Not that huge range (Varady / Popp / Fleming) and virtuoso coloratura (Hallstein / Sills / Dessay) is something you meet everyday but when combined with Big Dramatic Sound (Flagstad / Nilsson) the result is incredibly rare (the definition of Assoluta)... Ewa herself had once said comparing her voice to Callas': As Callas had once said Voice is not an elevator!! :D
Callas had made that famous Elevator comment in 1958 when she denied a Met Bing contract that required her to interchange between Lucia and Lady Macbeth within 1 1/2 week performances :D

I was fortunate to hear her sing Klytemestra in Toronto. Pure neurotic genius with the richest voice possible made her overshadow an excellent Elektra. I wish I could have heard her in other operas!

I remember this performance very well. My love to Rossini Festival in Pesaro started than. Teatro Rossini was fully packed with people who got mad after her aria. She is absolutely one of the greatest contraltos of 20/21 c. In this opera she is still amazing but if you grab Naxos recording of opera arias with her than your hair will rise for hours! She performed the recorded program in concert (around 1993 or 1994) in Kraków Philharmonic - that was ubelievable what she was able to do with her voice at that time. I will remember this concert forever.
I feel so happy with your comment because I have seen underrated and super-underrated singers (not to mention the overrated) but I think Ewa Podles and Oralia Domingeuz give the word Underrated a new meaning... both of them singers of Legendary abilities both in pure vocal terms but also as musicians and interpreters who never achieved not just the legendary status they deserved but not even half the fame they deserved...
I am proud to say I discovered her Naxos Rossini when it was first released (and I think it might have been earlier than 1993) and she has been right at the top for me ever since, even though I hardly heard anything more from her before RUclips
What a pleasure to listen to, such a warmth and dramatic color, it's addictive. I am a viola player and I definitely feel a lot by listening to this. Ewa is really outstanding, she'll be in the history as one of the most colorful contraltos ever. Luckily nowadays, if you want to hear a young talent that might take over after Ewa retires, is Avery Amereau, unbelievably amazing American contralto ❤
Just incredible tone. Absolutley love contralto. I didnt do much classical training but no matter where i was, i was rarely placed in the correct category and didnt develop my lower range til later in life. Well, i dont wish to sing anythi g but rock music but I absolutely love Ewa's dramatic notes. Thanks.
@@LohengrinO there are a few rock singers who tap into some classical techniques, which I find quite interesting. One of my favourites was the late Ronnie James Dio. His breath control was to die for.
