I am a chemical engineer and I am familiar with the oil industry. Indeed, I have been working on oil related projects in Alberta for the past twenty odd years. The reason that Canada has not built oil refineries over the past few decades is simply because it is not economic viable. About ten years ago, the French oil company Total seriously considered building an oil refinery in Alberta but it didn’t materialize as Total found that the rate of return was not acceptable. This has nothing to do with Trudeau.

How US can make it economical viable and can the government support to develop a business which can be competitive and rewarding in long run? For example, Korea supports Samsung for LED and electronic industry and Hyundai for cars and EV many years ago. Now we can see the difference. Same for the other countries. Are there any long-term vision strategic plans to help Canadian to compete?
Your question is hard. Samsung’s LED business, as you mentioned, is a good example that government support makes a successful business. Another example is TSMC in Taiwan. Generally, highly rewarded businesses are risky. Since Canada’s economy has been resources based, Canadians in general are reluctant to engage into high risk businesses. The elected governments, regardless of the party, reflect our collective thinking. One example to illustrate my point is the difference between how Sweden and Canada use one resource - trees. We cut the trees and sell them in the form of lumber while Sweden turns the trees to assembly furnitures (high value added products).
Agree with the Ikea example. Like Samsung and Apple manufacture smart phones in other countries using resources from others. They make the most profits. A good government is forward looking to lead the country for the people. Strategic planning is essential. Singapore is a small country, however, they have focused areas and competiveeness in SE Asia is high.
