I hated Andy the first season. But I loved what the writers (and Dennis Franz) did with his story arc over the next 11 seasons. Great acting and great writing - - - - you go from wanting to see Sydney take another shit-kicking to feeling sorry for him..........all in about 20 seconds.
An aspect of interviews being audio- taped is something NYPD didn't do routinely. In many cases, like this one, it would have been helpful. Phil Lamarr was excellent as Sidney.
Too bad Danny was already spiraling and didn't understand that Andy just afforded him an opportunity to right himself. I think Clark was much more aware of his own issues and more willing to work on them.
In my opinion - there are only 2 actors cast into rolls that each actor made those characters life like and lived to be infamous forever: Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowitz
The directors of that show need much more love. Cause it is one thing to have great actors, like Phil LaMarr, but without excellent directors, they won't shine like this.

amazing how perception of police has changed. One cop is covering up another cop's unjustified police brutality, and the scene wants us to look at andy like a hero. How could things have played with body cams and cellphone video back then?
Back when police were actually effective. Nowadays, they're so handcuffed we have people casually shoplifting stores while cops stand by and film, cops running away from violent scenes and cops not being allowed to react while violent rioters throw explosives at them.
They don't exactly glorify station and city politics in the process. They highlight a lot of the inequalities and portray Sipowicz as a racist who gradually overcomes his own shortcomings. There are far more police shootings and corrupt cops and gun violence is not glorified. Compare this show to the OJ Simpson Trial or the Rodney King Trial and there is more depth of character. The politics behind police violence is far worse in most cases than the officers who are stuck cleaning up the messes our bankrupt system leaves behind. Hill St. Blues portrays the time it was made as does NYPD Blue. Neither show will win political points for political correctness but compare it to the Dick Wolf Copaganda or CSI BS and it displays the warts and all. The only comparable series I can think of is The Wire. It is sad we extend reasonable doubt so readily to predators like Bill Clinton and Donald Trumo while making broad generalizations about police officers most of whom never pull their guns or assault anyone but go to scenes of domestic violence repeatedly while politicians make sure the victims can't afford to walk away.
