@El Patrón There's the story of how Larry Bird scanned the gym intensely before an All Star Game 3-point shooting contest. Pippen is the most underrated player to ever play in the NBA, why? Because when they talk championships every year we always hear Michael has 6, Kobe has 5, Shaq has 4, Duncan has 5, James has 3, Curry has 3(& counting), yet out of all those we never ever hear Scotties name mentioned along with Michael's as if he did it all by himself(which he didn't). I was there and watched Jordan get knocked out of the playoffs year after year(By Bird in '86-'87, then the Bad Boys Pistons from '88-'90)until after Pippen arrived('87-'88)then 3 years later('91)they where winning it every year! At least Bird gets his props when Magic Johnson paid him the greatest complement when he said, "If there was no Larry Bird, then there wouldn't be no Magic Johnson!" Scottie on the other hand never gets his props which he should always get when Jordan is talking who's the G.O.A.T, he should be mentioning Pippen's name as the reason Jordan is even in the conversation when the G.O.A.T. topic ever comes up. Shaq does it with Kobe, & Kobe does it with Shaq, Duncan does it with the David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker as they all do with him when mentioning their championships they always mention each other as well as their respective coaches. It's time Michael did the same because he would never have 6 rings if it wasn't for a fat man(Jerry Krause)who actually put that dynasty team together(traded away fan favorite & one of Michael's favorite players Charles Oakley so they could have the draft rights to Scottie Pippen & Horace Grant in the '87 draft) and gave a B-league basketball coach his first shot at coaching(Phil Jackson) who would not only go on to win 6 rings in Chicago, but repeat that same feat in L.A. with 5 more rings having Shaq & Kobe in Phil's second act of The Zen Master Strikes Again, only this time using his mojo on Shaq & Kobe~all the way to the promise land!!!

Jordan's game evolved so much over the course of his career.....I love watching the '80s aggressive, aerial Jordan the most because I love to see athletic players attacking the basket. People more familiar with the 90s Jordan are probably surprised to see him taking so many bank shots at this stage of his career.
@Chris Paschal Bird didn't own Olajuwon at all, it took the entire Celtics team just to contain Olajuwon from wrecking both sides of the court. But I will say that the 86' playoffs put Bird over Magic on the all time list in my book.
@Chris Paschal Olajuwon wasn't guarding Bird, but Bird was definitely trying to HELP guard Olajuwon. Unlike Bird, Olajuwon didn't have the teammates that would allow him to leave his man to help on defense. Just like the majority of his career, the only way to defeat the team Olajuwon was on was to stretch him to thin because he was the anchor on offense and defense. No other player has been asked to do as much as Olajuwon and nobody has been able to win a ring with the caliber of help he had.
@Chris Paschal oh you recall? Do you recall Olajuwon averaging 31p, 12r, 2a, 2s, 4b 52% FG on the Lakers about 11 more points and 3 more rebounds than Ralph? Cuz that's what won the series. Olajuwon had 27 offensive rebounds in that series and his blocks seemed to start a fast break about 75% of the time.
Jordan's athleticism was just better than everyone's. Birds wisdom is just better than anyone's. And had the better over all game. Larry Legend founder 50/40/90 club, twice. 3 straight MVPs. The important is to make the team play better, nit score. I don't know about this game, but for example iverson would shoot all the time and a pre and have negative impact on the team game many times.
Bird's haircut was in 1987. There was a statue carved of Bird for the Boston Sports Museum, and it was unveiled in February, 1988. The sculptor mentioned having to give wooden Larry a "haircut" in the middle of carving it. So unless it took more than a year to carve, the haircut was in 1987.
MJ was unbelievable back then, and all point of his career, other than his wizards comeback, which doesn't matter much. What he did in that boston garden with the 63 points in the playoffs against an amazing defensive team like that is just freakin unreal. That's why Bird said he thought it was god dressed in basketball clothes. It was hard to even imagine someone doing what MJ did that night.

Absolutely true. I wasn’t a fan,... i watched a few games and found it mostly boring. Until I heard of Jordan. When I tried watching a game with Jordan I was hooked. Jordan made NBA basketball fun to watch for non-basketball fans. In the 90s if you only knew 1 person in NBA, it’s Jordan.
@@Gregory-sm9pf In meant if you lived through the 90’s and weren’t even watching or interested in sports or basketball, you’ve heard about Michael Jordan. If you were to ask a person who never even follow basketball much to name one basketball player, likely they’ll say Michael Jordan. The Jordan brand transcended basketball and even sports altogether. The “Michael Jordan” or “Jordan” became something beyond the name of a basketball player or a shoe brand. It got used as a high bar or standard. Everyone who wants to achieve great things in their craft, skills, or industry (etc), often used “To be the ‘Michael Jordan’ of…” [that]. I heard it used in presentations, engineering meetings, product development (not even sports related). “To beat our competitors, we got to be ‘Michael Jordan’.” So yea, everyone with access to media of any kind, heard of Michael Jordan… around the world.
1987... so Bird in his prime. Its crazy how Dennis Johnson can't do anything defensively against Jordan... and DJ is a HOF defender... and even though Bird has a height + experience advantage over Jordan, its crazy how Jordan still cant guard Bird on a 1 on 1 setting... Bird is absolutely getting easy buckets on Jordan...
Jordan wasn't even guarding Bird the whole game. Bird had a good first half but Jordan had a better second half. If Bird was scoring easy buckets but Jordan scored 11 more points than Bird, what does that tell you? Jordan had a better game statistically but Bird had the better team.
Boston to Chicago? No, After Boston won then LA won two in a row, then the Pistons won two in a row THEN the Bulls won. After the Celtics were done beating on the Bulls the Pistons took over and it took the Bulls another 5 years to make the Finals.
Bird was King of the NBA by this point; MVP in 1984-1986 and winning titles in '81, '84, and '86 as the defending champion Celtics ran game on everyone outside of Los Angeles ... shows you Jordan was really behind, could score and put up numbers but was NOT A WINNER WHEN IT MATTERD MOST.
Each generational great had their own super team to fight, michael was the celtics and lakers, kobe was the celtics, lebron had to deal with the spurs and warriors, for shaq it was houstin and indiana, allen iverson had to try and survive the lakers after finally beating the pacers, tim duncan had to deal with the miami heat.
Parish & McHale were really great players but does anyone think they would have won all those titles or been HOF without Bird in their team? Bird made everyone play better and I contend if it had been other similar players they'd be HOF too. As much as I rate MJ, in time it is clearer to me that Bird is the GOAT and that's why MJ never beat him in playoffs even once...
Right. If you stack your team up with talent you can win easier. Unfortunately, Jordan chose to build his team up and win more championships than Bird.
For the younguns: 1. This is a pretty good illustration of why the Jordan Bulls never beat the Bird Celtics in a playoff game. The Celtics were a complete team with a ton of weapons. By the time Pippen and Grant had become stars in Chicago, the Celtics' run was already on its last legs because of age and injury (and the death of 2 players). 2. The Washington Bullets, mentioned early, became the Washington Wizards about a decade after this game. 3. The Chicago coach is Doug Collins, who would later coach Jordan as a Wizard, 3 years after Jordan had retired from the Bulls. 4. This was one of Bird's 50-40-90 seasons, which is showcased by how many free throws he nails effortlessly. 5. At one point Jordan is guarded by Rick Carlisle, later the longtime coach of the Mavericks. 6. Charles Oakley found his most success as a Knick in the 90's, and he was later regarded as one of the Knicks' most visible fans for years. 7. Zone defense during this era was considered "illegal" and resulted in a technical foul shot. There was no "defensive 3 seconds" rule at this time, though. 8. People often remarked at the time (and later, from clips), how White the Boston crowd was in the 80's, as a proxy for Boston's racist history. This Chicago crowd looks....very White as well.
They only played 2 best of 5 series so when we use the word EVER it sounds like something that goes on and on. Firsst of all with a starting lineup of Dave Corzine, Charles Oakley, Sedale Threat and John Paxon with Gene Banks the 6th man to go with MJ to play against one of the best Dynasties ever is as big a mismatch that you wil ever get.Second MJ average about 39 combined and destroyed Boston. The Bulls started rebuilding from the bottom and were only a couple years in. Remember when they drafted Pippen. He averaged 7 pts in his first and about 12 in his second. People thought he may have been a bust. The fact of the matter was as MJ's game matured you could have replaced pippen with a dozen guys and the Bulls would have still dominated and if Pippen were somewhere else nobody would know who he is.
48 points vs 37 doesn't mean anything. I'll take 37 points and 10 assists over 48 points and 1 assist any day. This is how you actually win the game, not just look good in the stats.
Bird, Parrish, McHale, where the 1st Big 3(2-7footers>Parrish,McHale, Bird@6'9"), all 3 averaged 10 rebounds a game plus Bird & McHale always avg. over 20pts. per game during their title years with '86 being one of them !!!
@@tangiers59 I'm guessing a Lebron fan trying to somehow rationalize the situation. But it's completely indefensible and that's the hilarious thing about it.
Anytime you have a player that averages over 35 points a game is usually a sure sign of a team that is not going far in the playoffs(Kobe couldn't get it done with the Lakers in '05-'06 when he averaged 35.4, and Jordan couldn't get it done from '86-'90 when he averaged over 37 points to 33, it wasn't until Michael brought his scoring down to 31.5 points a game in '91 and starting trusting his other teammates(Pippen, Paxson, Bill Cartwright or otherwise known as alias~Medical Bill~as Jordan used to call him because he was always injured and thus@the medical facility) to pick up the scoring load was he able to finally when the big dance~! Why, because in the playoffs we all know that they play at a higher gear and defense rules the day(which they would use to key in on anyone scoring a lot of points with double teams, traps to get the ball out of their hands and into their teammates hands which is what the defense wants because when a player averages over 35 it usually means that they don't have anyone else on that team that can score). My final point is when a player averages over 30 it's more than likely they will not be as successful during the playoffs unless you have Stephen Curry on your team followed by teammates(Durant, Thompson, Green, A.I., Cousins)!!!
You said nothing but bullshit. Jordan didn’t make it far before pippen because he always faced a superteam with no help. And even when they got pippen, he was trash his first 2 seasons and wasn’t a All-Star. Jordan averaged 33 ppg in the 89-90 season and they still made it to the ECF and they only lost because a all star pippen couldnt play in game 7 against a loaded pistons team with 3 all star hall of famers. Pippen, Cartwright, And Paxon all have terrible playoff numbers. Look it up.
Remember Bird was so good Kevin McHale averaged 26ppg in 1987, Robert Parish 17.5ppg, Danny Ainge & Dennis Johnson over 13. While Bird averaged 28.1ppg and 9.2rbs when both Mchale & Robert Parish averaged 10rpg. Jordan would never let Pippen or anybody shoot that much
@@melvynsngltn27 That's some crazy teams stats. Those Celtics were unreal. I'd still take the '96 Bulls team though. The Bulls had scoring and more importantly their defense was insanely good, possibly the best defensive team ever.

@@donkingdom611 Jordan didn't have any kind of supporting cast back then. And the idea that he was a ball hog is one of the biggest misconceptions of all time. Jordan facilitated from the 2 spot more than any other 2 guard in the league. When Doug Collins put him at PG over the last 24 games of '88-89, he averaged 30.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 10.7 assists, he logged 7 straight triple-doubles and 10 out of 11 games. The one he didn't get a triple double he scored 40 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists. It's not the 2-guard's job to be a ball distributor, especially when giving your team the best chance to score the rock requires shooting it yourself. If he had spent his career playing PG, he'd still have been the GOAT.
That must have been one hell of a duel of the mouths with two of the greatest trash talkers of all time, Bird and Jordan, going head to head!
@El Patrón There's the story of how Larry Bird scanned the gym intensely before an All Star Game 3-point shooting contest. When asked what he was doing, he said, "I'm looking to see who's going to finish second." Bird then went out and smoked everyone in that contest. On this list of the greatest trash talkers of all time, sportsnaut.com/2014/07/ten-best-nba-trash-talkers/, Jordan was ranked second and Bird third. (The Bad Boy Detroit Pistons of the late 80s were ranked No. 1.)

@kevtn8 Probably not. Bird couldn't get into Jordan's head, and trying to do so would only piss Jordan off. No need to motivate MJ to drop 60 on his arse.

Larry Bird is the most underrated great player to play in the NBA
R U an Idiot? Bird and MJ are tied in my opinionfor GOAT !!!
I don't think he's underrated generally. It seems to be widely accepted by fans, players, and announcers that he's one of the greatest of all time.

@Chris Paschal Bird didn't own Olajuwon at all, it took the entire Celtics team just to contain Olajuwon from wrecking both sides of the court. But I will say that the 86' playoffs put Bird over Magic on the all time list in my book.
@Chris Paschal and Len Bias wasn't better than Jordan just stop it
@Chris Paschal Olajuwon wasn't guarding Bird, but Bird was definitely trying to HELP guard Olajuwon.

This was awesome as a young kid watched the NBA all the time back then. It was much different, tough ass dudes.
Jordan's athleticism was just better than everyone's. Birds wisdom is just better than anyone's. And had the better over all game. Larry Legend founder 50/40/90 club, twice. 3 straight MVPs. Joined Wilt and Russell only other players to do that. In that ERA. Is completely insane. Bird beat every superstar player(s) of his era. That's even more insane.
No doubt Jordan was more athletic but Bird did things that don't show up on stats.
Michael Jordan scored 48 but The Boston Celtics have won the game as they usually do.
5 First ballot HOF player's vs one All-Star who's only 23 TF did you expect... Which is why Bird and Magic are on record saying once they give him better player around him watch OUT!
The important is to make the team play better, nit score. I don't know about this game, but for example iverson would shoot all the time and a pre and have negative impact on the team game many times.
Its because bird assists more than Jordan does because bird has a good knowledge of the court
bird had every excuse to not be good at basketball other than his height and despite all that still becomes, arguably, the best ever.
Slight correction, this was in 1986. You can tell by Bird’s hair lol
l made the same comment😄
Bird's haircut was in 1987. There was a statue carved of Bird for the Boston Sports Museum, and it was unveiled in February, 1988. The sculptor mentioned having to give wooden Larry a "haircut" in the middle of carving it. So unless it took more than a year to carve, the haircut was in 1987.
Young, a yet inexperienced genius is fighting alone against Boston Legendary matured trio..and Pipen is missing tho..

@@mandodelossantos2 You know nothing of this team if you think that. They literally had 1 guy that could shoot from outside 10 ft other than MJ. And that was Paxson, who was ok at best. They literally had nobody to draw the D away from Jordan. Even if he passed it to a guy on the wing, if it wasn't Paxson nobody would even bother to step out. The bulls of this year were a terrible half court team if MJ wasn't able to score. I think they were the 4th worst offense in the league that year. You simply cant run offense if you can't make the d step out to guard anyone. Just look at all the times he drives and there are 3 bulls in the paint. What kind of shit is that? Absolutely true. I wasn’t a fan,... i watched a few games and found it mostly boring. Until I heard of Jordan. When I tried watching a game with Jordan I was hooked. Jordan made NBA basketball fun to watch for non-basketball fans. In the 90s if you only knew 1 person in NBA, it’s Jordan.

“To beat our competitors, we got to be ‘Michael Jordan’.”

For the younguns:

Jordan learnt from Bird, I believe... here MJ is getting better learning from the best at the time. You don't win without knowing how to lose. The Celtics made Chicago to improve, as they did with Detroit. That's how it used to work
@J B They will ignore this because they hate Jordan. This new epidemic of Jordan haters is sad.
@J B A lot of people have trouble accepting that Jordan could actually be as good as he was. There always has to be a series of "what ifs" and hypothetical situations to tear Jordan's legacy down.
@J B How would anyone know?
Skip Carey and Bill Russell on the broadcast? Crazy!
Bird GOAT. Reality check. I don't even have to watch to the end to know Bird won the game.
deadly steele first, chill lol. This and Jordan’s 63 are the only great games he had against the Celtics. They could both score on anyone, but mj had the better defense. Larry bird was a better shooter, passer, and rebounder. If he had stayed healthy he could’ve easily won more championships and mvps. If he had the same longevity Jordan did, I Jordan wouldn’t have 6 championships or mvps.
@@donovanm5128 Bird played 13 years. Jordan played 15. Only 2 extra years. And those 2 years were with the Wizards when he was almost 40 years old. Bird is great-don't get me wrong. But he can't take on Jordan
Jordan vs Bird... Now in stores for your Nintendo Entertainment System. Supplies are Limited, act now.
Can you imagine Jordan, Bird, Magic, LeBron and Shaq on the same team in their prime?
Lebum would be the fifth option.
No he would make Shaq and magic three point shooters
Jeff Linke no way they could all co-exist, unless it was the Olympics or something.
@@maniacmasturbator2411 I know this is late but... "Imagine"
There wouldn't be enough possessions to satisfy their greatness..somebody would always be under utilized
They are both great. Remember Bird did have to score 48. He just needed to win the game. ;)
Who won? ...yeah Larry's the GOAT.
Bahaha
00s kids: Kobe > LeBron
90s kids: Jordan > Kobe
80s kids: Bird ≥ Magic > Jordan
70s kids: ...
Wilt chamberlain??
Yeshua Bless everyone
There is no god besides allah. The god of Jesus the son of the virgin Mary.. the god of Moses.
Jordan.. amazing...
Larry's better
With McHale and Parish, sure.
gingataisen bird won 3 straight mvps in his prime, had he not gotten hurt after the third mvp he could’ve won more and won more championships.
Human Effigy Bird shouldn’t have beat up that bartender in the 85’ playoffs. I don’t know if Boston would have beaten LA anyway, but who knows. Bird’s shooting numbers clearly went down after hurting his hand on that bartender’s head
Better team
How many NBA guys of the social media era could score 63 on Bird ?
None.
Bird beat Jordan 23-11 head to head.
He had 5 all stars in a team and jordan didnt have any single star
Those announcers hatin on Mike giving Larry bird all the compliments when he makes a good play but when Jordan makin half court buzzer beaters they have nothing to say smh sick
Bird won in multiple systems with multiple coaches and multiple teammates. MJ never won without pippen, grant, rodman or the triangle offense..
All HoF teams, though.
@@gingataisen yes you're correct, mj now has pippen, and rodman in the hof.
Goats get remembered but legends never die.
Bird still to me is the second best he second person I would pick after MJ. Not career or numbers just what they did how they did it and the fear they instilled. The killer mentality. Two best ever right here
The
Legend road the Goat? Every time. lmao!
being a kid watching Bird at the old garden nothing like it.
The late great Kobe Bryant (RIP) Said it best about Bird.. The younger generation has a lot of work to do to understand Birds greatness because as Kobe put it “Bird was just $$$”
Nobody uses the bank shot anymore
Mike was the greatest, but he had to learn to spread it around before he got his rings.
This game proved one thing. Jordan is better player than Bird.
Larry was an older guy here and still did well
He was 29 in this game
This is like watching one of the best DPS characters vs one of the best Sub-DPS characters in a video game lol
old Larry was quite the magician, one must say! if MJ had a solid team, he'd have 9 or 10 NBA championships!!
John Crazy If he never retired for those two years to play baseball, he may have an 8-peat! :) Then again, if Bird and McHale stayed healthy, they may have had 1 or 2 more... let alone if those Julius 76ers teams weren’t there to knock them out two of those years in the early 80s, or Magic’s Lakers twice in the Finals.
Truth Brotha tbh MJ would’ve burnt out before he won his 4th or 5th ring had he not retired. He said that much himself.
Ben Moore I disagree. I also don’t believe MJ’s public stance. Most likely, he was forced out of the league for that 1.75 year timeframe due to his ties to gambling.
