@@Andrea-mp1jw Two thousand men, and fifty thousand tons of steel, set the course for the Atlantic with the Allies on their heel Firepower, firefight Battle Stations, keep the targets steady in sight!
For those in the comment section bickering about Bismarck's status as the world's largest battleship: When she was sunk, in May 1941, she WAS the largest and most powerful operational battleship in the world. Some others had a greater displacement, larger guns, or longer physical dimensions, but none exceeded her in more than any single category and she was far and away the most generally capable battleship design in service in 1941. Yamato and Musashi would obviously take all of Bismarck's titles away from her, but neither had yet been completed in May 1941, despite Yamato having been launched several months earlier. British and American ships exceeding her size and power would come along as well, but not for several years. Tirpitz lived long enough to be outclassed. Bismarck didn't.
Are we just not gonna talk about how this series is WORLD CLASS at storytelling?? How can a youtube documentary make me so hyped for what i know is coming?

howard baxter Only because Iowa was never used for her intended purpose (which was surface action against enemy capital ships that may attempt to attack American carriers). Iowa sank only one ship during her entire career, a mere training cruiser, and even than that ship had to be spared from aircraft carriers just so Iowa’s crew could get some experience. That’s a pathetic combat record for a ship specifically built to kill other capital ships. As with the Yamato-class, Iowa was obsolete even before being launched due to the rise of airpower, and despite being the most advanced of the end-generation battleships, she proved to be a colossal waste of resources that shouldn’t even have been built in the first place. Surviving a war when you never actually did your job isn’t really impressive.
If only the British had known that the Hood was a weak tier 7 BB, who's primary trick is OP anti-air rockets, and that Bismark was a battle tested Tier 8, with 10.6 km secondaries and turtle-back armor. Hindsight is 20/20. :)
They also left open a bulkhead safety door in the ammo bay after rushing to battle-station positions - this led to its sinking. A tv-doc showed this in 2016.
The Hood was a Battlecruiser and while its belt armour was increased to an adequate level when it was still on the construction yard following Jutland (1916) by ww2 the Hood was pretty much outdated and thanks to here thin deck armour was extremely vulnerable to plunging fire that was extremely rare in ww1 but thanks to improvement in ship artillery and fire control ranging became a real serious threat to naval warships.

@@ghostarmy1106 Yamato entered service with the Imperial Japanese navy in December 1941, and was in construction well before that, so it was definitely a thing.
The Internet is saying the Yamato's sister ship "Musashi" was the largest ship ever built, just barely squeaking past it's sister. But I think we're calling the Bismarck the "largest" for this series due to it being, at the time, the largest battleship on Earth.
Musashi and Yamato were a bit different. Yamato was built as a gunboat while Musashi, build as a flagship, had 2 less secondary turrets to accommodate her more extensive command and control facilities.
Even then it would be wrong, as Bismarcks sister ship Tirpitz also had been commissioned several months by the time Bismarck was sunk and it was the same size bulk wise, but a bit heavier. If we go by ships launched and undergoing fitting and sea trials, then both Yamato and Musashi would qualify, as they had both been launched in 1940, though it would take until December 1941 until Yamato finished fitting and sea trials and until the beginning of 1942 for Musashi to complete this stage and be commissioned. Anyway, the largest commissioned battleship at the time of Bismarcks sinking was its sister ship, the Tirpitz, not by much, but it was.
Giving Extra History the benefit of the doubt, the Bismarck was the largest warship in the world in early 1941, because the Yamato wasn´t completed yet (it would be comissioned in late 1941) Although if we get picky, we can say by the stage reached by Yamato´s construction in early 1941 it already surpassed the Bismarck, being so heavy.
As soon as I saw this video I started singing Johnny Horton's famous song: In May of nineteen forty-one the war had just begun The Germans had the biggest ship, they had the biggest guns The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea On her deck were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship, the Hood And every British seaman, he knew and understood They had to sink the Bismarck, the terror of the sea Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down The Hood found the Bismarck on that fatal day The Bismarck started firin' fifteen miles away "We gotta sink the Bismarck" was the battle sound But when the smoke had cleared away, the mighty Hood went down For six long days and weary nights they tried to find her trail Churchill told the people "put every ship a-sail 'Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea" We'll find that German battleship that's makin' such a fuss We gotta sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the mornin' sun Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run The admiral of the British fleet said "turn those bows around We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down" The British guns were aimed and the shells were comin' fast The first shell hit the Bismarck, they knew she couldn't last That mighty German battleship is just a memory "Sink the Bismarck" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas We found that German battleship been makin' such a fuss We had to sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us We hit the deck a-runnin' and we spun those guns around Yeah, we found the mighty Bismarck and prepared to cut her down We found that German battleship been makin' such a fuss We had to sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us We hit the deck a-runnin' and we spun those guns around We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down
The thing is the opening verse was wrong. Hood was longer than Bismarck, the Nelson Class had 16 inch guns, making them have the biggest guns (Hood had the same calibre guns) and when she was built, Hood was faster, but when she started to undergo modernisation that speed did decrease. So the irony is that Hood actually either matched or beat Bismarck in those aspects as sung in the opening verse. The tragedy of the Hood however was that the RN knew that she lacked armour, they knew her weaknesses and had drawn plans that predicted the kind of shot that sank her. They knew exactly how she would meet her fate and they knew how it could be avoided and they planned modernisations that would have increased her armour all over, making it comparative to Renown and the Queen Elizabeth Class. However her modernisations had kept being delayed and were pushed back to 1942, why? Because the RN felt that it served them far better to keep her doing stupid tours of the world and push her beyond her limits, which meant that she was in a poor state by the time she went to face the Bismarck (something that should have never have happened as Battlecruisers weren't designed to square off against Battleships, this was part of their design and a lesson that was then hard learned at Jutland) and they paid the price because someone high up in the RN was an incompetent.
In May of nineteen forty-one the war had just begun The Germans had the biggest ship, they had the biggest guns The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea On her deck were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship, the Hood And every British seaman, he knew and understood They had to sink the Bismarck, the terror of the sea Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down The Hood found the Bismarck on that fatal day The Bismarck started firin' fifteen miles away "We gotta sink the Bismarck" was the battle sound But when the smoke had cleared away, the mighty Hood went down For six long days and weary nights they tried to find her trail Churchill told the people "put every ship a-sail 'Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea" We'll find that German battleship that's makin' such a fuss We gotta sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the mornin' sun Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run The admiral of the British fleet said "turn those bows around We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down" The British guns were aimed and the shells were comin' fast The first shell hit the Bismarck, they knew she couldn't last That mighty German battleship is just a memory "Sink the Bismarck" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas We found that German battleship been makin' such a fuss We had to sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us We hit the deck a-runnin' and we spun those guns around Yeah, we found the mighty Bismarck and prepared to cut her down We found that German battleship been makin' such a fuss We had to sink the Bismarck 'cause the world depends on us We hit the deck a-runnin' and we spun those guns around We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down

Here's something for the Lies episode: ships are usually referred to as feminine using 'she' or 'her', but the Bismarck was one of the only ships referred to by Germans as masculine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was Captain Lindemann who referred to the ship as a 'he' when it was first set on water in 1936.
My family is from the very north of Iceland, my grandfather and some of my family that has now passed saw the hood explosion across the horizon it was that large.
ThJoKi Spoilers? The wars been over for (stops to check watch) 72+ years now, 77 since we sunk the bastard. I mean, spoiler alerts have expiration dates.
I bet everybody saw the title and went OH MY GOD THEY FINALLY MADE A BISMARCK SERIES, and then was mightily shocked by the actually content of the episode. Still great stuff, though.
Stoptherock they also have the advantage of their sponsored content not feeling shoehorned in. Whenever a gaming channel starts talking about skillshare or a comedy channel mentions audible, it feels tacked on and makes me dislike the product a bit because of it. This isn’t just a “Buy the way, play WoWarships” tacked onto the end of an unrelated video, but an entire series on a very interesting topic sponsored by a related product. I hope we see a lot more in the way of sponsorships from companies based around history, they’ve already brought us the Bismarck Hunt, Hiawatha, and Berlin Airlift episodes, so I can’t wait for what comes next.
Gethin Topps That is length, but not size. Ships are measured in weight. How much armor, the size of her guns, and her propellers. The Bismarck was the largest (until Yamato and her sister came)
Hood and Prince of Wales were battlecruisers, not battleships, a distinction that will be made disastrously important very soon. They may have been longer, but they were lighter. Faster, certainly, but by no means in Bismarks league in armor or sheer mass. And the Yamato hadn't even had it's keel laid yet.
I'm not sure if the Yamato was the biggest ever, but it was bigger than the Bismark, it was about 10 meters longer, 3 meters larger and weighted about 20,000 metrics tons more at full load (hat's 27-30 feet longer, 9-10 feet larger and 44,000 imperial tons more for you).
Tiax Anderson 'laid down,' is for when construction starts. launch is when construction ends and vessel leaves construction dock. comission is when the vessel enters active service.
I really love maritime wars. The Yamato, Bismark, Iowa and others are really fascinating and I hope one day to make a ship just as prestigious as them.
For anyone wondering, RAF stands for Royal Air Force, HMS stands for His Majesty’s Ship or Her Majesty’s Ship (depending on the gender of the British monarch)
In may of 1941, the war had just begun. The Germans had the biggest ship, that had the biggest guns. The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea. On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees. Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship, the Hood. And every British seaman he knew and understood. They had to sink the Bismarck, the terror of the sea. Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The Hood found the Bismarck and on that fatal day. The Bismarck started firing fifteen miles away. We gotta sink the Bismarck was the battle sound. But when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down. For six long days and weary nights, they tried to find her trail. Churchill told the people "put every ship to sail." Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be. We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea. We'll find the German battleship that's makin' such a fuss. We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. Yeah hit the decks a runnin', boys and spin those guns around. When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down. The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the morning sun. Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run. The Admiral of the British fleet said turn those bows around. We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down. The British guns were aimed and the shells were coming fast. The first shell hit the Bismarck they knew she couldn't last. That mighty German battleship is just a memory. "Sink the Bismarck" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas. We found the German battleship t'was makin' such a fuss. We had to sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us. We hit the deck a runnin' and we and spun those guns around, yeah. We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down. We found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down.
I feel like the people living through the middle part of the 20th century must have been going through strange times. Potentially living through two world wars, seeing Empires fall and the rise of America and Russia. Seeing the space race, nuclear weapons, and so much more during your lifetime must've been wild. I wonder what'll happen in my lifetime.

For those in the comment section bickering about Bismarck's status as the world's largest battleship:
When she was sunk, in May 1941, she WAS the largest and most powerful operational battleship in the world.
Thank you.=)

Hell even USS Iowa is larger.
Bk Jeong ^ except it didn’t sink. No American ship larger than the Bismarck was ever destroyed during the war.
Yamoto wasn’t built yet, so it was largest to be sunk at that time.
howard baxter
Only because Iowa was never used for her intended purpose (which was surface action against enemy capital ships that may attempt to attack American carriers).

You know Hood was a Battle Cruiser not a Battleship?
They also left open a bulkhead safety door in the ammo bay after rushing to battle-station positions - this led to its sinking. A tv-doc showed this in 2016.
The Hood was a Battlecruiser and while its belt armour was increased to an adequate level when it was still on the construction yard following Jutland (1916) by ww2 the Hood was pretty much outdated and thanks to here thin deck armour was extremely vulnerable to plunging fire that was extremely rare in ww1 but thanks to improvement in ship artillery and fire control ranging became a real serious threat to naval warships.

Yamato entered service with the Imperial Japanese navy in December 1941, and was in construction well before that, so it was definitely a thing.
Unless the Yamamoto can tune travel then yes, she is a joke.
I don't want to be that ship but Yamato wasn't completed until after I sank so yes I am the largest ship
@@Panzer-3385XbS are those containing you taking good care of you?
Cool profile pic
Still nope, the largest battleship at the time would still be the Yamato. Bismark sank in May 1941 and Yamato was launched in August 1940.
Honestly, the "Hunting the Bismarck" Series keep me on edge! SO GOOD!

My 7th grade history teacher played this song all the time. It's exactly what I thought of too.
My guess it will be the song in the end of this series
The Bismark was the fastest ship that ever sailed the seas
On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees
Here's the song, for those who want to hear it: /watch?v=KecIdlEAKhU

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was Captain Lindemann who referred to the ship as a 'he' when it was first set on water in 1936.

You rarely see a sponsored video with such likes/dislikes rate, the Extra Credits team know how to do proper paid content. Keep it up!
If you guys know of the lenghts of any other ships. Add it here in the replies.
All I was doing was pointing out the lenghts, but I appreciate your input.

Um i thought the yamato was the biggest battle ship on earth.....
Angel Soldier So did I, and yes it is. At least as far as my knowledge of history goes.
It was constructed after this point in history.
Tiax Anderson 'laid down,' is for when construction starts. launch is when construction ends and vessel leaves construction dock. comission is when the vessel enters active service.
true, but that one was launched a year later, hence when it was launched it was the largest one.
