We learned cursive in the 2nd grade. My mother had beautiful penmanship, whereas my father wrote like a scientist. Told his secretary that she must've been a brain surgeon, bc she could decipher his mess. I recently learned that this writing skill is not required of elementary students in some of out Pensacola schools. Was absolutely stunned! You are so right in that it is a motor skill which can diminish w/time if you don't practice, & that has happened to me. I print 99% of the time, but on occasion enjoy practicing my cursive. Thank you for this pleasant & enjoyable video.
I learned cursive in 2nd grade elementary. I never could write print outside of uppercase, and even those uppercases I've consciously transitioned back to cursive lately for style reasons. (Sole exception being mathematical equations and technical drawing, cursive uppercase has no business in that field.) While I am no calligrapher by any means and even had a period where I didn't enjoy _any_ sort of writing, I was compelled and taught to make my writing at least legible, and that's a standard I've upheld ever since. It has paid off now that I've started writing Japanese with its distinct writing system, and I'm sure it'll be a boon with Russian as well with its Cyrillic alphabet. It's shambolic that the US has excised handwriting from the curriculum, as if we needed the next generation to be even more tech-dependent than they currently are. This establishment is breeding semi-illiterate zombies. I hope that, like most things in history, it's subject to the pendulum effect and handwriting, especially cursive, comes back more and more. It's a prime exercise for hand-eye coordination, neatness, and a way to get things written at all when the power supply is cut for one reason or another.
I had actually thought of asking you a month or so if you could make a video on cursive writing. But I did not want to appear demanding. this is a wonderful video. I am really grateful.And it goes straight to the point. Like many others, I learned cursive as a kid ( am 31) but forgot over the years. But when I read literature, like poetry, I like to take notes. I dislike the way my print writing looks. Upon doing this exercise, I seemed to have remembered certain things, like the capital D, which I learned to do with 2 loops, one on top and one on the bottom. But I feel like I'm learning to write all over again. My hand lacks the coordination..I used the faber castell #2 American- made pencil for this. It seems as if if it was designed for cursive writing

I like your cursive style very much and I think that your use of such a book is a very good idea as way of practice. I think I really choke up the most writing cards. I tend to write in print form when I write to foreign friends as cursive is a little different in some European countries and it's best to slow the content down to be as legible as possible. So I do adjust my style and content to my audience depending on the quality of their English. I also write out words entirely such as 'I will' rather than 'I'll' or the like. I forget what the grammatical term is. It takes longer but I want to be understood. Also when writing to developmentally challenged or people with vision problems I print larger and bolder.
Hi TuckerSP2011 - I appreciate how you alter your writing style to best suit the person you are writing to. I think that is very important and courteous. Sounds like you don't use contractions (e.g., don't, I'll, wouldn't) when writing, and that is helpful if someone's understanding of English is limited. Thanks!
This is great! I see there is a second video in the Handwriting and Penmanship list but its hidden. Will you be coming out with another video of this kind? My mother always scolded me for my penmanship growing up, as I do have a tendency to write too fast and my hands always cramped up, probably because I've been holding my instrument the wrong way!

Writing too quickly is a reason that many of us struggle with good handwriting - slow it down and you'll find you will have a little more control. I'm sure I learned cursive correctly at some point in the hazy, distant past. But I can't recall ever knowing how to properly form capital cursive letters. When I do write cursive, I simply swap in print-style capitals. Maybe I'll take this opportunity to learn?
Hi MAMO - The cursive caps are often the most challenging letters to write, so I think many people (myself included) sometimes use a "hybrid" script that combines printing and cursive. But if you have the lower case cursive letters down, then all you need to focus on is the caps and you'll have your set! Thanks!

I've always written cursive, but for the sake of speed during school I did all of my capitals in print form. It's only now that I'm more settled in life that I stated re-learning the cursive caps, and I'm having a ball with them, including customizing a few that I don't particularly like in the shape they're taught at school like the A or the Z. Same for the lowercase K, which in my taught form looks like a chair and is easy to mistake for an H.
Today I copied a Spanish sonnet by Garcilasco de la Vega, 16th century, in cursive writing. I used a dixon ticonderoga hb#2, cursive writing is really a joy. I actually work as a professional writer, but I use mainly a computer for typing and most of my life I've been using print- style when handwriting. But cursive writing just feels so different. Thank you. I wish I had used cursive all of these years. And regarding drawing, I didn't start drawing until last March. I always thought I didn't have talent for it. Give it a try. Drawing mainly requires attention to detail and hand coordination. I started with trees. Over time it will get easier. Now I even do portraits. The main tools are an HB pencil, a blending stump and an eraser. I'll add vine charcoal as well because it's so easy to work with. Check out smoothie77 for beginning landscapes.

Thanks for the encouragement to draw - maybe I'll start playing around with sketching a little bit. I never really had much talent for it, but never gave it much of a try. And I am from afar inflamed of your burning sight and on so much so that in life I barely support myself; more if I am attacked closely from your eyes, then I feel frozen the blood curdling through my veins
