I’ve raised chickens for a long time. In your area u need to cover the top. Put wire in ground all the way around fence then cover with dirt. Predators will dig under
definitely will need to bury DEEP the barrier around the coop (and incorporate some needle wire to deter predators that try to dig under) or pour a deep foundation for the perimeter. Also be very aware that some night predators if hungry enough will hunt during the day (foxes were the brazen ones one year here) and the move unbelievably fast. ...it can be heart breaking.
First time viewer. Enjoy watching you and your family. Especially Crow and your sweet puppy. Good luck with the coop. Remember protect from the ground up. Make sure critters can’t dig underneath or critters can’t get in from an open top.
Oh gosh! I missed u guys! The weeks that had past weren’t the same when u didn’t post a new video. Soooo happy to see u all specially hearing CROW’S LAUGH again. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Hey Matt, Blue and Crow. Thank you for continuing to make videos. I recently broke off a five year relationship and I just wanted to say you guys help me to keep hoping for a happy future. Love you all and thanks so much!
Informative. You guys are always building and constructing. That is a good thing, The dog is growing and so is Crow. He is enjoying childhood and more. I have never see what you are doing with the eggs before.
At least this vlog still has some relevance and produces interesting excerpts of their life, good work guys, I’m not into telling total strangers that I love them, that seems to be disingenuous to me, but you guys do look good together, and its wonderful that you have been able to include Crow, into your family, Happy new year.
Matt & Blue! You two men have inspired me to share my story with the world along with my best friend! I watch every single video. You've made me laugh and cry and I can only hope to have a family as beautiful as yours some day. Thank you!
OK. Here's a tip. When hatching eggs, the pointed eggs are roosters and the round eggs are hens. I didn't believe it at first, but after 40 years it's spot on. Watch the humidity and turn turn turn those eggs. 😀 If you have a dirt floor in a coop, weasel, mink, skunk etc etc will dig underneath and kill. Some critters will kill the whole flock and just take the heads. Also, open top pens are prone to air raids by hawks, eagles and owls. And then there's the big predators...........LOL !!! Good luck guys.
Hi Guys, What a fun video. Made my day, the trampoline looks like great fun for you all. Hope the chicks hatch, going to be interesting. So glad you are back and happy and healthy. Take care of yourselves. Love. Bill
As regards the chickens...Plastic fencing is available. Installation is as easy as putting in those deck spikes. Furthermore, you may/will want to change the places where the chicks are feeding, and this light pliable fence let's you do that in any shape anywhere you wish. Weave rope from the coop to trees to hold up the top of this fence. Prefabricated coops are available on line and that will relieve you of trying to build a foundation, and the good ones permit you to take out the day's eggs without going into the smelliest poop on the planet. These little birdies will smell good to your neighbors (wolves, bears, cats, coyotes, fox, etc.) Get an air horn and put motion detector lights on the coop. Never, ever, not once leave the chickens outside overnight. Feed all the green compost to them and then aerate their poop and mix with other compost to make yourselves high nitrogen fertilizer. This story reminds me of the time my father bought a black angus. We had a barn but no fence. He "staked her out." Too many chases and returns later, he put in fencing for beef around a three acre area. This taught me that I may want what I want when I want it, but I'd really better prepare before the critters come home to roost. Have fun; Crow is.
Nice vlog guys and Happy New Year!! Hope you got some chicks from your eggs. Glad to see you again in the New Year. Take care and love from New Mexico,, Kim.
This episode reminds me of Julie Baker from movie "Flipped" she won the best experiment for her project "A chicken is born" . oh I love her. Such a striking personality
I had a friend that named his chickens after drag Queen's he had done show's with watching him feed them and pick one out for cooking was the funniest thing ever. Nice to see you back hope you had a great holidays. Be safe
25 North, is that reference to I-25 that runs north/south in Colorado? i miss the cold air, the snow of my homestate of South Dakota.... The bay area is a different cold.... its rainy and annoying. lol.... Still a fan across the US....
Happy New Year Matt & Blue & Crow. Think the ground would have been easier to work with when not frozen? Wish you the best on your chicken coup and hope you get some hatchlings. ;-)
Happy New Year! Hope the eggs hatch. As stated below be sure to put wire on the ground and cover with dirt because pesky critters will burrow in and consume your feathered friends.
Peace To The World! It’s been more than 2 weeks! Yey :) you guys are back! I’m the happiest ✌🏼🌍 Hope you guys are doing very very well inspite living in a fa away location filled with snow ⛄️😉
I hope you have read some books (or internet) about keeping chickens. as previous commenter said, you will need to put the wire into the ground. If not other wildlife, the chickens will dig under it. The marked size is much too small! Even if not all the eggs hatch. My friend had 3 and they destroyed her garden which was about 5 times as big as your patch. Have you got a large enough hut? In winter they will spend a lot of time indoors. So you need to be able to put in feed and water. They will need cleaning every 2nd day, esp in winter. In the summer you should be able to let them roam, if you are prepared for large birds to take one from time to time. Hope all goes well!
My friend recently went away and we took care of her chickens for 2 weeks. Of course we had a cold snap here in Wyoming and that made it such a pain in the butt! But the eggs made it all worth it! I spent too much time Googling chicken things I have become somewhat of a chicken whisperer. Animals will get under and over if they want something yummy to eat! I suggest putting bird netting or chicken wire on top. Then when you start noticing things trying to dig under, you'll be putting the fencing a few inches into the ground. Pretty sure Google thought yep. That Gina from Wyoming must have bought chickens Lol. I have a brother in law that literally built his chickens a playground area. They love to play! 💙💙💙
Hope the chicks hatch...my grandmother used to raise chickens, but she ordered her chicks and they came in a large box, so cute. Crow is growing so fast, he appears tall for his age...neat young man.
Keep in mind... 1. Hens or Y’all are going to turn those eggs 4-5 times a day, for twenty two days, that pencil is going to rub off, LOL! Use a pen or marker. 2. Think about your plans for those chickens... Laying hens, roosters, or bred to eat... you are going to have a kid (or maybe even an adult) crying so hard and unable to eat dinner because your beloved Fred, Henry or Dorthy is in the soup or on the platter.
My family got over that pretty fast. Meat must come from animals. If you are lucky, you'll find a farmer who will take away live chickens and bring back de-feathered clean, headless roasters or fryers.
John Hayes - True, But I remember crying so hard, just bawling my little heart out knowing it was my favorite chicken (we were buds!), on the table. He really was sweet, no pun intended. And yes, we knew they were food, we would butcher, and pluck, clean and then freeze them every 3-4 weeks. But THAT chicken was my friend, he’d come like a puppy when called, I’d raised him his first few weeks of life in my room w a towel and a light bulb [edit- and a wind up loud ticking clock] in a box w some others. If we were outside around the fire pit he always come over and fall asleep in my lap. Other chickens before and after were just food, but that one, he was special.
I grew up on a small rural farm. Dad was a miner, but we had to raise a lot of our own food... chickens, pigs, cows, goats... we had fresh milk, butter, canned fruits and vegetables. When one of my brothers first brought his intended to the farm, she commented, "What pretty eyes on that cow, what do you call her?" To which my brother replied, "Steak!" Now twenty-some years into their marriage, the children (from a previous marriage) and grand children don't bat an eye talking about what we eat. Dogs and cats are pets. Sure, we named the farm animals... but they were always treated as food.
@@Erin-Thor Some animals are so special that they can be exempted from the hatchet, and this story makes me a little sad for you. I have a nephew who raises chickens but solely for eggs, and he eats chickens and all the rest if its raised by someone else.
John Hayes - Thanks, What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger they say! (I still say "they" lie.) And I TRIED to save his neck, pun intended, but DAD was having none of it. LOL! We used a machete thou, not a hatchet. I do remember one weird thing which still makes me laugh. One month I brought a couple of chicken legs (the claws) to show and tell, I went all out, shoebox, strings tied to the tendons, so you could pull one and the claw would open, the other close. I thought it would be good to show how the chickens foot worked. While not a farm community, it was a horse community and chickens, ducks, rabbits, horses were common. BIG MISTAKE! The kids screamed, bailed, I was called a freak, the principal, nurse and counselor were called in. The rough equivalent of a hazmat team back in the day. I was held in kids jail and my dad had to come pick me up, and with all the drama of a trial, box put on the table by the nurse wearing gloves... "THIS is what your son brought to school for show and tell!" As the lid was thrown back with great effect. Everyone looked at me like I was a chicken murderer, which I kinda was. The school counselor was talking about my father needing to take me to see a professional, the nurse suggested I see a doctor because I had TOUCHED IT! And the principal had taken his paddle down from the wall... I just KNEW I was dead. My father just listened, and got up to leave saying calmly "Exactly where do you idiots think the chicken you eat comes from and how do you think it gets to your table?" Voices were raised and dad told me to wait in the car, and I immediately complied. The next day the teachers said nothing else about it, but their rage was palpable. LMAO! Ahh, good times! Back in the car I started apologizing and my dad was weirdly not angry.
Go to the feed store and order some chicks for this spring. Nothing is better than fresh eggs, and nothing is more annoying than a roster. There's some pretty good advise about the floor and roof/top of your pen...it's not just the sides that count. Good luck!!!
I THOUGHT YOU WERE GONNA HAVE ANOTHER KID!!! HOW DARE YOU, I GOT FREAKING EXCITED! haha. Excited about the chickens as well though lol.
I thought the same thing too...
Me either
I imagine that was quite deliberate.
My first thought too!!
Me either hahaha
You guys are just.. the happiest people I've ever seen. You are living your life till the end! Keep doing so.
love how crow's playing with the switch but also having time outside and doing other activities. You're great parents!
I’ve raised chickens for a long time. In your area u need to cover the top. Put wire in ground all the way around fence then cover with dirt. Predators will dig under

You guys are the reason i came out to my friends. 🧡
How'd it go?

Ugh, I want to do that, but i don't think it's a good idea *shrug*
I came out to my close friends. They are very comprehensive. Plus some knew my sexuality already before I came out
