  • This is Les Fruitbat Carter and Jim Bob Morrison.... otherwise known as Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine playing Surfin USM - at their Brixton Academy 1991 gig. It also features the greatest kick arse introduction in the world thanks to Jon "You Fat Bastard" Beast. And the traditional "You Fat Bastard" chant from the crowd. This is official (non mobile phone their weren't any then, or if they were they were too big and incapable of taking footage) footage of the gruesome twosome in their heyday.
Starting off as Jamie Wednesday... they made their name with a distinctive style of power pop, fusing samples, sequenced basses and drum machines with rock 'n' roll guitars and off-beat wordplay-loaded lyrics. They reached the height of their fame in 1991 and 92. Over the following years the band took on new members, topping out as a six-piece, but struggled to regain their earlier popularity. They initially split up in 1998 after releasing seven albums.
They have come together for one off gigs, the last being sell out gigs in London in November 2009, titled "The Drum Machine Years". Over the course of two nights the band played their first four albums in their entirety, plus encores.
Now the USMs are back for two concerts in November, 2011 at Brixton and Manchester, known as Norf and Sarf 2011. It'll be RUBBISH!

I'm 55 now and I wish I'd kept all my t shirts from this time. Saw a young man with his girl a couple of weeks ago with a 30 something t shirt. Respect young man, excellent taste.

For a manager of a band he was quite a performer, I got into Carter USM very late in the day around 1996-7 and I was impressed by their album music. RIP.

Saw them twice, once in Manchester, smuggled at 15 by my brother and sister who were both at uni there and a year later in Bristo, again smuggled in the middle of a crowd of my sisters friends. I have never been in such an electric atmosphere at a gig. The Jon Beast intro was something else, he was a legend. Sufing USM was an opener like no other and he was part of that.

At last you have a comment. I saw then 2 to 3 times at least in past, and saw them in part , at least at the weekend. Brilliant

I saw them on that tour at uni. I remember buying a long sleeve "30 Something" t-shirt and thinking how many years it would be until I'd wear it and it would be true, Twenty two years later and i can't wear it anymore! Well, not for it to be true - I can still get into it because I'm well fit, innit (and it was far too big for me when I got it)...).
    Anyway, thank you for posting!
