Glad you like them! thanks Mike . hopefully next week I’m away for the weekend hunting with other falconers up north, so far weather has messed it up in the previous couple years.
Good question! we have caught plenty for the freezer which he will eat during the moult and the season, so occasionally if a rabbit is caught and looks like no real injury I will release, keeps the rabbit population up and the hawks has its hunt. I was throwing bits of chicken up in the air, day old cockerels.
What are you using bird steel or lead ? I was thinking of doing my firearms license for steel shot Woodpigeon for the peregrines. Are you going to the Falconry Fair at highclere this year ? I’m buying two wooden blocks with the cork top off SilverFox Falconry they look great.
No , lead , this gun is not suited for steel. I have steel shot in 12 bore and a gun that I use, I eat the lead shot pigeon, not for birds. I do get steel shot pigeon for the moult, I also use a metal detector prob to remove the shot although no need if steel shot is used as you know. I have several shotguns all vintage.
@@freebirdofreason1994 very nice I use a magnet to test lead isn’t magnetic I don’t bother removing any shot waste of time Woodpigeon is great for falcons. The fare has been moved to kelmarsh Hall near Rugby I just found out 9th-10th of April Dan Mercer is running it Shame it’s not a falconer running it instead of a BOP trainer.
@@freebirdofreason1994 We will see what area are you coming from Hertfordshire ? I’m taking a peregrine up that weekend to a friend so it works out nice for me. I recommend braid off my friend Jade I’m picking two sets up not had a single broken tail feather from 3 peregrines this year.
I’ve seen in one of your videos you checked the pheasants eyes after woody caught was that to check for avian flu and also I’m after a male Harris hawk not yet but I’ve only just got a mentor and the season already over for most falconers anyway I’ll be mainly flying for feathered game as the rabbit population down here is nearly 0 lucky toe see them down here and also I’ve been monitoring the avian flu map not sure if it’s me reading it wrong but no cases where I am I can’t wait to meet my hunting partner in the future awesome video when will the video with u and Dave sharpe be coming out 👍
yes , I checked to make sure that pheasant appeared healthy, no guarantee but at later stages of the virus is obvious. check out bird flu on the government site, I read most of it, unfortunately this year was mainly to avoid avion. there is a flue map also if you didn’t already know. hopefully next season it may be different, every year seems to have a avoid avian period one the bird flue kicks in from migrating birds. good luck with your hawk .
Sorry I didn’t answer this bit ,I’m with Dave Sharpe this weekend so maybe next Friday 24 th I will upload , if possible I may upload a little this weekend but may be to busy. Please let me know when your hawk arrives.
Great hunting right here! At 5:40, you released the rabbit that Woody caught. You let it just run away! Really? Well, you did explain to someone else that you already had plenty of rabbit in the freezer, and since it had no injuries, it made sense to release it! However, a caught meal is a caught meal! Any other hawk that would have caught that same rabbit would have finished it off and made a complete meal out of it! Its just nature's way! There's no way that rabbit would have escaped on its own! The ending was quite interesting when you threw tidbits in the air for Woody to catch in mid-air. I tried doing this with a juvenile Red Shouldered Hawk, but he got nervous and flew off when I threw it too high! Here is the video of that! ruclips.net/video/hvGVsb4nkRI/видео.html I got a huge problem! I don't know how I'm going to sleep at night tonight! I actually trapped that juvenile hawk tonight using a pigeon trap. I named him Sammy by the way. After he got caught in the trap, I had slowly but surely approached the hawk. Each time I approached, I left the area for about 5 minutes. Then when I had approached the closest, he stopped struggling in the trap. It was only when I had reached for his wings that he started chirping at me! I then started opening the trap. He then got his talons stuck upwards in the net and I couldn't yank them out! When I tried opening the net, I held the wings down, but he started getting very aggressive and he did prick my hand a few times. I ended up holding him by his wing, I'm sorry about that! But then I immediately grabbed his legs, but he got me with his talons a third time. My hands are perfectly fine. He barely got me, and I was bleeding for only a second! It was no different than pricking my fingers on thorn bushes. I ended up tying his legs with light string to a tree branch after I gave him some water and I rubbed it over his feathers. I tried it to a tree branch. But then whenever he tried flying off, he was hanging upside down. I then tried pushing his back up so that he can balance himself, but he kept falling off. I was almost ready to just leave him hanging through the entire night because I was SOOO mad! After I almost gave up, he managed to brake free from the string and he left to roost for the evening! He did end up taking the string with him as far as I could tell. The one thing I'm worried about is that I may lose his trust forever and he may not come back to wait for my food! But the reason why I trapped him is because I just really want to train this hawk to get closer to me. I just feel that me feeding him meals isn't enough to build his trust because he always flies to random places that out of my view just to hide from me when he eats. I really need this hawk! Now that I've seen this trapping first hand, I now see why almost all Falconers cast a hawk before rescuing it and placing the equipment on. I will have a video of me trapping that hawk. I'll let you know when I edit it.
you need a mentor, I’m sure it’s illegal to trap in America with out one , plus never leave hawks hanging upside down they would die .hopefully it’s ok .
I did see Sammy again today. I took my jacket off so that the hawk wouldn't recognize me. He had his back turned, which has never happened before. When I returned with my jacket and camera equipment, the hawk was gone. I am wondering if he recognized me the first time and flew off from me. I then place a couple of frozen chicken hearts stuck together on the same branch I normally place the food on. I left for 10 minutes, then came back. One of the hearts was gone and the other was on the ground. I'm glad Sammy is still alive, but I'm pretty sure he will never trust me ever again after the pain he went through last night. That means I lost 3 hawk friends so far! I only have Mikey and Molly so far! That isn't the only hawk I trapped, I used a chicken leg in the last trap to trap an adult male Red Shouldered Hawk. The problem with using a chicken leg though is it could injure itself by bumping into the leg while its struggling in the trap! I never got hurt by that hawk because I grabbed its legs on the outside before I opened the trap. I didn't do that with the juvenile hawk! That adult hawk doesn't want to come near me anymore or respond to my whistle ever since I trapped him. His mate doesn't want to come near me either since she heard his distress calls while I was grabbing him in the trap. A crow ended up going for my chicken leg today while one of the hawks flew across the street and didn't even want to steal the chicken from that crow. Anklets and jesses would be a better option for a hawk than using string. And yes, I know I would need permits to trap a hawk. But I'm not planning on keeping that hawk, I'm just trying to train it to come closer to me and letting it go! One day I will seek a mentor when I have the time to keep a hawk.
Another great little film. Full of interest. Thank you.
