
the animation part was really beautiful!
I love Sylvia Earle’s closing statements here. They perfectly encapsulate why I so greatly enjoy and appreciate museums and zoos.
Her words at 12:38 specifically speak to me; on my 20th birthday, I stood in front of the Blue Whale model and declared that by the time my 30th birthday rolls around, I will have had the opportunity to have been in the water with one (hopefully as a documentary filmmaker).
If I am able to, I plan on returning to the museum on that day to visit the Whale again and say that I’ve done it. (And if this video is still online at that time, I will be sure to come back here as well to say the same!)
Thank you for sharing this piece. I hope everyone joking about the color question comes away with the same sense of awe and admiration for these animals that I did.
I like blue whales because of their size. It is so amazing to see how certain animals can grow to immense sizes and be so elusive.
Whales are so magical. I sometimes wonder if us humans are even from this planet. We don't seem to fit in here.
We were strategically placed here
We’re an odd bunch but if you look at the apes past and present it does kind of make sense
@@OtterThanMost That's what I'm thinking.
@@oisin3495 I get that but even the smartest ape documented didn't surpass the intelligence level of a young human child. At least as far as their behavior that we understand. But, some argue we aren't the smartest mammal on the planet but we think we are because of language barriers. Who knows. Just me thinking outloud on RUclips again 😆
We fit here perfectly. Everything about us functions exactly how you'd expect a sapient animal that managed to create society would. Ironically, the reason you think we don't belong is BECAUSE of your human-centric view. You're putting our morals, our views, on the natural world, and forgetting that nature is neutral. We were forged through the fires of evolution, and we act EXACTLY how natural selection selected us to.

This is actually a good question. Blue coloring rarely occurs in living things. I guess this is an exception along with a few birds, fish and insects.
To think paleontologist knew dinosaurs' colorations...
Sometimes. It’s very rare but sometimes bits and peices of their pigment cells may fosilize giving us a glimpse into what they may have looked like. Don’t get me wrong they definitely won’t be 100% accurate as their only small patches and aren’t common at all. So really palaeontologists just like any scientist has to they guesstimate to fill the holes.
@Nic B exactly as I said.
@@hotdogpepper8410 but we can still guesstimate based on fossilized pigments.
Anyone saying you can't, just look up Anchiornis or Sinosauropteryx
I just find it amazing how scientist knew how some of dinosaurs colors even though they've been extinct for millions of years and here they've only recently depicted what an animal with us today really look like.
I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to visit this museum. The one time we go to America, and of course we have to hit all the best museums on the East coast. Thanks dad :')
That explain why when I was in like third grade, they told us in a presentation in a museum that BLUE whales where nearly black and they were called blue because some parasites on their skin makes them looks gray bluish.
Is a wonder what few years of difference can make in a still ongoing scientific investigation.
Can you do "What color is the Orange fruit?". Explain the history how orange became orange. Please. Im interested of this for a long time.

When the oceanographer lady said, "We are a part of it, not apart from it," I got chills.
My local aquarium has a realistic, life-sized humpback whale model with her calf and that's pretty incredible to see in person. Photos really can't do justice to how enormous and magnificent these creatures are. I remember the first time I saw a real elephant at my state zoo I was blown away at how huge they were. It's such a travesty the way humanity has treated the gentle giants of our planet.
What a wonderful video. I had my finest inspiring educational experiences at all the museums on the National Mall. I was dumbstruck by models of the 2 mamalian giants: Blue Whale and Bull Moose. Museums are so important to give humans the concept of "The Big Picture", rather than a miopic World view.
I realized my childhood dream when I worked for the National Museum of the American Indian(2000 - 2004).

Animated earl dancing with a whale is the greatest thing I’ve seen
When I was a little kid, I went to AMNH, and, upon seeing the blue whale, I wanted it.
When I see the surface view of blue and the fin whales the top side look similar to the bow top side of an ocean liner. They are so immense it’s hard to really imagine what they look like up close. They do always look blue when photographed from the air.
I've gone whale watching once when I was 7 and we saw some fin whales but we got also got a visit from an Atlantic Right Whale. Even saw it breach. Whales are my favorite sea life for this reason.
What a phenomenal video!
Can you share some knowledge of megalodon shark, which was once known as largest animal of the world

I tend to think for animals, "blue" usually is some kind of gray, usually not very blue.

blue-coat dogs are gray or silver
Something gray against its otherwise blonde, black or brown counterparts will definitely appear blue. As yellow is the complimentary color to blue/cyan, the absence of color will appear blue.

I wish there was a program that allowed civilians to be trained on how to assist in environmental conservation. I think that would have a far larger effect than; recycle, turn off lights, don't use too much water, don't use too much paper, don't use too much plastic and when/if you do make sure to properly dispose of it... and all the rest.
I'm disabled so I'm not sure if I could help, but I want to try. It's just... where's the resources?
How do we go to the oceans and help clean and protect? How do we go to deforested areas and plant saplings? How? How much more needs to be done that just isn't being done either because people aren't aware or just don't know how to help?
Are there groups in major cities that go to polluted areas and clean trash and other things?
Is there a way to get large percentages of the world population to engage in environmental cleanup, community service, or other things that can help better our planet and all organisms that live upon it?
How many people WANT to help but just don't know how?
Just imagine hunting an animal just to put it in the museum
