    Great video. I used to get stressed out not doing enough in a day that what I planned. Usually when I take a day of work and want to do lots of things for my own personal projects. But honestly, I now set my daily goals so incredibly small. It's just to get me started and everything else is a bonus. For example, if I want to edit a YT video, I just say the objective is to get the files off the camera and imported into a premiere timeline. Then before I know it, 4 hours later and I've edited the whole thing. But I'd still be happy just getting the files off the camera and imported to premiere.

      Ah, setting tiny goals is a reeeally great idea. I guess, "read just ONE page of the book," would work, but then, once I'm in it, I'll start getting inspired and keep going! (Or not and then I'll know it wasn't meant to be!)

      @@morganeua That's it! I learned this idea when writing. When you finish for the day, start the next sentence but leave it incomplete. So when you look at it next you find it easy to just complete that sentence, and it starts to put you into the flow. I do it with the app I'm building all the time. Works like a charm.

    Omg the built up expectations for daily productivity - I am so guilty of that! Have never heard anyone on academic/productivity youtube bring that up (or even irl lol why do we not talk about this stuff??). I really needed that validation esp today as I lie here taking a break from my philosophy reading after a day of feeling unwell, and feeling guilty for feeling unwell.

    I Working alone is hard! You should consider joining The Accepted Society. It’s an amazing group of academics who virtually work together twice a day during the week (you can join and leave at any time during one of the workshops). It’s helped me with my loneliness SO MUCH and it’s such a supportive community.

    💕 a day in the life if Morgan! Surprisingly, you day is an awful lot like a day in the life of a professor on sabbatical, which is me! You hit the nail on the head about the flexibility of time. It is a blessing and curse at the same time. I’ve definitely wasted many days and had to learn to be more disciplined.
    Also, I’m like you about writing in the morning. I’ve learned to save tasks like lesson planning, creating slides for class and doing email to the afternoon. Those tasks don’t take as much mental concentration or mental energy so I try to never do them before 2PM. Sometimes, I have to check email but I only respond to true emergencies earlier and flag the rest for later. This has helped me make better use of my 3-5 PM lull.
    Great filming!

    It's such a delight just to be with you, albeit via video! Re: PhD, you gather and assimilate existing knowledge about the topic, see commonalities, contradictions, you synthesize all of that.....so how and at what point does a new insight emerge?

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  2 года назад +2

      ❤️ Two answers: 1) Finding a connection or contradiction that hasn't been found before IS a new insight! 2) Throughout that process new insights are forming. If a line of thought grabs my interest or seems potentially fruitful, I'll stop reading and start writing to see what emerges!

    Hi, Morgan! Your wall on 7:48 says "стена", and that means "wall" in Russian (I presume you know this already). Surprised to see that ;)
    Wanted to thank you for your video on Obsidian and Zettelkasten, it was super helpful! Although this method is way more time-consuming - it takes me sooo looong to transform what I read into a consistent note - I now like it more than my previous note-taking routine in Notion.

But you put me onto the obsidian groove and that was a huge boon. Sometimes I startat 3am others I start at 6am but the key for me is planning. Thanks.

      Love the idea of an anti-doctoral program! Or maybe an "undoctoral" or "nondoctoral" would be more accurate terms? The "deed" is the most important part! You will learn a lot in that process even without having the institution backing it!
