I am from sri lanka and sinhalese. It's not buddhism that this it's sinhalese nationalism that goes under buddhism that did this horrific things. Most sinhalese people forget that most famous buddhist characters in history were south indian or Tamil like Buddhaghosha thera, bodhidharma etc. South india and sri lanka had simillar buddhism in history.

Buddha is the 9th avatar of Lord Vishnu. There are several records saying that lord Krishna was against the caste system but unfortunately it never changed. Hence Vishnu reincarnated to show the world the true dharma free of some meaningless ritualistic practices and the caste system. Total misunderstanding. Buddha never encourage to eat meat. But he adviced bhikkus not to eat meat on their own wish. For common people he never advises to eat vegetarian or Non-vegetarian. He leaves it to their will and wish. Buddha is a practical man.

Sorry Buddhism is the counter answer for Hinduism. As Dr.Ambedkar stated, Indian history is nothing but the mortal conflict between Brahmanism and Buddhism.

Buddhism was not appropriated by Hinduism, it was religiously contested, conflicted and engulfed by Brahminical Vaishnavism and to an extent Saivaism.
Thirumangai Alwar was a Saivite, he stole golden Buddha Statue to build Vishnu temple and converted to Vaishnavism. Many of Alwars and Nayanmars life story will present details about greater conflicting stories about various sects of ancient Hinduism like Brahminical Saivam, Vaishnavism and decline or morphing the sects of Buddhism, Jainism and Assevagam in Tamil nadu.
