Yeah exactly! I like feeling lean and not inflammed. I'm trying to teach my kids this. It's hard tho because I also don't want them to develop an eating disorder. They're on the younger side (8 & 6) but it's kinda cool to hear them read ingredients while we're out shopping and discuss between each other what's good and bad
Not crazy at all to practitioners. Several weeks after first beginning IF, I asked myself a question that completely shifted my paradigm on hunger. The question? "What if these 'hunger pangs' I'm having right now are actually what it feels like when my body is healing itself?" This was before I ever knew anything about ghrelin. Ever since that moment, I lean into the feeling of hunger, even feeling good about it. Thanks for confirming my perspective!
Yeah, same here. I used to get headaches if I didn't eat at a given time. IF helped me to see that I was actually dehydrated and needed more water. It has helped tremendously!
People are taught from early age to eat all the time even when not hungry and to reward ourself with sugar. Parents are literally obsessed with jamming food in their kids mouth.
i had rolls on rolls and they still joke to this day, they don’t rlly understand that it’s my biggest problem. i feel like the way i was over fed and heavily rewarded by sweets could mess up my body for a turn around, been trying to
I've always noticed that I don't feel hungry immediately after working out and generally on my workout days. I am definitely going to try walking when I am hungry at night or push ups. Love this vid!
I been IF for 2 months and I'm working towards the 72h water fast and maybe further in time. Currently doing 48h once a month along with the OMAD IF method. I learned having a "feeding window" works wonders for me. My mindset is my ancestors were lucky to eat daily meanwhile currently society pigs out do to ease of access. So thinking like a hunter gatherer an show they didn't always eat often is helping me control my food intake.
I was really mentally ill when I was younger and didn't eat, you stop feeling hungry completly when under weight (but really sleepy and dizzy) , it took me 6 months to be able to eat properly again. 10 years later I need to loose 13 pounds and i thought it would be easy but the hunger feels like hell!
Thanks for this! As someone with a history of eating disorder, I started the carnivore way not only for the therapeutic benefits but also to avoid ever feeling hungry. Now I feel a different type of hunger, which I seem to be able to manage better. when I feel hunger, I tend to embrace it and let the feeling pass without panicking.
Hey like veganism, the carnivore diet doesn’t work, we have the ability to eat fruit and vegetables for a reason. Please don’t do this diet, pirates got scurvy cause they didn’t eat any fruits either
Well this is going to take my fast up a j notch. I was already trying distract myself from eating by doing a small workout so I guess I’m still on the right track but now I’m in the know. Thanks Thomas!
This is absolutely Fantastic explanation i didn't know why i was so hungry after 2 spinning classes back to back. I did eat healthy and so next day i was in recovery mode (A.M) while so Hungry so now my body can just utilize my Fat cells. Next time i feel that hungry I will drink a Black coffee then light workout. I really appreciate Very Good explanation. God bless brother. I often train on an empty stomach also (then a protein shake) so apparently Hungry is an indication of burning Fat.
👍 Cardio is the way I beat hunger while fasting. I'm doing two 24-hour+ fasts per week now, separated by three resistance training sessions, fasted (one is just an overnight fast) and four high-protein very-low-carb feasting days (doesn't sound like the math works, but it does-I usually do 48 hours+ on the weekend.)
My opinion, there are a few things to correct: Ghrelin mechanism is turned on and off by the stomach not the cells🙃 Glucagon is releasing the glucose from liver glycogen not fats from adypocites...😌 You feel more alert not from the glucose to the brain but more from adrenal reaction to lack of nutrients But the hair looks good tho..😁

This time around I finally hear ya on the IF alternate day. I guess it’s true you really have to learn from our mistakes and our minds play tricks on us. 😆 ty TD!
Now I finally know why I’m always so hungry at night and so full in the morning! I typically don’t eat after 5pm so I was always sooo confused abt that 😂
I remember the Asian dude from 6-minute abs (if I remember the title correctly) always said "hunger/tummy rumbling just means little guys are building up your abs in there." Does anyone remember that channel lol
I've been on a diet for about three months now, and for the past week I've just been eating one meal a day but today I've really felt hungry. So I guess this video explains what going on
Did a three day fast. Focused hard. No cheating. Lost 8 pounds. Water weight I am sure. Switched to IF + Keto. Lost 1 pound day 1, lost 1 pound day 2. On day three tightened window to 2:00-6:30. Ate salads with steak x 2. Blood sugar up. Gained a pound. Day 4 stayed at a 5 hour window-ish. Still salads with meat and cheese. Blood sugar up again. Gained another pound. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Will keep plugging away as best I know so far. Oh yes, forgot to add that I am having hunger pangs several times every day. Cravings dropped after second day of prolonged fasting.
It’s extremely hard being hungry when you’re a software engineer. I actually don’t feel hungry most of the time. But I have a rule in my life, that is I don’t eat after 6pm. Which sometimes result in hunger after 10pm. Especially if I ate my dinner a little too soft. Because I never eat after 6pm, that small dinners end up being not enough for my body. Although I’m not overweight or something, I’m actually a fit guy with a good amount of muscle mass, I still don’t want to eat after certain hours so that my doesn’t get unhealthy calories(eating at night is one of the worst things you can do to your body). The problem starts when I start coding at night times. If I’m hungry, it literally effects my performance. Which is frustrating, but I’m not willing to take risk of being unhealthy so that I can code at nights better. I think I should be more focused during the day so I can just lay into my bed in the nights.
Please do take this advice with a grain of salt (I don’t see any sources listed or references to medical literature). It’s good to tolerate a little bit of hunger and discern between hunger and cravings, but don’t let yourself get weak and unwell. It is ok to listen to your body when you feel you need to eat. And especially do not be overly critical of yourself when you eat-it’s proven that people are less critical of themselves are the most successful at weight loss.
There will be cravings for every expected meal. While hunger usually do not kick in until day 10 of fasting; this number could be anything between 10 and 40. That said day 2 of a fast will have some similar feelings.
Or the other way round, you do something and you just eat to make your brain not bored by doing just one thing. I did that a lot when studying at university (faculty of architecture), when sitting behind desk and designing stuff.
“Hunger” can also be thirst and it can also be a signal from your brain that you are deficient in certain vitamins or minerals. Exercising isn’t always a solution…
Yes! I first learned this years ago after reading "Your Body's Many Cries For Water" by Dr. Batmanghelidj, M.D. My family makes fun of me because I'm known for saying, "Oh, (X) is wrong with you? Drink some water." At least they're getting it. This is literally one of the easiest and least expensive actions we can take to care for ourselves. ruclips.net/video/oCfDzPs8tvA/видео.html
@@davidledoux1736 drinking water is always my first attempt at satiation! If that doesn’t work then I try seeing if I missed some micros in my diet. Exercising just seems like a mask or facade to cover up the problem because you’re forcing endorphins on yourself.
@@strongtowerman9661 I don’t even keep track but yeah too much water will poison you. I’m always running low on water due to fasting, exercise and diuretics so whatever I drink might not be suitable for you. At least eight 16oz glasses of water a day should be good for an average, not an extreme like me where I might drink twice that during the course of a day. I start the morning with two glasses right after a short warmup. The one thing I do is just have a glass of water whenever I feel slightly parched, that’s my signal to drink up. Or after activities, especially ones that dehydrate you or raise your blood pressure. Like showering and hot tubbing for instance, a glass before and a glass after. I don’t focus on maintaining a certain number of glasses, just listen to your body and it’ll give you the cues.
I no longer know what is hunger and what is just a craving! I mean, if you're keto and fasting and no longer feel hungry, when do you actually need to eat?! Hunger and cravings are all in your head, we can all still function providing we have water and electrolytes, so a what point do you eat? What if you've left it too long? What if, when you finally do eat, you can't stop? We are all wired to eat as much as possible as quickly as possible as often as possible! Fasting just delays the inevitable and when you do binge you will have to fast all over again!
You will stop eating after breaking a fast because your stomach has shrunk considerably. Yeah- sometimes I wonder about if I should eat too at the end of a fast if I’m not hungry- But like he said, if you don’t the body could start to consume its own muscle/protein. I’m still relatively new to this and still learning. ✌️
Great! Great explanation Thomas! I've got it! I've been motivated to resist hungry and who knows do push-ups! Haha this is gonna be be a paradox but I'm going to follow this great tips! Thanks prof!!!
I have a question: I am moving from 24 hour fasts to 36 hours and would like to get to 48 and 72 eventually. I find that if I drink my concoction of water, Himalayan salt, cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice that I can extend my fasting period. I drink water only for the greater part of the day but I have a glass of this concoction around 3:00 pm and sail through dinner. Do you think I am breaking my fast?
I've been "hungry" (feeling a need for some nutrients or at least thinking that is what it was), "hungry" (cravings), "hungry" (stomach growls and rumbles galore), hungry (feeling primarily in the throat, but also feeling very awakened in my entire body and brain at the same time), and actually starving (pregnant, unable to eat, losing bone to the baby). I can tell you they all feel vastly different and only actual hunger is pleasant and t is also the only one that came after a lot of weight loss of purely fat.
i'm having a hard time uderstanding this. i do IF and i eat my first meal at 1 pm. start working out at 3pm-4pm. i feel hangry 2/3 hours after that and wanting to eat a big portion of meal. is that bad? should i just eat small portion and do some walking instead?
I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and I do fasting because it makes me feel better but I'm torn between if I should eat when I'm hungry or just stick to my two meals a day.
Did a 20 hour fast today and the hunger kicked in roughly 13 hours in but shortly after dissipated. Unfortunately I was not able to capitalize on it and get a workout in
The question is what to do when you haven't eaten for a while and you're going for a run, but you feel lightheaded, weak and dizzy, what do you do then? Eat?
Drink water with added electrolyte, especially salt, potassium, & magnesium, or make a bone broth with butter & sea salt. It can help cut the hunger, replace you electrolytes & it doesn't knock you out of ketosis:) Sometimes I add green onions.
What joy kelly said... Try getting a good electrolyte mix (I use key nutrients) and adding it to your water....(the pink lemonade one is really good👌)- Keto will deplete your electrolytes fast and dehydrate you quickly.
Just be careful though, because you could possibly get too much zinc and magnesium if you’re drinking a lot of the mix- Especially if you’re taking a multi vitamin or other supplements.... You don’t want too much zinc or magnesium- Potassium, you need like 4000+ mg A day, so you should be ok.... Just read your labels and exercise good judgment pun intended 😄
Hi Thomas. Thoughtful film. Craig the I did get the NMN. Nerdy guy here cutting weight on Copocollo everyday. See you tomorrow. What you been up to? How's everyone.
Would love a video on why I crave fat once fat adapted. I do better with keeping fats low in beginning of day but usually around 4pm I crave something sweet like a fat bar. It’s hard to resist….🤪
You think that’s bad, I haven’t ate crappy food in ages. Always focusing on the gym and eating clean… but 24 hours a day, 7 days a week I’m always craving the unhealthiest foods. I’m talking McDonald’s double quarter pounders, French fries, ice cream, cake, pastries, pasta, friend junk and chocolate candies. The crappier the better. It’s been almost a year since I ate anything remotely like that and I crave it every second.
TLDR: I started Keto August 16th at 193.2 lbs. 4 weeks in, I was at 183.2 lbs. This week is the first week I haven't experienced weight loss and my ketones are down. Should I be worried? Long version: I keep my net carbs under 25g a day, I consume around 1800 calories/day. I workout 6 times a week (4 strength, 2 cardio). I do IF most days of the week. My ketones used to be in the 3-4 mmol range, with glucose being in the 60s before breaking my fast. Suddenly, my glucose levels are up in the 70s/80s without consuming anything, ketones are down to 1.5-2 mmol range during the same time. No changes to diet, sleep, or exercise. I used to not get very hungry between meals. Now I'm suddenly hungry between meals.
I’m not an expert as I don’t practice keto, I just do IF- but my understanding is that your experience is typical. If you are testing ketone levels using strips, know that they are really only helpful for beginners. After a period of time your body adjusts and the ketones don’t spill into your urine anymore. This may actually be a sign that you are progressing well. I think I may have read that ketones can then be measured using a meter that tests blood. As for why your weight loss has stalled, I can’t say. Perhaps give it time or try switching things up a bit with varying IF schedules. The body wants to maintain weight so it will adapt to ones regimen over time.
When I eat regularly I get absolutely ravenous when I'm perceiving hunger: my hands shake, i get enraged and i get light headed. I've noticed that when I implement fasting, its not nearly as bad. I know that the sensations I feel are real but, could they be a response to blood sugar spikes rather than actual hunger?. I am for sure going to try the green tea and the activity for the hunger.
just for perspective I'm dancer so I work out 2-3 times a day: gym work out in the the morning and then I for sure do 1 dance practice either before or after the gym. I try to do a 2nd before dinner most days. I'm trying to lose some fat but my body is fighting me tooth and nail for the last 10-15 lbs.
I feel so much better knowing that I don't have to eat just because I feel hungry. But i do hate that feeling; it's like having a stomach ache. Can you do a video on coping with the feeling? Also, is it wrong to have, like, 2 crackers when I'm feeling really hungry? OR will my food cravings go away after I get used to being hungry?

Or after activities, especially ones that dehydrate you or raise your blood pressure. Like showering and hot tubbing for instance, a glass before and a glass after. I don’t focus on maintaining a certain number of glasses, just listen to your body and it’ll give you the cues.
Great video. Felt hungry, went out to do 10 hill sprints!
Yeah- sometimes I wonder about if I should eat too at the end of a fast if I’m not hungry-
But like he said, if you don’t the body could start to consume its own muscle/protein.
I’m still relatively new to this and still learning.

Great quote, perfect!
Love how you explained this, love your videos and info
thanks for putting those things in perspective
I needed to hear and apply that. Thank you 🤙🏾
Great! Great explanation Thomas! I've got it! I've been motivated to resist hungry and who knows do push-ups! Haha this is gonna be be a paradox but I'm going to follow this great tips! Thanks prof!!!
Keep it up!
You are so Right. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Is there any book explaining this?😊
Yep. I feel better when I’m a bit hungry.
i'm having a hard time uderstanding this. i do IF and i eat my first meal at 1 pm. start working out at 3pm-4pm. i feel hangry 2/3 hours after that and wanting to eat a big portion of meal. is that bad? should i just eat small portion and do some walking instead?
I’m hungry and have never been happier if it’s kicking in my metabolism that is sleeping from menopause
Great video!
0:50 Bro why'd you have to give it a visual too I'm dying here
I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and I do fasting because it makes me feel better but I'm torn between if I should eat when I'm hungry or just stick to my two meals a day.
Hopefully everything went well for you!
this video while it is useful, i feel like its gonna encourage ppl to starve themselves since ‘hunger= fat loss’. Be cautious guys
YES! 👍
Did a 20 hour fast today and the hunger kicked in roughly 13 hours in but shortly after dissipated. Unfortunately I was not able to capitalize on it and get a workout in
I don't feel hungry at all on keto. I was counting calories to make sure I ate *enough*
The question is what to do when you haven't eaten for a while and you're going for a run, but you feel lightheaded, weak and dizzy, what do you do then? Eat?
Drink water with added electrolyte, especially salt, potassium, & magnesium, or make a bone broth with butter & sea salt. It can help cut the hunger, replace you electrolytes & it doesn't knock you out of ketosis:)
Sometimes I add green onions.
What joy kelly said...
Try getting a good electrolyte mix
(I use key nutrients) and adding it to your water....(the pink lemonade one is really good👌)-
Keto will deplete your electrolytes fast and dehydrate you quickly.
@@SBecktacular , @joykelly, thank you. I've tried it and it works 💪. Blessings 🙌
Just be careful though, because you could possibly get too much zinc and magnesium if you’re drinking a lot of the mix-
Especially if you’re taking a multi vitamin or other supplements....
You don’t want too much zinc or magnesium-
Potassium, you need like 4000+ mg
A day, so you should be ok....
Just read your labels and exercise good judgment pun intended 😄
Hi Thomas. Thoughtful film.
Craig the I did get the NMN. Nerdy guy here cutting weight on Copocollo everyday.
See you tomorrow. What you been up to? How's everyone.
So if I don’t eat I get that foggy weak feeling but I don’t want to get to that point so what do I do?
This is why I practice alternate day Fasting
I am trying to lose weight and I heard it starts in the head the rest will follow so I am doing research, why not right?
Do a longer IF.
More great information. 👍
I can only watch you after i have eaten, Thomas. Lol. Sometimes you make me stress eat if im watching you as im eating. Heheheh….. 🧡
What about when ur stomach makes the brrrrr sound xd
Embrace the hunger 🤍
What if i cannot go for a run when hungry ? (I am work during that time)
When I eat regularly I get absolutely ravenous when I'm perceiving hunger: my hands shake, i get enraged and i get light headed.
A few crackers isnt gona do much of anything im sure its fine
2 crackers ain’t gun do shyt, lol. Have the 2 crackers.
Verry interesting 👍
Just when I am starting to feel not hungry for long durations 🤣😛
