I simply *LOVE* the first season! It was more realistic and everything wasn't Alexis, Alexis and Alexis!

I really liked Claudia in the first season because she was a traditional mother in a modest family unlike the Carrigtons.

@@Magdalenkaization Keeping Lindsay on the show post-S1 would definitely have created a very different dynamic. Especially since the S2 arrival of Hurricane Alexis will already do alot to change the show's direction.
Even Katy Kurtzman (the actress who portrayed Lindsay) wonders where the writers would've taken Lindsay. In an interview I read, Kurtzman expresses considerable regret leaving the show.
Apparently it was Kurtzman's decision: like PSM, she asked to be let go.

I agree. I know I'm in the minority, but it's my favorite season of the show. The acting and writing were better, and there was more substance to it. It had a really great ensemble cast. Too bad it became the Joan Collins show after this.

I wish they had kept the Blaisdel’s as a family unit, still add Joan Collins in, I could see the Blaisdels being a strong unit, plus it would have been great seeing the Carrington’s vs Cecil vs the Blaisdels in later seasons, instead we get PSM leaving and fake!Fallon, Moldavia, Evil twins, UFO’s etc

I agree. But I also don't think the change in the show's tone is due to Alexis arrival. Rather both (arrival & tone) were results in changes in viewing habits.
Look at families from 1970s television: they were almost always impossibly earnest, loving and tight-knit. They almost always got along and if there *was* friction, it was resolved within the episode.
(Think "The Waltons", "Eight is Enough", "Good Times", "Family"...the bloody "Brady Bunch"!)
One could speculate that, after the tumult of the 1960s, viewers wanted to escape via easy breezy (ie, perfect) families on TV.
But with the various recessions of the 1970s over, people were flush with money and were feeling frisky for more challenging television. Which is probably why soap operas became both very popular and focused on the upper class. It can't be coincidental that the soaps of that time either focused entirely on the ultra wealthy or excised families who couldn't be written as wealthy (or convincingly mid to high) upper class.
Dynasty just happened to be undergoing a creative overhaul right when these issues came to a head. Both Aaron Spelling & The Shapiros (the EPs & show creators) have said the show wasn't doing well ratings-wise. Plus, Alexis wasn't even meant to be a main character - nor was Joan Collins their first choice for the role. But the producers realized they had a gold mine with both the character and actress.
So it's not so much that Alexis changed the show as it was introducing Alexis was a response to keep pull in more viewers. Because look what happened: it worked.
IMO, if course. Also? That was alot of words! Apologies! ☺️

Originally the show was supposed to be about the people and their workings of the oil industry to compete with the success of Dallas but since that wasn’t working, the show became more about wealth and opulence especially after Joan Collins came in. The 80s in general was about money, materialism, and “greed is good” to quote Michael Douglas in Wall Street.

It did become top-heavy with concentration on wealth over substance. I'm sure they could have devised a storyline involving Lyndsey and her schoolfriends instead of taking us to the mansion at every opportunity. After a while there was really nowhere for the story to go.
