- Traditional desktop 3D printers use melted plastic as their build material, but Mcor's printers layer sheets of paper on top of each other to create their models. We check out the new Mcor Arke, a printer that cuts from a large spool of paper, glues those sheets together, and then prints color on them to turn digital files into large paper models!

I love how he “tasked his engineers to develop a paper system which will never fail” and then goes on to explain this paper with holes in the edge...... the same I was running through my dot matrix printer 20 years ago!
He also said $9k and it's going for $23k
Speaking as someone who has used a dot matrix a time or two in their lives, they are far from foolproof.
just be glad this printer doesn't make that god awful screeching that the old dot matrix printers used to make.
@@AustinStanley1 Yeah, "never fail" is far from reality. I can still remember clearing jams from the dot matrix printer because it decided to eat my homework.
Also "off the shelf paper" is a bit misleading. I doubt you can go to your local Office Depot or on Amazon and just find shelves of this stuff for sale. It dosen't even look like the paper used in dot matrix printers, no folds. I don't know, maybe you can find it in the big industrial label/bill-of-lading printers?
@@mrmaigo I've also seen $18,800 and $6,000 quoted as the price. With the "consumables kit" going for ~$750.
And at 0:30 it looks like they are saying the machine is $6,000.
This is one of the most interesting 3D printers that I've seen, refreshing to see something that is more artistic than practical.
weirdly if it wasnt for the pricepoint, it was probably one of the most practical solutions to large scale 3d printing with speed.

LOL yeah, that was a dumb example, but for more complex models it's pretty neat. Can't deny that. Paper pulp can be made out of a lot of materials other than wood, anything plant based, cellulose based will do. Think corn husks.
That scene of wood turned to paper then turned to wood again- to then make a toothpick is depicted in 'Bugs Bunny's Lunar Tunes' (December 02, 1994 VHS release, or about 6:06 mins in on Dailymotion). During Bugs trial, Marvin asserts that Earthlings create pollution, clutter up outer space, and portray space people as monsters. Universities that are primarily financed through the state, such as in Germany, have a smaller budget but also don't waste as much on aesthetics such as marble stairs. I'm pretty sure that 9k USD is still fairly affordable to a university if they decide that they need such a machine.

This is actually the most innovative 3D printing advancement i've seen in a long time. His point about treating the final product as a scaffold, which can be treated in any number of ways to produce a variety of final results is really interesting.

at least open the machine and let us buy a headset it's the Perfect use-case for core XY top-down, with a Sheet material feed omg.. ideal.
Giving them indefinite stable height, probably better everything. They step this box up to metre scale 500x500x300? and at 10 grand I'd eat them for 1t.
cos as an open rig, we can use and Edge in any material... ... it could print Laminated Aliminium, in full colour (yawn)
Just watched... sounds like the printer has a base layer of paper, cuts it as needed, applies glue, feeds just enough paper to cover the next layers area (to reduce waste), I assume it presses somehow at this point, applies ink, applies glue, ad nauseum until it is complete.
when u watch the whole vid waiting to see a demonstration and it never happens...

Anybody who's ever worked with a photocopies knows that paper jams are THE WORST.
Well that's why they use paper roll now: less likely to jam.

The paper and the roller system is from a 1978 dot matrix printer.
Fascinating, this is almost an automated version of the process I use to prototype enclosures.

Worked retail for a year, never seen it be more than a 10 second fix, and even then, running out of paper happens 10x more often than jams occur
Excellent interview. I can see this being extremely useful and a relatively cheap investment to prop makers in film/TV especially in remote filming locations.

i work in foam fabrication, and decades ago someone had a similar machine. would cut thin sheets of foam with water, then glue them together in layers. great technology. i imagine this company has a great perceved environmental profile. printer may be a bit more expensive and higher end, but papaer! you can get that anywhere!

If you want to have 3d printing with full, saturated colors like you dream of then you probably would have to look at "Polyjet" technology by a company named "Stratasys" with a printer named "connex3" or the other ones they make you need now apparently. There's been this yearly "TCT" 3D printing show in Birmingham again fro 26-28 september so maybe there's a new best in the field of 3d full color printing. An older alternative is the "3D Systems Zcorp 650 (Projet 660)" gypsum based full colour 3D printer but apparently print costs are high up to 100$ per print. And the post-processing is intensive. Both of these printers cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Aside from maintenance and print costs. So they aren't really a feasible option for most of the people looking into it. For multicolor 3D printing for individuals and hobbyists there are new options now. Last year Mcor released their paper based thus quite inexpensive to run "Arke" printer for 6500$. And now we have this PLA based " "XYZ da Vinci Color" printer for about 4200$. The quality of color and printing of both this "XYZ da Vinci Color" and the "Mcor Arke" is similar and leave a lot to be desired. Especially when compared to the (albeit very expensive) Polyjet and Gypsum 3D color printing solutions. This product again cuts the cost and improves the accessibility of full color 3D printing. But like you said. The quality is obviously still not where it needs to be. And those who adopt these products will be inevitably footing the bil of technologies in development. But there are also perks to doing that of course. I dream of the day we can get Polyjet quality full colour 3D prints from a desktop printer for low print cost. But that'll probably take a decade if not longer to happen. But I believe it can. It will likely take 2D printer industry giants like Canon, HP, Brother and associates probably to get there. Not too long ago 3D printing for individuals as a concept was alien and hardly imaginable. As were mobile phones. Surely we should be able to get there sooner or later. I think the printing industry giants are held back from 3D printing by the copyright and associated big business interests of their boards, shareholders,nig business. When you can't sell replacement parts or figurines to people anymore. When people just scan, share and 3D print them instead of paying their companies I guess they'll lose a lot of business. 3D printing is a very disruptive technology for many markets I reckon. That's why perhaps they wait. Otherwise it's really quite incomprehensible why major industry giants are letting all these small companies fill the void of 3D printing innovation and sales.
But that must be a lot of waste material. What happens to the rest of the paper?

so is that paper roll proprietary or can I get it at office max. I don't think I've seen anything like that since I use to tear the hole margins off at my dad's office in the 90s.
+graefx I don't know about the specific paper they use here, but I've worked with plotters that used a similar system. The rolls were a lot wider though.

they are standard punch rolls. But I bet they won't tell you that xx expect them to supply you everything.

Don't get me wrong I'm intrigued about the concept but I have to laugh at how he describes the paper feed system. It's not new or revolutionary it's a dot matrix printer. I printed my homework on that back in grade school in the 90s.

$9000 cuts paper and prints ink on paper layers and glues the paper stacks, can be resin coated for strength.
Almost, the resin can be used during the print for strength.

As cool as this looks, it seems like a massive waste of paper.
They waste compared with plastic is no factor. How much paper have you thrown into the bin this week in the office? Papier is dirt cheap for a reason. (And it is recyclable)

The roll didn't look like it has holes then the paper you see above it does. Is it punching its own holes as it goes?
Also... Is it printing on the bottom side too to color overhangs?
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?!?! How many stacks of paper did they use to print that shoe? How many trees did it take? I guarantee that those inks are not environmentally friendly!
Think about how much can be recycled though. Recycling one ton of copy/printer paper saves two tons of wood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_recycling#Rationale_for_recycling
Not to mention, if you had a printer like this that used standard sheets of paper (without the alignment holes) you could just take used paper before it's recycled to make your prints.

More environmentally friendly than plastic.
Leon not more friendly than PLA. The most common material for desktop printers. Its a bio polymer from stuff like like corn starch
@@Gardehesten Paper still decomposes faster.
There are many other factors than decomposition time. It's mostly a systemic question. If the material is biodegradable, it doesnt really matter as long as in the end it becomes dirt. I agree wood is a good example, If you take care of it, it will last you thousands of years, but if it's placed in a moist, fungus rich environment it decompose quickly. Important things to remember is first the time that tree takes to grow to size, secondly the environmental impact in the area of that tree. Wild animals losing their habitat, amount of trees cut in the same area, the tools used for cutting, the liters of diesel consumed by machinery etc. The extraction of the raw material and the chemical processes involved in bleaching, energy required in all processes combined, logistics... it goes on. Recycled paper on the other hand, is a very nice approach. If these guys can use a 75% recycled pulp for instance I will readjust my skeptisism. And we don't know the type of ink and glue used in the machine. Not the resin for rubberising or hardening of the model either. That type of process most likely contaminates the paper so much it can not be recycled.

It prints the image slice on the paper as it rolls through then it cuts each image slice out so the first image is the bottom, until you get to the last one which is the top. The separate slices may be heated or glued?

Paper is recyclable, biodegradable and renewable. Tons and tons of paper is recycled every day. There are regulations that required recycled paper be added to products both commercial and post consumer waste. Plastic OTOH is a much bigger mainly petroleum product of which only a small percent is recyclable and is not biodegradable nor renewable.
