Hi Glenda, I've had my Stanwood winder for a couple years now and thought I'd pass a couple user tips on to you. First, if you keep your source yarn on the left side of the winder, you won't get the pull that Cody seemed to be getting. It will flow much smoother. Second, feed the source yarn through your left hand while you wind with your right hand. This helps provide tension so the cake is wound more evenly. I love my Stanwood and wouldn't use anything else now. Another fantastic tool is the Wool Genie. It holds your cake and you never, ever have to pull out yarn while you're working. It releases yarn at your pace. Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. They're so helpful and inspirational.. Right now I'm working on the French Country Afghan and it's working up beautifully!!
I second both of those tips for winding. I have a large stanwood and it is a great winder. It's not my go-to anymore (my mega wool winders from knitters pride took its place), but I still have it because it is a good winder.
Nice. My husband got me the Stanwood yarn ball winder for Christmas. I love it, so much easier than hand winding. Enjoy the new winder. Cody did a great job.
Thank you both so much! I bought one several months ago and have had questions on how to assemble. I have been using with some problems but Cody's demonstration gave me the solution to my errors. Now I can enjoy winding my yarns. You are always there for me
I bought mine 44 years ago in college, as I had a weaving class. Mine looks the same as yours. I have used mine multiple times over the years. It is an old tool that is very useful. I have used mine to wind balls of yarn and crochet thread. I have wound multiple threads together to create new colors you cannot buy. This is a wonderful tool. I don't remember it being called a LARGE ball winder though.
Stanwood is the best!! I found that as long as my swift is in an opposite corner of my ball winder. I bought both from Stanwood and couldn’t be happier!
That looked so easy, I haven't had the chance to use any hanks . I've always been afraid of would tangle the yarn trying to wind it. I know what I want.for my birthday. Cody did a great job with the instructional video part also.
Great job Cody 😊. I'm happy you're pleased with it Glenda, and that it makes caking easier. Wonderful of Steven to send it to you, so very generous. Thank you for sharing 🥰
lol, I have the same swift and the smaller ball winder that you have. I also just bought quite a few skeins of the Universal DK cotton. What a coincidence! Might have to invest in a new ball winder, lol. thanks for the info Glenda.
Thank you for showing us how this works compared to the smaller inexpensive ones. I e been considering getting one; but the expense was making me think twice before purchasing. Have a great day.
I'm actually trying to use my new little winder, but I have to unravel my hank first. I did a masterful job of tangling it up when I first tried to do it.
Oh I LOVE my winder!! I found the little one frustrating very early. When I got my big one I went a little crazy making cakes with my scraps, so much so that my bursitis in my shoulder seized up the next day.
Thanks Glenda and Cody for showing us a demo on how well this winder works, I am impressed with this machine and would definitely buy this model if I required a yarn winder, take care and stay well.
My Stanwood winder is attached to my island in the kitchen. It was the only place i could put it as the space for attaching to table was not wide enough for my table or desk.
Glenda I think if you mount the winder to the opposite end of the table from your swift, so there is not an angle to the yarn but it comes straight, it should wind even smoother.
Im with Cody, sounds like it needs afew drops of oil on the winding cog if you don't have any machine oil a couple drops of kitchen oil, Crisco oil or something vegetable oil will do! 😊
Thanks for this video, Glenda. I have the little one you showed, the yellow and pink. Can't get my box right now for name. I do not like mine, it jumps the gears, does not wind very well, and when I am using the cake it sometimes comes out "messed up" inside.
I have a Stanwood winder, Amish swift & umbrella swift....love them all!! They all have a different purpose. I prefer the umbrella swift for making a cake, it holds the hank better....but I prefer the Amish swift if I need to "rehank" the yarn or make a hank. I do that if I happen to 'cake dye' something & it needs to be unwound to dry.... (I don't have a nitty noddy) If the yarn cake is too tight, it does stretch it out, rewind it...BUT turn the crank in the opposite direction so the yarn isn't twisted. It feels weird at first, but trust me!!! There's nothing more annoying than yarn that's all twisted up on itself.
That's so fun to watch!😍 I'd like to get a winder and swift someday, lol, there's a few fancy hanks in my stash waiting for me to figure out what they they will become! 😉💜 Thanks Glenda and Cody for the show! ☺️
I have this winder and love it. One thing I learned is to wind the cake twice so that your yarn isn't too tight which could disrupt the fibers. Try it and watch how much bigger your cake gets!
Take the center pull thread from the center of the cake, thread it on the winder and go. It's exactly the same as though you're using a swif but without the swif. I drop the cake into a plastic ice cream container set on the floor to hold it as I wind.
I have a Stanwood large-capacity yarn ball winder (the bottom part is green); just have to install the replacement clamp they sent for it. (Note to self: Ball-winder clamps do NOT play nice with the lip on the underside of a card table!) I also have an Amish-style tabletop swift like yours -- but it's in a closet in my craft room which I don't currently have access to (because a loveseat I tested for Walmart got moved into the yarn room for storage, and is blocking the closet door).
Wow!! What a beautiful ball winder!! I just bought a knock off brand of this one on Amazon but haven’t tried it yet. Hopefully it’ll be just as good! Thank you for sharing! 💜🧶
The Stanwood was a bit out of my budget but it was time for an upgrade so i found a comparable large capacity that came with a swift for a good price on amazon. It arrives tomorrow, hopefully it works just as well.
HI GUYS, I THINK IT WOULD HELP IF ITS STIFF TO TURN, I THINK IT WOULD BE OK TO PUT 1 TINY DROP OF SEWING MACHINE OIL ON THE GREER INLINE SO IT WILL SPREAD ITSELF IN BOTH GOGGS.❤❤❤
Your ball winder may be a LAMXD Needlecraft Large Jumbo Metal Ball Winder. It is not a Stanwood. I own a Stanwood and it is green (with a Stanwood label on it) and the LAMXD ball winders are blue. Enjoy your new ball winder.

I'm happy with my Stanwood too
Thank You so much for the tips it really helps!!
I second both of those tips for winding.

I love my Stanwood and agree with those suggestions.

Glenda and Cody ~ what a great tutorial on how to use this ball winder! Thank you for using "Universal Yarn" for the demo.
The winder seems to be a great addition with your yarn hanks. Great helping hand for Grandma. Great happy mail. 😇🤗🙂
Cool video. Hi Glenda and Cody. Your grandson is amazing helper.
Your grandson is so nice always helping you! ❤️ Love the new winder!
That looked like it worked fine. Way to go CODY 😊

Nice. My husband got me the Stanwood yarn ball winder for Christmas. I love it, so much easier than hand winding. Enjoy the new winder. Cody did a great job.
This looks like a copy of the Stanwood 10oz winder. I’ve had my Stanwood for about 5 years and it is definitely a game changer. You’ll love it!
Great job demonstrating the ball winder Cody.
Thank you both so much! I bought one several months ago and have had questions on how to assemble. I have been using with some problems but Cody's demonstration gave me the solution to my errors. Now I can enjoy winding my yarns. You are always there for me
Hi Glenda good to see you are doing well. That is a nice yarn winder. Nice of that person to give that yarn winder to you.
I love my little yarn cake maker. They sure are handy, and so helpful. Thanks for sharing!
I cannot wait to see how this new ball WonderWorks Glenda. It looked amazing!

Hi Glenda and Cody I am very glad you did this I have the same winder and I struggled a little without instructions ❤️❤️
Great job Cody! 😊 I have the cheap winder. It works fine for me. The one you are showing is huge. Enjoy! 🎉
Great video , Glenda and Cody . Love and Hugs .
Thank you for this wonderful video. ❤
it helps if you hold the yarn as you feed the winder. it regulates the tension.
Great job Cody. Looks like it worked well.

I am so going to check this out for my other thrift store finds once
I am done with the scrap blanket.
I really like the looks of that!
Awesome 👍👍
Thanks for the towel idea, I’m going to try that!
lol, I have the same swift and the smaller ball winder that you have. I also just bought quite a few skeins of the Universal DK cotton. What a coincidence! Might have to invest in a new ball winder, lol. thanks for the info Glenda.
Nice, looks easy peasy
Glad you like it. I love mine and as you see you can do a lot more yarn on this one.
I really love it. Thank You so much!!!
Thank you for showing us how this works compared to the smaller inexpensive ones. I e been considering getting one; but the expense was making me think twice before purchasing. Have a great day.
Awesome I have this one as well. Wow I am impressed! I have not used mine yet
I’m so glad you posted this! I got one of these for myself and it really helps watching you guys doing this before I start on mine. Thanks 😊
Nice winder.
I have the LAMXD also. A drop of cuticle oil or olive oil makes all the difference. Enjoy!
Thanks Glenda and Cody for showing us a demo on how well this winder works, I am impressed with this machine and would definitely buy this model if I required a yarn winder, take care and stay well.
I have one like that but haven't used it yet. You made it look easy.
My Stanwood winder is attached to my island in the kitchen. It was the only place i could put it as the space for attaching to table was not wide enough for my table or desk.
I must get a large stanwood. i’ve have. cheapie for several years. This has convinced me I ❤need a Stanwood.

The larger one is a Stanwood yarn winder. I have one and love it!!!
Thanks for this video, Glenda. I have the little one you showed, the yellow and pink. Can't get my box right now for name. I do not like mine, it jumps the gears, does not wind very well, and when I am using the cake it sometimes comes out "messed up" inside.

Love it!
I have this one - a large one and it is the best.
I have the exact same one & i totaly love it! Ive wound up to 14 oz on mine lol & had no issues
I only have like a few hanks nothing to talk about but i do need a swift though to wind it into a cake
That's nice I have one like your old one but I think I might want to upgrade
Now I want a bigger yarn ball winder and a new yarn swift 😂❤❤
❤Very nice👏👍
I have this winder and love it. One thing I learned is to wind the cake twice so that your yarn isn't too tight which could disrupt the fibers. Try it and watch how much bigger your cake gets!
Explain please. Do you wind it, unwind and wind again? All of it or a section at a time? If all of it how do you keep it from tangling?
@@joysamoheyl9108 yes this is what I want to know as well
Take the center pull thread from the center of the cake, thread it on the winder and go. It's exactly the same as though you're using a swif but without the swif. I drop the cake into a plastic ice cream container set on the floor to hold it as I wind.
I have a little winder, but don't usually have hanks
I have a smaller wood one that is very smoth. Fo like tha ability to wind lager hanks. Think I saw BOD use her Stanwood to wind a 1# mega hank.
Very nice winder. I have nobody that would hold a hank on their hands so I can ball it up, so I stay away from hanks, sadly.
That's identical to a Stanwood. They say they hold 10 oz but I've fit 12+ oz and no problem.
Cool

The Amazon knock off works great...it goes together just like Cody does theirs.
@@lindawiltshire9646 Thank you so much!! 💜🧶

Very nice! How do you like the yarn Swiffer? I need one😊😊
Yay
I have a small yarn winder. I was able to make many out of the yarn
Where did you get your yarn swifter?
It was a gift from a subscriber
Definitely seemed easier
I need a big one like that! Where can I get one?
Amazon

Thank You for the information, I did not get any info with it so was not sure of the brand,
Don’t use oil, it will ruin your yarn. It get better with use.
Hi Glenda and Cody, I have the same ball winder and I love it. I put a cork coaster on top of my wooden table so it wouldn’t leave a mark.🧶💗
