While a vampire is far too powerful to put into the character’s hands as a playable race, dhampirs fit the power level just fine with all the style, black eyeliner, and edgy fangs you could want. Dhampirs have been stalking DnD for quite some time, sometimes as monsters, sometimes as playable characters, but finally with the release of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft we have the opportunity to play them in 5th edition. Grab your darkest and broodiest coat and a hunk of some very raw and bloody steak as we go through everything you need to know.

Hello, I believe that you or I have misread Dhampir. You can use the Bite and empower it at any time, no matter your HP. But you have advantage if your at half HP or lower.

    • @ConvictedHeart
      @ConvictedHeart Год назад +7

You have the right of it. It details how you can empower yourself, and then as a completely separate sentence adds, "While you are missing half of or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite."
this would probably be a question for a DM but I think lizardfolk already have a similar bite mechanic? *checks*
YEP! "Hungry Jaws. In battle, you can throw yourself into a vicious feeding frenzy. As a bonus action, you can make a special attack with your bite. If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage, and you gain temporary hit points (minimum of 1) equal to your Constitution modifier, and you can't use this trait again until you finish a short or long rest."
I'd need to play test it, but I almost feel like i'd allow a lizardfolk dhampire to "combine" those. essentially when you bite get 2d4 damage. heal for 1d4, temp hitpoints on the other. DM selects which goes where unless otherwise stated. Would love to play test and tune that bit, see how it goes.

I am currently playing a druid Damphir in a homebrew space campaign. None of my fellow players know this however, and think she's a regular human.
I have given her a few classic vampire qualities, like the telepathy feat, and her ability to shapeshift into various spooky animals is so much fun to play!
I keep dropping little hints but none of them have realised yet, only for the DM and I to have a little giggle together as it all sails over their heads. We are both waiting for the inevitable penny drop. XD

    • @TheBourneFreedom
      @TheBourneFreedom 2 года назад +6

      @@SkullSplitter Of course!
Her name is Athena Bloodmoon (and yep, I picked the most deliberately vampiric surname I could think of to make the reveal that much more funny when it finally comes around)! XD
I was gonna make her a circle of stars druid to fit with the space theme, but decided on circle of the moon for access to those larger wildshape animals such as direwolves, earlier on, which I could really play around with from a role-playing perspective of being a shapeshifting dhampir.
She also has the Faceless background, to help her appear more 'human' to others.
The main fun of playing her is that she feeds off life energy. She had a few moral issues with that over the years, so tries to take the life energy of plants and replenish what she can with her druidcraft. But it's never enough to truly satisfy her. Now, trapped on a shuttle in space, her options are a lot more limited, with plants usually being used to keep those that need air alive. So she's now stuck with a massive moral dillema on what she feeds on and how she gets it.
When the party started the campaign, I worked with my DM to have it that while in cryosleep being transported to the shuttle, she couldn't control her vampiric urge to feed while unconscious, so drained the life of half the sleeping crew (her feeding is via proximity, where she can suck the life/energy out of things like some goul, instead of just biting).
So the party awoke with this big mystery as to what went wrong and are still actively trying to uncover it as part of the plot.
In an even crazier twist that happened purely by accident, Athena was put as head of the investigation, so it's become a fun game of mystery for the party, and an increasingly difficult cover up for Athena every session.
Anyway, so sorry for the long ramble about my gal, but yes, there is an insane amount of potential playing a dhampir from a role-playing perspective, especially as they battle hunger and the sometimes unique environments they find themselves in! :)

I am just starting to build a very very similar character for my friend's new space campaign in a few weeks! She's a Sea Elf Damphir with a Faceless background, but is in the Circle of Dreams instead because that's what I chose for her hunger. Swimming underwater is going to be fun. But I'm still trying to figure out her backstories

WotC could have given us actual Vampires by balancing out their powerlevel by giving the player options also the downsides that come with being a vampire, or at least make it optional.
But WotC is so affraid of giving players an actual disadvantage, they would give us a unmeltable snowman race before giving us a vampire that takes damage from being exposed to sunlight.

With wall climb, i'd say it requires two hands to scale and one hand to stay scaled, meaning a player can not use weapons or somatic spells while moving, and can only use one-handed weapons and single handed somatic, or verbal spells while still. I'd say that balances out and would make players use it more tactically rather than cheese melee encounters.

I’m brand new to D&D so it took a long time to try to figure out what kind of character I wanted. I went with a dragonborn barbarian and when I came in dhampirs were already a thing. So I decided my character to be a dhampire. My characters name is Kela and he was raised by a family of human farmers. They found him as an egg floating down a stream. And his egg had a strange symbol on it that would not come off it was like branded onto the shell of the egg. So that brand that was on the shell of Kela’s egg was actually a symbol for a spell of binding. Some adventurers sealed away some ancient powerful monster which is unknown inside this Dragonborn egg basically locking this ancient monster away inside of Kela. This monster is parasitic it feeds on life energy but also can survive on blood that’s why Kela is a dhampir. This monster parasite became active in Kela when Kela was attacked and “on“ killed by a owlbear. And he kind of died but this parasitic monster which is hard to kill would not let him die and it brought him back to life. It took control for a few minutes and tore the Owlbear to pieces. And ever since then he’s had to feed on animals that he has hunted or enemies that he has killed to survive. Keeping that parasitic monster satisfied.

Solid video, concise and fun, like your style. Liked and subscribed. just for giggles here’s a brief build description followed by more in-depth options if someone were to read on.
A Damphir, changed by being touched by a predator deity, begins finding deeper powers not only by their racial abilities, but also as a moon druid. The night hunt allowed them to immediately feel the dark moon Druid powers. Now, climbing up walls and ceilings as a dire wolf, ever thirsting for violent understanding, their powers become more visceral as they take levels in barbarian…
… I go into a little more detail below but you don’t have to take it here, just an example. vvv
The wild shape forms become resistance to most normal damage types while every bite they take , Up to proficiency times per day of course, has the potential to heal them in their augmented animal shape and barbarous resistant form. If that weren’t enough, their spell slots are all almost exclusively used to heal themselves in their wild shape form. Hey near unkillable beast of the hunt, rarely tiring, never needing to breathe, ever shifting, where not even the tallest tower will hide their prey from them. A humanoid one moment, a house spider the next, and then a damage resistant, 2x Attack using Health gaining from multiple sources, cave bear clinging to the ceiling.
And when not playing these midnight games, they have similar spell slight progression to the Ranger, but in the end more, since I would intend on taking more druid levels then barbarian levels. Sometimes their assaults are heralded by a conjure animal spell when they are not raging yet.
Although seemingly redundant, they become a master of the spirit of the predator, a vampire lycanthrope… taking the path of the beast barbarian. Mechanically, Once the damphir bite has been used proficiency times per day, they can still heal although a little bit less, with the beast bite transformation. And they do this while in wild shape. Of course taking the bear totem would make them more resistant in general, but this build is not for pure optimization. Being able to make partial transformations outside of wild shape is extremely important to the narrative and offers some utility in fights that are long lasting.
One final note, the racial bite attack is made at advantage when under have health… While in wild shape, I would choose to heal as a bonus action after my attacks were made, helping to make my wild shape attacks advantage.… And, while at full health in wild shape, because of all the resistance and health gain, I would likely use reckless attack anyway from the barbarian class. So when it matters, and The predator is at half Health or below, they will not have advantage to strike it at this character anyway.

I'm certainly going to make my next character a Dhampir.

  • @arthurpprado

The first character I ever finished a campaign with was a Dhampir, flavored by me and the DM as being part of a species of Fey Vampires.
They don't have a weakness to sunlight, having severe photophobia instead, and feed on mana instead of normal food. In the Fey Wild, they didn't need to eat at all, since the very air there is saturated with magic, but they need to find sustenance when in the dry air of the material plane.
My character's father did the classic vampire thing and started eating mana off of living beings, which got him addicted and drove him insane. Meanwhile, my character kept a stash of magical and cursed items on him at all times, and would frequently be seen breaking them and then draining the mana as it leaked out.
Because of this, there was even an instance where my character tried to eat the force field a lich created around herself. He got charmed before he could break the force field but he still weakened it a tad.

Fun fact: this character's mother was based on Alcina Dimitrescu from Resident Evil 7. She wasn't as ridiculously tall or had a hideous transformation but she was still pretty tall for a medium-sized creature and was the leader of a village of Fey Vampires. She also had a mansion in the village, as well as the general demeanor of Lady D and one of the other player characters was even head over heels for her, mimicking how wild and horny Lady D's fanbase was

If you're the skill monkey of the party, Dhampir is a great option, since you can savagely eat a chicken or rat in front of your horrified party before dropping a + a lot on any ability check roll you need to make, up to prof bonus times a day. There are a lot of ways to juice that piercing damage, and while the 1d4 (con) is lame as hell for combat, adding +6-10 (that's not even really bending the ability too hard) on prof bonus Persuasion / Stealth etc checks per day in the non-combat pillar is pretty crazy.

I signed up for a group running Curse of Strahd with my character concept being a female Tabaxi Dhampir Vampire Hunter who is the daughter of a female Tabaxi, and a male Vampire with her craving being blood yes my character inspiration is Rayne from Bloodrayne. And I'm having it to where part of my character's bio is she satisfies her craving for blood by only feeding on the blood of living beings who are wicked/evil/villainous. And Class I'm going with is Monster Slayer Ranger or Desperado Gunslinger if the DM allows homebrew.

I'm making a Dhampir Human Vengeance Paladin who was once a governess of a royal school of magic, but then the school was taken over by a royal family who turned out to be a necromancer cult with a vampire priest as the new headmaster. When she defied their orders the headmaster turned her into his personal slave and hunter. After years of submission, she finally broke free. She ran as far as she could, until she came upon a temple. The priest, familiar with the curse, took her in. They taught her to control the dark urges and to use her curse for the greater good, in hope that some day she'll be redeemed. She now hunts the wicked and unholy, while also fighting the inner darkness within herself. And some day she'll come back home to confront the evil that took her life from her. Her name is Nina Amberstone. This character was inspired by Batman and V from V for Vendetta.

I'm playing a semi-elf dhampir. He is a wizard on Witherbloom and his goal is to kill his father, a pale elf, for creating him just as an experiment so he could see the development of half-humans and basically being a lab rat in disguise. His father left him and his mother alone when she was 70 y/o and was getting old, no explanation, just abandoned. And turns out the father hooked up with the fiance and she was pregnant, so everyone in the village thinks my character killed her because he was angry at her. So, obviously, my character wants to kill his father, but as a half-elf he was sure he wouldn't be able to do it (he is already 60 y/o), so he wanted to expand his life expectancy by being a vampire by a ritual, but it failed and ended up as a dhampir.
My character is basically a manipulator that tries that everyone likes him and that gets insanely angry when anyone mentions his parents (he literally batted up his father because he killed his fiance and left him unconscious before locking himself in his room for a week, he needs therapy but there are no therapists on dnd).
I like his backstory, I didn't want to make it too obvious or edgy, I think it fits the lore of DnD, and tomorrow I'm going to roleplay him getting a letter saying his mother died and his father was by her bed-death.
Oh and guess what his name is........ Lestam, obviously I'm not the best at names.
When he dies I want to do a druid gnome that likes to take mushrooms and go fishing and just wants to have a good time 😊 I'll probably name him something like Stork Whitebutton or something fun.

Blade, Batman, Hellsing, Alucard and the Belmonts from Calstevania, Vampire Hunter D, etc. The roleplay will basically just be Batman from the Lego movie, self serious but to the point where everyone just thinks he's lame and weird.

@@SkullSplitter Walking on walls and the ability to teleport to those walls is some powerful stuff for mobility and positioning. also, stacking buffs from the bite and knack is basically immunity to failed checks.
Furthermore, from a story perspective it's just a compelling one; one of the origins being a parasite, maybe you have a larval mind flayer growing inside you. Given both the soulknife and dhampir are things you'd need to work out with the DM, this opens the doors to all sorts of fun narratives where maybe you slowly lose your lucidity as your powers grow, and towards the end you turn on your party to protect the mind flayer BBEG.

As I read it, you can't take the ancestral legacy at lvl 1 character creation. If you start as a dhampir, you only have the dhampir traits. Ancestral legacy only kicks in if you become a dhampir in play or start after lvl1.

Which most DMs I’ve experienced agree this restriction is similar to “Bladesinging is restricted to elf and half-elf only.” I.E. stupid. Granted, RAW that’s how it is, but it just hasn’t stood up to DM or player scrutiny with anyone I’ve talked to in person.

The coolest part for me was having her origin in ravenloft and getting tricked out of the realm into wildspace in prep for spelljammer!
