Pink Floyd is definitely one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Especially their two albums Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall made them immortal.
The only constant member of the band from day one until today is their drummer Nick Mason and this video is all about how you can recreate his drum sound.

I got and loaded these GREAT samples! And I played them live via edrums on my channel. Thanks for these excellent recreations, AoD!
Finally!! Nick Mason is one of the underrated drummers in my opinion, one of my influences!
@@klinsmann6706 I agree usually, the word has almost lost its meaning with how often it’s thrown around, though in this case I would say it’s used appropriately, saying it’s their opinion for one and two Nick Mason is quite unknown considering how famous of a band he was in (outside of musicians/fans that is, and even than really)
@@didybopintitys exactly!
@@klinsmann6706 I think Nick Mason is less talked about than John Bonham, for example. Whereas led zeppelin has less albums than pink floyd. Of the underrated, it's even easier to find something about Ringo Starr and John Desmond than about Mason. Even among Pink Floyd fans, there are more stories about Gilmour, Waters, Barrett and even Richard Wright than about the drum sound on the albums.
Definitely, he has an incredibly laid back and straightforward style that often goes unnoticed. Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts and him I'd say are in a club entirely of their own.
At the end of the day, the simple way wins. Simplicity over virtuosity.
If you really want to play like Pompeii-era Nicky Mason, you also have to have a headband and a shirt with a butterfly imprinted on it.
And, study carefully how he plays the ride cymbal -- his expressiveness on the ride is what separates him from all the other rock drummers out there. Nobody did it better.
The performance of Echoes at Pompeii was an absolute masterpiece. Nick's drumming was stunningly compelling. I thought, however, that his work on the ride was not treated properly in the final mix. To me it sounds a bit harsh.
If there is something that Mason lacks, it is expressiveness. What he plays on Live in Pompeii and throughout his career is terrifying.
I think even Ringo had amazing swing control on the ride, so did John Densmore (the doors)
@@alejandrobustos2268 Going to assume you've never heard the ride cymbal playing on the second half of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. If that isn't 'expressive' to you, then you don't know the meaning of the word.
2:39
it is in 7/4 my guy
Pink Floyd on 4.20
Nicely timed.
Can you do RUSH next. 🥁
Omg YES! Brilliant. Yes please do Neil Peart's sound next. Undeniable drumming genius.
Nicks drumming live especially 1969-72 he was a beast. The drums on the ummgumma live album are amazing. One of the of the most underrated drummers of all time
Dude literally has any and all drums and cymbals available to him. It’s a beautiful thing
Right! Lets use Zildjians to recreate the sound of a drummer who famously used Paiste (as an endorsee) since 1971!! Great idea! Cmon man, its not that hard to be more accurate.
Nick also doesnt always use only b8 butmixes mostly b20 and paiste b8, well since the 70s..
I saw Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets last year. He’s still incredible, as are the rest of the band and his live tone is ridiculously good
mostly ridiculous.
The drumming and the drum sound are great but you need a nice set of Paiste to recreate nick’s cymbal sound .
I feel like Nick gets a bad rap for being untaught, but he still serves the song better than most trained drummer.
Its what you leave out isn't it
Yes, so much so that they replaced it in the studio. Mason is very bad, he is together with the Metallica drummer, they are the worst drummers in the history of rock, well, pop when it comes to Pink Floyd.
@@alejandrobustos2268they didn’t replaced it, besides, try to play drums as Nick Mason does
@@Westlover808s They replaced him in the studio, with Jim Keltner and Carmine Appice, for example. It's very easy to play like Nick Mason, even a kid can do it.
@@alejandrobustos2268 i dont think a kid has the same coordination and timing such as Nick Mason in Pompeii 1971.
Nick mason is an outstanding drummer! Definitely a legend to never overlook!
Could you do Matt McDonough from mudvayne in the near future?
A good drummer makes the drums sound better; a GREAT drummer makes the SONG sound better. Nick was a great drummer.
I've been waiting for a video on Nick Mason for so long so I'm definitely happy for this, man, he's such a great drummer
Nick Mason was using Paiste cymbals by the time they did Live in Pompeii.
He always used Paiste ,and still does.
@@rabidwookie606 I believe he said in an interview WAY back in the '90s that he used Zildjians for The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but yeah, he's been sponsored by Paiste since '71 iirc. Really though if you have a good well-made cymbal that has care put into it then it doesn't matter whether it's Sabian or Zildjian or Paiste it'll sound great all the same.
I've been so excited for this video! I would also love to see a video about mitch mitchell.
Oh yeah mitch mitchell would be awsome
9:39 i thought that was gonna start out Iron Man by Black Sabbath. sounds pretty much on point!
Nick Mason live at pompey wearing that head band, such an iconic drum set, he has always been my favourite drummer, Awesome job with the video, really interesting. Nice work
SO GOOD!!!
Excellent! Absolutely unique and distinctly mystical sound of the genius mesmerist Nick Mason. He always plays a melody, his drumming is a poetry, a heartbeat of the great unknown.
It’s about time 👌🏽
on time with the eclipse. very nice 👍
Unlike most high profile drummers, Nick Mason can't be judged by his technique, technical abilities or even his sound. Nick should only be judged by the feel that he imparted to Floyd's works. If you don't have his sleepy almost insensitive demeanor then don't even try to go there. It might seem derogatory to say that about him but that's just the truth. A massive amount of Floyd's delivery was rooted in Nick's sensibility which is total deadpan, like his personality. Imagine being a vocalist or guitarist or keyboardist and taking the stage with him, that would be like a wet towel was just draped over your soul to most people. But, to the other members of Floyd that was their security, he was their rock, he was the canvas upon which they could paint and his steadiness meant that they didn't have to work very hard to build in textures upon textures. His playing is very contemplative. Next time you listen through any post Syd Pink Floyd album realize that it's NOT just Roger Waters' depressing lyrics making the mood stoic but equally the feel and pulse of Nick's drumming. The man was their not so secret weapon. Think about it, he never had to submit a catchy/quirky Bohnam-esque Good Times Bad Times lick to help get billions of hours of radio play for the band.
Excellent. Very true and beautifully articulated. I’ve always been intrigued by Nick Mason. Not only his drumming, but what you so perfectly describe as his “sleepy almost insensitive demeanor” and his “deadpan” style. I absolutely love his section on Ummagumma, The Grand Vizier’s Garden Party. It’s such a mysterious track, and really reflective of Mason himself.
His live sound is, in my opinion, one of the best I've ever heard. The way his toms sound huuuuge but at the same time they leave a lot of room for the guitar and all the layers of keyboards. All combined with his minimalist but solid aproach in songs like SORROW. This song has one of my favourites bass lines and is because Nick allowed it to be heard. So great 👌 well done guys, you really nailed it
Thanks so much René!
Y'all need to do an episode on Abe Cunningham from Deftones, the drum sounds on White Pony are among the best ever recorded
been waiting for this for so long
I would like to hear ,,Echoes" as an cover. I know it's not ,,world famous", but it would be really cool, I think!
Amazing job man, thanks for that! I've a PinkFloyd cover band in Brazil and you help me a lot to understanding the correct tunes.
I always wondered what your preference of build around the kit would be and your drum style. Great videos keep ‘em coming
Superb presentation. Brilliant analysis. Bravo! I saw “Pink Floyd” perform “DSOTM” live at Denver University in 1972. It was a dazzling musical perspective changing performance. Bravo!
Nick is the most laconic drummer ever to hit a skin. Has he ever broken into a sweat at work?
Lol so true!
The Wall drum sound is probably my favorite off all time
Thank you so much AOD for making this. i have been subscribed for a while now and i was hoping for pink floyd because i have tried to find their sound. I would love to see levon helm of the band sometiime.
Hey, thanks so much for your feedback. Glad you enjoy our stuff!
Nice work!👍
Timeless!
Some of my favorite drum tracks from Nick Mason:
“Atom Heart Mother Suite”
“Careful with that Axe, Eugene” live at Pompeii
“Us and them”
“Any colour you like”
“Dogs”
Would be interesting to try and recreate the Pulse album live sound😀
NICELY DONE
Did you ever heard Biding my Time? Nick absolutely blows the shit out the double bass!!
Great Video!
I need A Nick Menza Megadeth’s drummer recreation 😂🙌
Excellent
Hey You from The Wall has some of the best tom sounds of all time!!!
Josh Freese in any era, but particularly his tenure with A Perfect Circle, would be fantastic to hear! Always love hearing what you guys come up with, mindblowing how it's pretty much spot on every time :)
Absolutely gorgeous as always!!! Are you planning to do Keith Moon as well?
yes we are ;)
🤷♂️What’s the story with the little Lavalier Mics bouncing up and down and hardly taped to the toms in the Pompeii movie?🤔
This one might be murder on pascal, but could you do Mario Duplantier?
I'd love to see a ginger baker episode!
I love what you do with this channel. However, being a drummer, the only control we have over our sound in the studio is how we hit the drums. He’s probably more consistent than most. It’s still studio, and live sound is a different beast. Especially in the day of point source vs line array systems.
Really cool to hear!! Do Will Calhoun from living colour if you guys did the cult of personality sound that’d be awesome
This is an amazing video, but I wish you also played some different styles of music with this sound for us to understand how this setup would sound like in different musical scenarios.
I don't know why, but my favorite drum sounds from Floyd have always been split between Echoes and Hey You.
Great! Have you done Bill Bruford? Terry Bozzio's would be difficult? Amazing drummers especially in my favorite band, UK (1978-1979).
I’d love a video on Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden from you guys heh. SPECIFICALLY what he played from Piece Of Mind-Powerslave. That’ll be a MASSIVE kit.
Its actually in 7/4! no hate tho, i always thought it was 7/8 until my band director corrected me. great video as always though guys!
👽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Could yall recreate the drum sounds from p.o.d. youth of the nation
Where can one suggest a drummer for you guys to look in to?
We always read the comments so feel free to suggest.
@@ArtOfDrumming ok. After watching this segment about Nick Mason, it got me thinking about different drum sound from different albums.
Black Sabbaths Bill Ward came to mind.
For many albums he had a very high pitched (almost jazzy) sound.
But then on the album Heaven and Hell he got a very "stubby" almost choked sound, which in itself sounds not so good. But in the whole all over sound picture fits perfectly in to what they were doing then.
I know there is a video somewhere where only the drums can be heard.
As B.S. is one of rock biggest bands ever, it could be interesting to look into.
Awesome, as laways!
I believe it was a 5x14 supraphonic on LIVE at POMPEII
Nick is one of Terry Bozzios favorite drummers
THANK YOU THANK TOU THANK TOU
Do you have drum dial or Tunebot numbers for your recreation videos?
I don't think they would've used a bottom mic on the snare. Alan Parsons said he almost never does that. Mason also wouldn't have used the double bass in the studio, that was only for live.
Sean Kinney from Alice in Chains would be a great drum sound to do .....Just asking nicely .... Pleeeeaaassseeee....
Question - Did Mason ever play double bass or was it just for show/visual?
Recently he plays it on Astronomy Domine with his own band, but I'm not sure about his time with pink floyd
Echoes, any colour you like
Hey, guys, could you do Nick Folio (Bad Omens)? Would be sick!
On sounds like a drum he compares aluminum to maple wood snare with everything different hardware and they sound almost identical!
My uncle is the drummer for a pink Floyd cover band Pink 4reud
I never thought about the fact that there are different drum sounds (guitarist xD)
9:38 the kick drum sounds almost identical to the opening of Iron Man
Are the shells Luan or Phenolic? Thank you.
Those are Luan shells 👍
@@ArtOfDrumming Thank you.
You guys are seriously the best! Tommy Lee for a future Recreating Iconic Drum Sounds
👍👏✌☮
You guys should do a video on "Tommy Lee" of Motley Crue's drum sound?
Thanks for making the video I requested, this is amazing. Good luck @ArtOfDrumming keep up your good work!
Pls do sepultura drum sound 🙏
It's a shame you didn't get into Nick's use of double bass. It's interesting because it's a very unconventional aproach. Listen to Us and Them and the ending of Echoes at Pompeii for example.
Yeah agreed, he rarely used it for the main groove, instead he used it to add more colors to the song.
2:38 Don't want to pick a fight but, I'm pretty sure it's in 7/4 Edit: Sorry, it's still a good video, thanks!
You guys should do Cory coverstone from dirty honey !!!
Can you do Aron Mellergård from Dirty Loops drum sound?
If I recall correctly, the solo is in 4/4 because Gilmour just didn't want to do a 7/8 solo lol
Nice video. Another Brick in the Wall II sounds very Funky, Disco. Do you agree with me?
Can you guys try to copy Alan White’s drum sound from Oasis, espcially from 1995-1997.
Would love to hear that becasue he is the drummer that inspires me the most and got me in to drumming.
Please recreate the drum sound on Where Is My Mind by Pixies
Should do oasis or blur next
Amazing sound ! ❤️🇨🇴🤘
That felt strip has to compromise the rims bearing edges, or bend the bass drums batter head some. What clearance does a head have with the rim, zero space. Its a odd concept to me. Its similar to the snares gate which is uneven but for a reason because of snare wires. The internal drum muffler makes more sense or one that bounes when you strike the head!
Why no mention of his fibes kit?
Can you pleas make the scorpions drum sound as next
When's Bill Ward of Black Sabbath coming out?
You should do Neil Peart next
The MORE soundtrack is crucial to understanding Pink Floyd. Time and space, visual sound.
Please next time with giant beats😢😅
Bill Ward from Black Sabbath
Cimbals Live pompeii
Paiste Giant Beat
Please make Ricky Lewis 🙏(drummer of The Weeknd)
How come y'all got the bass drums backwards?
The one and only Nick Mason drum set that should be considered is taken from the Pompeii video (One Of These Days)
The immense drum solo in the second half is mind blowing.
He didn't even miss a beat when he lost a stick and pulled out another one to continue as if nothing had happened!!!!
It's all in the video. ❤ The Mason!
you forgot sid barret he is the mastermind of early era
