I still have my DX 200 and AN 200, Bought new 20 years, synths have come and gone but these remain because they are fun and knobby and sound different than everything else
The presets are EXACTLY why this thing is gold. Any dx7 bank you get is the same old 80s crap. Yamaha really made these nice for the dance music scene. They’re really techno if you use them right.
I use mine as a sound module with a syntakt. The reverb and delay it offers does a lot for the DX200, and even better is running it to ableton with that sequencer and stuff like valhalla fx
Picked one up at an auction for $50, in as is condition and not able to test it, so I took a gamble. Found a power pack but no joy, it wouldn't power up 😔 A few weeks later decided to have a better look and it powered up. I love it. It's my inspiration box
Does anyone know how removing the PGL card affects the sounds / functionality? I've seen some listings with PGL card removed, but wouldn't be interested if that massively reduces the DX's functionality. It seems the DX200 FM sounds a lot different to the Digitone, Korg Opsix, etc. It sounds a lot "smoother" and less metallic. I can definitely hear Drexciya and early Autechre in this machine (I wouldn't be surprised if they used a DX200).
Thanks for posting this, I will never get rid of mine, it just bangs right out of the gate. I’ve been sending suggestions to Yamaha IG to make a new 8-operator one and call it something like FMX-200. It would be a beast, and a digitone-killer at the right price.
Hi there man! :D I'm just going to buy DX200 and AN200 now they are fucking GREAT! And yeah the sound of the era is well written into them, great commend! /Korridor
I own a lot of Yamahas...the DX200 is the absolute perfect bassline synth. And I mean the type that punch thru the mix...I'm talking melodic groove type bass sounds. I own a EX5 and my beloved Fs1r...the DX200 was a no grainer for $199. I'm actually still upset I didn't cope the AN200 for the same price 🤬
Hi! Which small synth do you prefer for punchy fm basses, pucks, dtabs, perc? This, digitone, volca fm 2 or something else? I think that yamaha has a natural vibe and feel in its fm synths... It sounds punchy and organic. Is it the same with digitone, volca etc?
Always wanted one of these for all the real time knob controlling. They are too cost prohibitive now for my amateur interests. I had to settle for a TX7 with Dexed to tweak it.
It's interesting by the sound... But pretty rare. I've found locally for ~1000 bucks! )) It's insane IMO. I have A4 MK2 which sounds different but it's much more superior about sound generators and the sequencer's + performance features. I've bought it for ~1100$ (for that time, now it's more expensive locally).
I think I want this. Sorry I hope you don’t mind a question… When using all the effects etc is it more convenient using its own sequencer or does it work as well using another sequencer? I have some very good ones therefore I ask… Your video is great! Thanks!
Nice video! Ihave a digitone an love it dearly , but listening to demos of old yamaha fm, it sounds more punchy somehow. Digitone is always a bit glassy
So Boris if you could only choose this or the Digitone which one would it be? I know you don't have to make that choice but I'm curious to know. Have considered exchanging my DX200 for the Digitone many times but I'm afraid I'd miss it too much
There have apparently been software editors released for it in recent years, but I haven't tried them yet. Do you or anyone have any suggestions as far as these? I really want to edit the sounds and patterns deeply and conveniently. It really unlocks this box.
wish I'd kept the mac laptop that the software ran on, as a dedicated editor. That software was super-useful, not only allowing you to edit all the parameters (most aren't editable from the hardware panel), *visually* no less, but also the pattern/automation editor was so nice to have.
Right, Patch Base. Need to try it - it looks good! There’s also Midi Quest, which I’ve also not tried. Maybe there are others but Patch Base looks like what I’m hoping for. Wonder if it communicates 2-way?
In addition, you can edit the DX200 synthvoice with a freeware plugin called Dexed.
I have an AN200 and it's probably my favorite synth/groove box of all time. I have always been curious about the DX200.

Exactly interface stands above fancy features and tbh it still has got balls compared to modern fm

Totally right
i love my dx200..addicted to yamaha fm synthesis !
The best!
I see fun FM grooveboxes and I smash like. Simple.
one of my favourite things is to run the free EG with my own note sequence from ableton. Lots of unusually and unexpected morphing
I lusted after one in the early 00s. Thanks for taking me back

Great video, I had a chance to get one of these, shouldn't have passed it up! What's the keyboard behind you btw?

Brilliant
What $50 what a deal!!
Great video. Top work. Enjoyed that. Some excellent tracks with this machine.
It's Time for Yamaha to pimp this up with dx 300
It's a shame that I'm just finding this channel. This guy definitely FM's

crazy how expensive these became, i picked one up for $200 around 2009
@@beatsbyjiro8291 really? 450 not bad... 200 euro increase in 15 years
@@Conforce Good point with inflation and all.
with effects I think the drums can sound pretty good
Hi Boris, thank you for this video. But how do you use this device? Do you record audio loops or you jam and then edit audio?
Mostly jamming and tweaking

Good combo. Is sold my tx. I didn’t use it anymore. But it sounded better than my200 but good for a different purpose
super dope tracks (4:10)

Boris, You could make a video about Behringer TD-3, it is a very popular hardware now.
What do You think about it?
Happy New Year!!
Happy ny. I have a td3 but the web is filled with videos about it. Have to look for a right angle

I sequenced it with pleasure via the Digitone or digitakt. Polyphony is added
A squid or A4 would also add a lot more fun to it
@@Conforce thanks a lot! I have the Cirklon so I guess I’ll be fine then? Great video the best I’ve seen on this machine for sure! Thanks once again!
Love the sound of the dx200 so much ! .. do you think it's a good machine for a techno live setup ?
No its super unstable! I love it though.

btw, thanks for the video - i'm now a subscriber. Been trying to go deeper with the Analog Keys, and i understand you made some vids around the A4

can you sequence without stopping the sequencer? like a tap write functionality?
If you press record and restart you can add notes but you can also tweak each step individually or add steps via a shift function
So can you initialise a patch and start from a base tone? Or are all the sounds just on it?.
You would have to write empty patches or check the manual for a init patch knob combo
very nice video, just a bit short :-)
thats a good sign. sorry i like to edit things compact rather dan long and dull
what the fuck is this editing? awesome synth though. thanks for bringing this to my attention. i am a fan of your a4 preset pack btw, good job
editing? whats so bad for someone who has music as a profession. thanks
and please tame your language to an adult level.
i like the editing lol
@@emmanuelgourot5377 2 days work lol
Great editing I must say!
Wait can you erase the presets?
Sadly no
ahh well it ain't cheap!
Not any more. I think I paid like $175 en they were out of favor, but a few months ago, I saw them for $750+, and rightfully so.
These are 500euro ....
Still cheaper than a Digitone
@@Conforce True.. The one I always wanted. was the SU700 - Please do a review on that !!
The DX200 and the Volca FM are the only two FM synths geared for performance with such real time parameter controls. Am I forgetting any?
Digitone and the new korg opsix?
