Long answer short: The Eastern mountains have a better climate for rice cultivation, the staple crop on the island. Also the 1st people to arrive in Madagascar arrived from the East, not West.

The second point is not entirely accurate. The ethnic groups along the coast of Madagascar including the East coast have higher African genetic admixture. It's actually the central highlander groups like the Marina that have a more austronesian admixture.

I guess the only other group that could have plausibly came earlier were South Indian seafarers, who had the technology for it and had already sailed south to modern-day northern Mozambique on the East African coast. I guess it was just luck. Austronesians engaged in seafaring and settled in many coastal areas of the Indian Ocean. Bantu agriculturalists could not reach there until later due to migrating from very far by foot over difficult terrain.
Asking why nearby hunter-gatherers on the mainland did not settle it originally is not really a question worth asking IMO (especially since it is not visible across the, it just didn't happen I guess.
