  • I recently traveled to Chicago for All Monsters Attack Expo and took the time to visit Galloping Ghost Arcade. The question I wanted to answer?: Is it worth taking a visit to Galloping Ghost for the shmups alone?

    "Is it worth it?" Simple answer is, YES. If you are a shoot em up player and in the area, 100% yes. I was there when I went on a family trip back in 2019. Still have my $20 receipt as a souvenir.

    our hands always hurt back in the 90's we never had auto fire so that's normal

    Great, comprehensive vid. Good to know about no autofire and also that any game audio queues that aren't airhorns should be considered essentially inaudible over all the other games.
    13:21 looks like this cabinet swapped polarity to 'off'.

      Haha yeah its pretty hard to hear anything from your machine. And for what it's worth, after I did my rounds and was on the way out the Ikaruga machine was back up and running!

    I didn't know this place existed, and I've been to Brookfield Zoo plenty of times. Maybe I'll drive into the city to visit it one day

      It's definitely worth a visit and not too far from the zoo!

      You took me WAAAY back to the Brookfield Zoo. My Dad used to take my sister and I when we lived in Illinois in the 80s. I guess the zoo is still operating?

    4:00 + = The least galloping ghost can do is enable autofire setttings on games like Darius and Donpachi. They're there, the buttons are mapped, why not use them? Truxton 2 wasn't invented for nothing.

    • @GojiGuy
      @GojiGuy  Год назад +4

      Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me. Donpachi actually -might- have it on, according to Pearl.

    • @ratix98
      @ratix98 Год назад +2

      @@GojiGuy can confirm. I think the donpachi cabinets have auto fire enabled. But getting them to enable it took way longer then it needed to.

    6:46 Autofire is literally a feature of dimahoo and doesn't even need to be turned on in the settings and they have it in a cab with two buttons :( Also the screen looks warped on the right side.

    • @GojiGuy
      @GojiGuy  Год назад +1

      I never played Dimahoo, is it like Battle Garegga where it just has a default auto out the gate? In that case I think it's correct, right?

    • @SirFritz
      @SirFritz Год назад +2

      @@GojiGuy Yeah but it's more like cave where it's on button C, holding button A swaps polarity and uses your charge shot.

    my friend, the S in Illinois is silent. i know you’ve heard this before

    Maybe one day! I would have to stay in Chicago a week, to justify the cost of taking off work. Also my 48 year old knees might not survive standing at the cabs all day, for a week. 😂
    For now I play my shmups via emulator with Coinops frontend.

    In regards to you being disappointed about autofire turned off - I personally have never encountered games in the West during the 1990s with autofire enabled. I don't really view Japan as setting the standard either. Every country is different and sets their own rules.
    Autofire is also questionable in my eyes since it also breaks the balance in some games. For example, autofire ruins Metal Slug since the standard pistol and heavy machine gun do the same amount of damage per bullet. But the Heavy Machine gun shoots faster. But if you enable autofire, the pistol becomes just as strong if not better than than the Heavy Machine gun since you have infinite ammo with the pistol. Thus making the Heavy Machine a pointless upgrade.

      I don’t disagree some games would have their balance ruined with auto fire for example I’ve played auto fire Galaga and that is wayyy easier.
      However a lot of Japanese shmups were designed with with auto fire as an intended way to play so not having it can also break the balance.

    • @GojiGuy
      @GojiGuy  11 месяцев назад +3

      It's a case by case basis, for sure. I'm not saying every cab needs autofire (or every auto needs to be 30hz) but mushihimesama, espgaluda, Deathsmiles, and DOJ aren't "from the 90s" and autofire is standard on those cabs.
      And I'd also argue that Japan absolutely does set the standard. The genre is way more popular there, and they hold the vast, vast majority of WRs. The best kept STG arcades are in Japan.
      I also grew up in arcades in the 90s, and I still would rather have autofire available rather than nkt. If you don't want to use it, don't. But it being there is a huge accessibility feature.

    Have you tried roll tapping? Basically, it means you'd rapidly slide four fingers down a button, and repeat continuously. You may have heard of something like it before; this technique was adapted by professional NES Tetris players to achieve scores previously only possible in TAS. It could still sore you, but it can be used to potentially achieve 20Hz-ish fire without modifications. I've tried it out on Galaga '88 (the easier Japanese version) and have managed to get as far as passing the 500K threshold at Dimension 5.
    I've been wanting to go to this place for a long time, though there is one concern I have: for cabinets that have two games in them, how is a game selected? It doesn't look like there's an extra button on the unit for such a thing like there would be for most KVM switches computers can connect to.

    • @GojiGuy
      @GojiGuy  Год назад +2

      Huh, I've never tried roll tapping but I'll give it a shot. Might make G Darius manageable.
      As for multi-game units, the all have switched. Sometimes it's on the panel, sometimes its in another spot like the coin drop, but they all have switches. I switch over Gadien to G-Darius on the video.

    • @Korstre
      @Korstre Год назад +1

      @@GojiGuy Ah, so I'm guessing the switch must be on that silver plate on the front in the Darius cabinet? I had been starting to get the impression that it would just auto-cycle until the player hit buttons, but that clears a lot up.
      Even noting the rolling technique, a lot of games here would definitely benefit from autofire, especially when the incentive for arcade operators to have every coin burned as fast as possible is removed. That's also what I've relied on for clearing the Nu route in one credit. Rolling is very doable on the Sanwa switches I've got, but I don't know how comfortable it would be on those American-fashioned buttons.

      I went to my local D&B for House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn and the place was a real dump with awful games. Such a disappointment.
