I still see Yume Nikki as a game where even when your character thinks they're awake, they're still dreaming. Comatose, even. It's because Madotsuki never opens her eyes, even when "awake." And those dreams within dreams within dreams even try to tell her she needs to wake up. But she can't, until she takes that dive outside of safety. Like in the Witch event, the glimpse of freedom only comes once you fall. I think when she falls, she leaves the dream world, and finally wakes up into reality. And this is the song that plays as she recalls her dreams, family and friends around her in the hospital overjoyed as she's awoken: All the people from her dreams, in their real state, overlaid with the versions she could only half-remember in her sleep. She will never forget, and now she is truly free.

The scarf child was your shyness... The creature rubbing the pole was part of a tragic experience, and the long creature with it's eye dripping was your sadness and feeling of hopelessness. And me... I am the image of a person you hold dear... But also the guilt from what you did to him... I live in my small world of space with that feeling of helplessness, pain, and anguish... Not being able to recall why I felt that way. But when I saw your sad, sunken eyes, I had a comforting feeling that what did happen wasn't done on purpose. That the person triggering the negative feelings was you... But that you felt remorse for your actions. So don't live with those regrets weighing you down. We aren't monsters in a nightmare, we are friends. If you can realize this, than it will be true. But if you cannot, the pain will go on... You have a task at hand, Maddie. I cannot control you, so if that day comes when you are sure that death will ease your pain... then, sayonara... And goodnight. My dearest Maddie. (Just an idea for some fan fiction... You get what this music is supposed to be, and have even gone out of your way to actually finish these pieces from little scraps the game provides and make it into what it was supposed to be!
