@@dgart7434 You don't understand why Putin wanted to invade those territories in Eastern Ukraine. Because he wanted both Azov and Black sea to belong to Russia. In Crimea he, his oligarchs and cronies got villas and businesses there and they needed to short drive from Moscow to Crimea. Not to mention the industrial regions in that part of Ukraine. Reminding that Ukraine could strike at Russia at any time will force Russia to commit more forces on defense in the future rather than allocating all its troops on Ukraine like it did before. in the future we will see a Russia that have thinner front line. even if Ukraine retreated out of Kursk Russia will likely still commit more resources in defense as they would likely won't let his happen again. giving Ukraine advantage on Ukrainian soil as they will fight fewer opponents in the future.

Maybe this is what The Ukraine is thinking. Not sure.
When you look at The American Civil War, the one big lesson about war that I see is that strategy matters more than tactics. Grant and Sherman really thought strategically. Sherman's march was about stripping the Confederacy of supplies. Grant saw that the Union needed to pin down Lee. Grant and Sherman are thought of by many as lesser tactically, not something I claim, but strategically they were excellent.
Please note that logistics are not something I think as secondary either.

It’s too early to tell whether this offensive will have strategic significance in the war, but here are a few potential effects:
    1. Russia must now more seriously defend its border with Ukraine. Before, there was an asymmetry where Ukraine had to fortify their side but Russia didn’t.
    2. Ukraine’s morale has been boosted.
    3. Ukraine have shown that the West’s fear of escalation was partly unfounded, and now the restrictions on Western weapons has been further eroded.
    4. Ukraine has exploited Russia’s inability to adapt to dynamic warfare, particularly in places that had no military logistical support previously. This was also displayed during Prighozin’s march on Moscow, where there was no response from Russia’s military.
    5. Russia will eventually need to divert resources from other combat areas.
    6. Russia will be forced to retake the Kursk territory occupied by Ukraine. This may cause Russia to continue attacking longer than the natural culmination of their Summer advances in the East. Attacking causes more attrition than defending in this war. This may cause further strain on Russia’s military.

I think this might backfire hard.
Russians who opposed the war until this point can now be convinced that their core homeland is under threat by Ukraine.
Russian propaganda could turn this into "The defence of the motherland" or something, instead of "We need to denazify Ukraine", which was a much poorer excuse to invade.
The bombing of Hamburg during WW2, Operation Gomorrha, had similiar effects for the Hamburg population.
Hamburg, a very left leaning city, even back then (in which a huge number of people where just workers and were not really convinced by Nazi ideology), had a huge increase of volunteers for the Wehrmacht after said Operation. Why? Because they felt the impact of the war and decided that they need to act.
The same effect might apply with that offensive done by Ukraine.

The reason it was a surprise is that Ukraine barely has enough troops to prevent the Russian offensive in the eastern provinces. This was an insane move to sacrifice men for some territory in Russia for the inevitable negotiations with Russia. Putin has told Zelensky that any peace talks are off the table now, so he must watch the AFU to fight and collapse or surrender in the next few months. If Zelensky had taken the peace deal offered by Putin over 2 years ago, he would have saved the lives of over 400k Ukrainian soldiers and the destruction of most major cities in Ukraine. He chose war instead.
