  • Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini (19 February 1743 - 28 May 1805) was an Italian, later Spanish, composer and cellist of the Classical era whose music retained a courtly and galante style even while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centres. He is best known for a minuet from his String Quintet in E, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), and the Cello Concerto in B flat major (G 482). The latter work was long known in the heavily altered version by German cellist and prolific arranger Friedrich Grützmacher, but has recently been restored to its original version.

I learned this piece on piano and was supposed to play it for a concert when I was twelve, then BAILED! I had to go in person to tell the organizer myself and write an apology letter. She was furious, because she had already sent the program to the printers, back in the day when this was a much more involved process. I was too ashamed after that to go back for lessons. I had reached that point where the diligent students are separated from the creative genius students--and there were some amazing musicians in our club back then! I loved the piano (still do), and I realized that my hard work wasn't enough, and it kind of broke my heart. It took me a few years to find my true talents, but the lessons I learned in the devoted years of piano have influenced my whole life. I always hear this with a tinge of regret, but also fondness.
