** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

A while ago I posted a story that Rex read about my 84 year old neighbor, Bill, who for 6 years brought a bottle of cheap bourbon to my house, drank my premium malts and left with his still unopened bourbon. Well that bottle of Old Crow has finally been opened. Last week Bill passed away, and after we laid him to rest this week his son and I broke open that bottle to share a glass. We ended up killing most of the bottle. Up to the day he died he still worked his pasture, enjoyed our whisky and lived life entirely on his own terms. That seems pretty damn good to me.
Bobby Parnell. A consumate mooch to the end. Tis only fitting , then, that you drink HIS whiskey in his honor. Hoist a glass to the man that lived life well .
Damn good life. Condolences my friend and a glass raised in honor.
My condolences man
My Great Uncle drank Old Crow. Thanks for sharing the story, it brought back so many good memories of him.
Sorry to hear this, Bobby. A fitting tribute.
i am really digging this "poor man's" series! I hope you guys do more of these in the future!
Poor man's videos are true works of art for the us poor MBs.
Rex, you are a titan among mouchs that I aspire to.
On a paramedics budget it's hard to swing the hefty price tag for certain whiskeys, but I can get mighty close with this. Hats off to you fellas!
You guys have the best job in the world. Drinking whisky all day, talking smack, laughing and joking around wile learning more and more every single day about the beautiful world of whisky... I envy you two. Keep up the awesome videos!
Regards, a damn awesome fan of you two from Sweden, Kai Kahlin
I just realised that this week is probably the greatest asset to anyone who wants to build a proper whisky collection. If you got the money to buy all the inexpensive bottles this week, you'll be able to recreate a load of expensive whiskies and you end up having a 30+ bottles(I'm guessing) of pretty great whisky on its own.
Damn it Rex. I think your mooching skills have went full circle and you're starting to be educational!
Hey guys,
I'm loving #Rex.....time, partially for the information on how to home blend some amazing whiskeys, but mostly for the entertainment value of Rex's disappointment at the lack of bottles needed to blend each time. Daniel has one amazing taste and memory for which bottles to bring to the table.
I have been contemplating building a spreadsheet of the blends each day, however I am afraid of what my next run to the store will look like. I have tripled the number of bottles since I found the channel. I have binge watched all of the episodes and transitioned from craft beer to the wonderful world of whiskey.
I do have a request as someone who lives in the world of spreadsheets. Please bring back numbered episodes, it is killing the order in my head.
Thanks for the entertainment on both channels. I look forward to future shenanigans. Now that the comment is sufficiently long I hope Rex is forced to read the whole thing. Cheers
Longer episodes please 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Even the mooch brought some learnin' to today's episode.
I continue to be impressed by Daniel's blending ability. Make that man a Somm 4 already!
Dammit Daniel, you can not compare yourself to princess Leia in shackles and metal bikini. Now I see a Hobbit in a metal bikini before my inner eye. And the picture morphes itself to a bald Leia with a beard. I don't know which is worse....now I need a Whisky to get over this nightmare.
hahahahahahaha
I'm not sure if you want to know this, but in the books Frodo had at least 2 nude scenes that were cut out of the movie.
Just sayin'.
I read the books and loved them. The nudity didn't bother me. But imagine Daniel in a metal bikini is a whole new level.
Once, when jogging on the beach, I ran past a fat guy sunbathing in a thong. I can take anything.
I love you guys. Keep on doing the good work.
All hail King Daniel !!!
Daniel's laughter of resignation 2:26
Ahahahahaha..aww..
What have we done?
"I don't even drink" (I'm 20) and I watch your videos. They're so entertaining. On the day of my 21st I will only ask for whiskey.
Eduardo Boquin that's exactly why I'm here haha, I turn 20 in June so I'm learning up
Loving #rexWeek but Daniel is the MAN! with the whiskey notes. I watch everyday after work guys, while drinking whiskey. Love both of you guys! Thanks for teaching me so much, with a little comedy.
Whenever I watch the Whiskey Vault, I want to drink along with you. The problem is that I have been watching at around 10:00am and apparently this is too early for my wife.
She can watch the episode later and drink then ;)
Hey man it's not day drinking if you work nights. Of course if you dont have to go back to work later lol
you should take the time to write the amount of whiskey of each type of the blend in the video description, that would make it so much easier and accurate for us to do it!
Fairly new subscriber and first time commenting, I just wanted to thank you for teaching me so much about whisk(e)y in the short amount of time I've been watching. I'm very new to the world of whisk(e)y being only 23, but I've discovered I'm a big lover of bourbon. My first purchase of a bourbon over $50 to enjoy without mixers was actually Jefferson Reserve Very Small Batch, which I was happy to see make an appearance on this episode. And I hope Daniel will be pleased to know that I made my first foray into Scotch last night with Macallan 12 Sherry Barrel after enjoying a glass of Woodford Reserve; and I made an interesting discovery. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was picking up a similar overture of sweetness on the nose of both the Woodford and the Macallan. Is sweetness of that kind common for a scotch, or was the Sherry bringing that out? Anyways, I've gone on for too long, and wanted to say that I enjoyed the Scotch and I look forward to plunging myself further into this passion.
You guys are amazing. I have always preferred whisk(e)y over everything else as a drink. But i was lacking in exploration. Tomorrow I'm going to pick up some Highland Park 12 and Ardbeg An Oa if I can find some in South Carolina. If not I'm ordering that *cork sound* off masterofmalts.
Thank you guys for opening the door to a beautiful world of whisk(e)y!
We need more of these!
I work in a small office (4 employees) with a pretty laid back atmosphere. We have an overstuffed chair and ottoman in our reception area that is the go to relax spot. I was sitting there watching my phone when my coworker walks in, looks at me and says "New whiskey video?" and then walks to his office. Pretty sure you guys have given me the reputation as the whiskey guy in the office and I'm cool with that.
hahahaha. This is awesome.
Daniel is KING OF ALL THINGS!!!
Hey.....there was a moment around 1:15 where Rex's voice is like Johnny Depp's Hunter S. Thompson voice in the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas flick.... perhaps a Hunter S Thompson week/month/year would be fun.....filmed on the way to Las Vegas, of course..
Anyone else in constant awe of rexs unlimited mooch power??
And this is without even pulling out the necklace. This isn't even his final form.
It would be perfect if you could throw exact measurements down so we can try to best replicate what you do on the show. We could wing it based on dashes but we don't have anything to compare it to to know if we did it right.
You should review the whiskies you dislike the most. Just for fun.
I second that. Or whiskeys that you feel are overpriced. : )
Jaani Barclay Law Passed. Video needs to be next week.
Well what do you know... This is actually damn educational and fun at the same time. Hats off from yet another Danish viking in the growing crowd - to you Daniel for getting blends done right every freakin time. And hats off to Rex for going for the expensive stuff - only a true mooch can sniff out what's true quality ;-)
This is now the smallest amount of power I’ve seen anyone drunk with.
Rexyear is going great!
We love you guys
Just want to say as a representative of the people that these poor man's expeditions are really interesting. I realize they're a bit more costly to produce, but if branded right they might be interesting to a wide audience. Also, is Peat Week next?
Why do I enjoy watching Rex annoy Daniel so much?
I have really warmes to these guys actually, after my i itial wtf do Americans know about ANYTHING... I find myself chuckling along and loving Rex MONTH!!🤗
Love the REX week. P.S. Daniel is equal loved.
Once again the Somm nails it.
Long live the annual holiday of #RexMonth
Rex I am both surprised and disappointed that four days into Rex week you still haven't thought of a poor man's Macallan M. Daniel got it right as always... yet another good video guys
until not long ago i wasnt into whisky much at all, by accident stumbled across your videos and it made me want to try more. I cannot keep up with all the reviews as I really dont know enough, nor could i ever buy that many whiskys. but this poor man's version series is awesome and entertaining. keep it up =)
Thanks to Rex Week I now have a list of 19 bottles I need to buy just for the poor man's replica blends.
poor Danielle.. Rex week is crushing his soul...
Thank you for servicing the Ppeople
The nerd in me is loving Rex Month!
Hey guys, I got a bottle of the Balvenie 14 Caribbean cask for my birthday this year. As this is the first time I've had any type of aged whiskey, what would you recommend that's similar? I really enjoyed the bottle and plan on getting more
Loved these "Poorman Version" videos you guys should make more. 😁
"That's it."
Walks away like a boss
Thanks for the 11:18 minute break from reality. Cheers
Thanks guys you really made my day... again. All hail king mooch rex and Emperor Somm Daniel.
luckily I just found 3 bottles of longmorn 16 at a local liquor store... and with the advise of yesterdays video i bought all of them, for just 60 euro's each. It is in someway a mooch action for that price. I really looking forward to the pepper spikes you guys talk about.
Rex week seems to involve all of the same shirts.
been waiting all day for this.. love it haha
We need a little of all these mixture recipes.
Hi guys! Really enjoying Rex "week" I've watched every single episode. Awesome show Daniel is very knowledgeable and I want to nominate Daniel to do "Daniel week" and Rex you can only mooch if you nerd out too haha! Fair is fair! Keep up the good work.
I just looked for this whiskey online. Lowest price I can see it for is $1450. I'm actually feeling bad for Daniel.
I've been waiting for this video all day!
So what we are watching here is a microcosm of the work of a whisky blender....not doing copy work, but an exercise in ratios to create a new whiskey taste, ie Compass Box.
NH has pretty decent liquor prices, but I have a hard time picturing a $20 bottle of Bulleit Bourbon. Still. This series has been fun.
We the people, need a poor mans Kavalan Solist !!!
The fucking bell for rexx week, holy shit it gets me every time lol
👏👏👏👏 nailed it! Wow, I learned something from this video, I'm definitely a bourbon guy... as soon as you pulled down the bulleit In my mind I said "four roses next". I got almost all of them..... nice 😎
Ok. How close was it, and the exact bourbons used-including the four roses mashbill. 🤷♂️
Rex you missed out. The birthday bourbon is sooooooo good.
We'll see if this holds up Rex. I still have that tubesock by the way... trying to figure out what to do with it...
Daniel’s confidence is something to be envied
Ok seeing this for the first time. What’s the mix of these to create a 750 ml version of the blend?? Old Fitz is one of my favorite bourbons but I need a poor man’s blend to make it happen. Help! Tks guys. Love your channel.
Ever find out?
The way you guys could really get into money making would be to sell the identical blend recipes to bars/restaurants to save them big money in the long run.
I want you to explain (please) how is the opened whiskey's taste perform over time, I mean, alcohol evaporates, right? How long would you keep the bottle full.
If you drink a bottle in less than 3 months, you have nothing to worry about. A mostly full bottle will will last you years. half full at least a year. less than 1/4 and you have a few months before the evaporation becomes a problem.
Cheers! Poor man's series is gold, thanks again!
You can check out the test they did with Russell's Reserve Rye. They had saved a sample from a bottle that was mostly empty for months and compared it to a brand new one. ruclips.net/video/uvVdSyuI86A/видео.html
Long Live King Daniel!
LOL! I lost it on the nipple squeeze! 0:52
no offense but these videos are good and I enjoy them
I'm attempting to recreate this in a much larger batch. Do by chance have the exact (or as close to) measurements for this frankenwhiskey??
Hey, Daniel, what are some books you would recommend to someone looking to learn more about the history of whiskey, creation process, and other general knowledge? I hope you see this! The volume of comments has really taken off in the last couple months.
So many. Start with Lew Bryson's "Tasting Whiskey". for the nerdy direction, by "Proof" by Adam
Rex week/month/year is proving absolute power corrupts even the most 'classy' mooch. I miss the more.....humble mooch.
Rex, say it ain't so....
Man bun.
Please, say it ain't so!!!
Virginia does lottery bottles and I won two bottles in the same day. E.H. Taylor's Small Batch Bourbon and Single Barrel Bourbon. Should have them in my possession next week, just in time for a couple days off!
Is Virginia one of the states that sells all liquor through a state run agency?
Bobby Parnell Yes. Every month they have a few bottles that get put into lotteries. The winner still has to buy the bottles, but you win the privilege to buy them. Because it is state run it means stuff is usually $10+ more expensive than outside the state.
NC is also state run. I go back home to MI and go to a few different places to pick up items that are hard to find here. No competition = small selection
Having to buy it through state ran agencies sounds absolutely terrible! I couldn't imagine how annoying and inconvenient that would be when you're searching for something that's hard to find. Congrats on the win though! I picked up a bottle of Small Batch while visiting Buffalo Trace and I love it! Soooo good. I found the Single Barrel shortly after and it's really good too but not as good as the SB. That stuff is special.
charlie.g.hague Thankfully I live in a highly populated area, so the selection isn't horrible, and harder to find bottles are either lottery items or put in stores and limited to one per person while supplies last. When I was still Ohio, I would go to a private owned store and they and no selection to brag about for whiskies. So it isn't great in VA, but at least I am in a better place than others. Northern VA around DC area has tons of whiskey as I have been told.
Keep doing the Lord's work.
WOW!!! Impressive!
They really should have a half hour weekly tv program on some network I would even watch PBS to see them
I was able to try one glass of this a while back. It's terrific but I still prefer my scotch.
Rex week is just how to blend whiskys
Any chance you guys might list the amounts of each bourbon that was blended? Having the list is great but it's not as if we've had the JEF to know if we are close or not.
LOL 0:57 Love the nipple pinch, was it am homage to the South Park cable guys episode? Funny either way :)
I heard ucaliptus..prob spelt that wrong...but im a whiskey drinker down australia and may i recommend the neds australian whiskey 1st batch if you want extreme ucaliptus flavour whiskey experience..for only $40 ish dollars here in aus so be cheaper in u.s.a im guessing but if your interested I'll grab you's a bottle and i will get in touch to work out what address to send it 2 you just cause i enjoy what you's do .theres not many channels i go through to get opinions and do my research on certain bottles expecially products being more expensive in australia i need to really get the insights to see if i want 2 fork out and try the bottles here .but thanks guys love what you's do
Ezic
This continues to be a lot of fun. Im excited to see how tomorrow goes.
Oh, and did teach cam die (like I said it would?) Resist the gimmicks. You have great shit, here, you don't need to mess with it.
Any chance of doing a poor man's Midleton's very rare?
I vote for Rex month again
Is there like a master list of how much mooch the Mooch doth mooch?
#RexpensiveTaste
Please say you will be making blended whisky on your distillery! Daniel as a master distiller would be the bomb. I'll buy every single whisky you guys make. Now, for my weekly question: do the mini distiller kits that they sell on amazon work to make my own whisky? Assuming I buy a barrel and stuff.
those kits definitely will create something! only experimentation can make it good.
Whiskey Vault the product I will get from those kits would be good enough to place on a barrel and age? Or will it require additional steps?
Waiting for the final episode of Rex Month... where Rex rings the bell one too many times, and Daniel Hulks out and smashes Rex's phone.
That was what I was waiting for
Somm: 4 Mooch: 0
Hey guys, new to the channel(I actually found you from the suggested videos on the side, while watching PewDiePie's Japanese whiskey vlog) and I was wondering if there's any chance you could review(for those of us who will never know) this blended whiskey I saw on the t.v. show 'Billions' called Michter's Celebration(2016 Celebration Sour Mash), that comes with an interesting backstory about Willie Pratt, the man who did the blends for Michter's, who retired after doing this one. Supposedly, it's the final word(subjective opinion of course but highly agreed upon nonetheless) in blended whiskey. *Liked & Subscribed
Taking bets on Rex going for the Macallan M. I hope he does, because I'd like to see the poor(er) version.
StrangeGhost They've actually done it already! ruclips.net/video/ADAwicgfW8I/видео.html
Wow, in one of the few episodes I haven't either seen yet or committed to memory. Thanks!
I am interested in this blend, but haven’t ever seen the Belle Meade Sherry in my area. If i omit that, will I still be 80%+?
All hail King Daniel! #teambiscuit
Try to find any other sherry finish bourbon, and you should be fine
I love that these were all filmed one after the other. Rex must be trashed by the end of this 'week' hahah
"have you served me well?" haha
@Whiskey Vault Any idea of percentages on the individual bourbons? Has anybody made this blend?
I blend my bourbon and scotches too
That's because you are a person of taste and discretion
Poor man's Pappy!
“Had me at hide from me” lmfao
So I officially cannot read/speak the word "People" without hearing/saying it like goddamn Rex does in these videos. Thanks for making me sound like I'm have mini-Aneurysms mid-sentence, ya jerk.
Daniel getting a blend closer to a bourbon than a scotch is like Tom Brady suddenly kicking ass Futbol instead of Football lol
Do a military special show. Onefor the soldiers
I remember when watching Ralfy, when he tasted a whisky he could taste things from things like Licorice, Herbal Honey, Citrus teas, Lime-Stone, Shoe-leather Polish.
Some of these things I can understand, but shoe leather polish?
I can't say I've ever tried or had the desire to try shoe leather polish before! It now makes me wonder if Ralfy is sitting in his house licking old leather sofas and shoes to achieve a deeper understanding of whisky.
I think some of those notes are the sensation you get from being around it. Maybe the way the smell ... tastes? Maybe after a sip he has the same sensation as being in a room full of expensive leather shoes. Kind of like how Daniel talks about Lagavulin and mint. There's no mint in there. It is that cool feeling after having something minty.
What gets me is when people talk about notes in coffees. I love black coffee and drink as much as I can get my hands on. But I drink it hot. It's pretty hard to get subtle hints and notes from such a warm liquid (or cold for for doing drinks on rocks). Usually I don't get subtle hints. I get in your face flavors with coffee. SOMETIMES something sneaks out one day. But the very next day brewing the exact same way it may be gone. Whiskies seem to be far more consistent with their notes. At least to me.
I can relate as right now I'm drinking a cup of half-caf (we only had half a cup of regular left) coffee that went cold. It's watery and inconsistent.
I am definitely betting that Ralfy is just getting the smell-taste of something, but just saying "Oh yeah, tastes like old boot leather" just makes me think that he has actually had old boot leather before when he says it so matter-of-factly
I mean how do you know something tastes earthy? You don't take a pile of dirt in your mouth.
That's very presumptuous of you Entenkommando, lol
wine sommeliers actually do taste dirt in different regions to know what it tastes like (according to that doc on netflix). yeah, kinda crazy, but people do it
