    I love ancient history too, how the people lived, how they communicated with other civilisations, how aware they were about the world. A beautiful history lesson, Anna, with examples of beautiful artifacts and illustrations; a simple-but-beautiful studio filming scene: your black clothing stood out against the grey wall, illuminated by your golden neck-piece, visage and blond hair which matched the colour of the dry rushes placed on either side in the background, while from the corner the mirror reminded us that we always need to reflect upon history & culture. Bravo, O strong-hearted woman, daughter of ancient warriors!

      The Ukrainians aren't descendents of the Scythians or Sarmarhians though. It is a part of the Ukrainian history, like the Gallic tribes are part of French history or the Bretons with English history. Whilst it undoubtedly influenced Ukrainian culture, etc, these aren't predecessors of the Ukrainians.

    • @dylanvogler2165
      @dylanvogler2165 Год назад +13

      @troygoggans5495 the Rus' are a predecessor to both. The Rus' split into the Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians (and Rusyn). Not dissimilar to how the Franks are the ancestors of Germans, Dutch, Flemish and French.
      With normal countries, you can share this history (as the Germans, French and Dutch do), but in the case of Russia this is sadly impossible because they claim they are the Rus' and therefore everyone descended from the Rus' are Russian. Maybe on the day that the Russians realize that the Rus' =/= Russia but a predecessor which is shared with their neighbours, this history can be shared normally.

      There is earlier history still: among others, from before the time that the Black Sea became a sea after having been a much smaller though still very large fresh water lake. (You might call it prehistory as there was no local writing* at the time, but there is much physical evidence, a lot of it under water.) *Was just reminded that the neolithic Cucuteni Trypillia Culture, part of which occupied current day Ukraine, did have a system of writing only discovered recently (may not have been deciphered yet). BTW, the Ruzzians are trying to claim these finds exclusively for themselves. Typical

    This "Discover Ukraine" series is going to be so great. You know, I am a child of the Cold War when most history of the nations making up the USSR was largely unavailable to us here in America. After the Soviet Union collapsed, I genuinely looked forward to learning more about these nations and their histories and cultures. This desire has come true in certain cases when I traveled to former Soviet states like Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan or Ukraine.
    The Scythians, Sarmatians, and even the Cossacks were all cultures which seemed fascinating to me but were not really taught about here in American schools since we were somewhat isolated from Eastern European academia. Ukraine's quest to integrate with the West and become an open, democratic society has really opened up some of these unknown histories to me.
    There was a time when I thought I might find as much interest in Russian history, too. But now I find that so much of what Russia calls its history has actually been assimilated from the states it conquered. They still lie, misrepresent or twist aspects of their culture to fit the glorious narrative of the Kremlin. It's like the Iron Curtain never fell for them. And I have lost my patience waiting for them to be honest about their history.
    So thank you, Anna, for this great new series. I will look forward to more episodes! Пізнаймо Україну!

      Interesting you should say that! I had a relative who went to see was a one-off Smithsonian travelling exhibition of Moscow Treasures and Traditions, in Washington, D.C. I have the book he got that portrayed what was on display at that exhibition. He was, as he said in 1990, "Underwhelmed!"
      I have only skim-read snippets of the book. The photographs of the artefacts are somewhat depressing. There's an image of a 1862 painting, by Vasily Perov, 'Drinking tea in Mytishchi, near Moscow', and the description of it speaks volumes.
      I am excited to see so much of the wonderful cultural history and artefacts, showing up on our global radar now.

      Scythians, Sarmations, Ossetians, Alans are ALL Iranians tribes. Most Iranians that live in the present day Iran used to live in Europe on the banks of Danube. They moved east toward present day Ukraine and Southern Russia and went through the Caucasus mountains. Along the way they were multiple branches and realignments and they all spoke Iranian languages. The Ossetians and Alans who live north of the Republic of Georgia speak a very similar language as people in Iran (differences are similar to Irish and English, Scottish). BTW, Scots are Scythian in origin!

    • @Asfarnulis
      @Asfarnulis 4 месяца назад +1

      Ossetians are not Scythian-Alanians. And they do not speak the Alanian language. Scythian-Alanians are the ancestors of the Karachay-Balkar Turks. In all written sources in history, it is written that the Alans are Turkish people and speak Turkish. Even the Turkish decipherment of the Zelenchuk Alanian inscriptions has not been accepted due to Indo-European fanaticism.

    Thank you, Anna and Sasha! I'm really enjoying this new series of 'Discover Ukraine' videos. I noticed your pectoral straight away, Anna. It's very pretty, and apt, but in a nice, delicate way.
    I hadn't heard of this ancient pectoral before, but it is very ornate, and one can clearly see how it depicts the love of nature and what she has to offer us if we look after her well. The other traits, of being horsemen, warriors, nomadic, and working the land/livestock, while being very progressive and adventurous enough to be able to sustain life, all run true today in every Ukrainian. So, yes, I can see where Ukrainian roots stem from, and what would lead to this side of Ukrainian ancestry. (I like that you corrected with the *descendants, I always used to get confused over those two, years ago, and I wouldn't have a clue what their Ukrainian equivalent words are (yet)))
    This pectoral simply *has* to stay where it is while war rages throughout Ukraine. Certainly, russia cannot just waltz right in and steal such important artefacts; it has stolen far too much from Ukraine as it is!!! But Ukraine is most definitely immortal. And she lives and breathes in many of us... millions and millions of us, all over the world!

This is not unusual among humans who've gone through traumatic experiences in troubled periods of history. Talking about it can actually help, and may also serve to help prevent such things from recurring. However, you can't blame the individuals from coping how they think best.

    Fascinating! "The dominant ethnic groups among the Scythian-speakers were nomadic pastoralists of Central Asia and the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Fragments of their speech known from inscriptions and words quoted in ancient authors as well as analysis of their names indicate that it was an Indo-European language, more specifically from the Iranic group of Indo-Iranic languages.
    Most of the Scythian languages eventually became extinct, except for modern Ossetian (which descends from the Alanian dialect of Scytho-Sarmatian), Wakhi (which descends from the Khotanese and Tumshuqese forms of Scytho-Khotanese), and Yaghnobi (which descends from Sogdian). ...
    Early Eastern Iranic peoples originated in the Yaz culture (ca. 1500-1100 BC) in Central Asia.[9] The Scythians migrated from Central Asia toward Eastern Europe in the 8th and 7th century BC, occupying today's Southern Russia and Ukraine and the Carpathian Basin and parts of Moldova and Dobruja. They disappeared from history after the Hunnish invasion of Europe in the 5th century AD, and Turkic (Avar, Batsange, etc.) and Slavic peoples probably assimilated most people speaking Scythian.[citation needed] However, in the Caucasus, the Ossetian language belonging to the Scythian linguistic continuum remains in use today, while in Central Asia, some languages belonging to Eastern Iranic group are still spoken, namely Pashto, Pamir languages and Yaghnobi. ..." Is that the one where the Romans had earlier defeated the local Brythonic tribe(s)? If you are English, your DNA is likely still mostly Brythonic. The Saxons took over the culture and language, but their numbers weren't great enough to completely dilute the preexisting gene pool .

    In my country Sweden, we also have the tradition that our culture comes from the Schytians, who we call Skyter. And bort of our countries have related gold works, almost the same. It is very clear we have connections. Those super small advanced gold animals are so advanced that nobody understands how they could make them so far ago.
    Search for the Ållebergskragen as an example of this att work. And also the Vittene gold. Look at how similar it is to the gold found in Ukraine.
