Roy Smeck said to several people here that he never understood why Cliff was so well-regarded as he and Marvin were much better technically. The answer is that Cliff is a great personality who connected directly with his listener. Harder for Roy to do that as an instrumentalist - and though Johnny was great, better as you say, he didn't have that same big personality that Cliff had. Gosh- sorry to gas on and on...
