- Allison Miller, accomplished jazz drummer and session player, stopped by Reverb to discuss how she uses nontraditional percussion elements to introduce dynamics and depth to her playing. When she's not touring, recording or playing Late Night with Seth Meyers, you might find Allison at the hardware store looking for cool new pieces to hit and throw around her kit. In this video, see how layering and supplementing your drum kit with alternative percussion can add nuance and inspiration to your playing.

This woman is a genius
bloc She’s only doing things the drummers from Sonic Youth and Wilco have already done.
No.
I just love her ideas and musicality!
holy shit. I need her as my teacher asap. Respect!!
I feel like if you recorded her jamming around on a small kit for half an hour, you'd probably get enough awesome percussion samples & loops to last a producer's lifetime. :D
That was really interesting! I especially loved the mouth tube idea. It's like a talk box for drummers! Thanks for such an interesting video.
Exactly. Like kettle drums.
Bit of a late reply, but I recently saw Gavin Harrison has done something similar to this on his current tour kit and I thought it was brilliant.

Fantasitic! Also makes me think of Glenn Kotche (Wilco) who loves to experiment with sounds and textures. Thanks Allison! (First saw you w Ani a bunch of years ago and you just keep getting better.)
Whoa!! @8:30 ... That's way cool. You're a badass Allison.
Bravo! LOVE these ideas...Love the stick/brush combination...nice kit! I have a Yamaha absolute custom kit that I love. Been a working class drummer myself in Reno for 4 decades. My hats off to YOU Allison!
That was one of the coolest videos I've seen. Thanks for sharing, Allison!
Awesome video! So many cool techniques to try. Thanks Allison and Reverb!
Allison Miller is the Official Cool Cat of the Day
I think Mani Neumeier did the tube thing back in the '70's, and Hollywood drums had the pedal operated floor tom, similar to a tympani.
Using tubing is an inexpensive way to get that effect- I don't know why more drummers don't do it.
Thanks for the video- I like drummers who experiment a little, instead of just banging away like everyone else.
Allison- check out Tony Buck, an Australian drummer living in Berlin. I think you'll identify with his way of doing things.
Such an attention to detail. Amazing.
Hi Alison, thank you for this inspiring video! I find your creativity admirable and very motivational! I'm loving the dynamics and the subtlety of how you layer the vibes: you effortlessly show how you achieve musical effects by thinking out of the box. You show how you put your technique is in function of creating sound and music in the first place. Respect! Just a couple of months ago, I was researching/exploring how the internal air pressure would affect the syncing & interaction of both heads of a drum by plugging my bicycle pump into its air vent. In contrast to the musical use you show here, I was merely trying to explore the extremes of the parameter. Back then, I was rather amazed about how responsive its effect was on the sound. In this video you show how that effect can be used in a musical and elegant way! Thanks for your energetic sparks of creativity.
:)

Saw Roy Haynes use air into his drums to alter the sound. Nice to see the concept did not disappear. Love the creativity and "dissatisfaction" with the status quo of the drums.
