    That's a *beautiful* looking game and really awesome to see much effort and attention being put even into retro games, so many years after the platform's heyday.

      The platform. Here the Amiga. Becomes like a music instrument! Especially the c64. It is almost organic. Like an organ. You know? The game developers are organists. They love their instruments which they know so well :)

    This is the sequel to the very-capable Rogue64, isn't it?
    It's even better than I expected, and looks to be a good game even by modern standards. The pixel art and fluidity is delicious.
    And unlike many "pixel barf" modern games, that seek to represent incorrectly the limitations of older systems, this operates on a real 16-bit system from the 80s.

      Cheers, the game was too good to not to show to a wider audience. I am more likely to do more of these pop in videos to help sustain the channel during quieter c64 activity periods.

    It kind of reminds me of Mystic Towers for DOS. In fact I'd be surprised if it did not take some inspiration from that game with the kill all enemies on map to progress sort of logic.

    • @Izzanbaad
      @Izzanbaad 3 месяца назад +1

      What's that got to do with this isometric game?

    • @Wishbone1977
      @Wishbone1977 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Izzanbaad I believe that is exactly what he is referring to. I see his point, but it all comes down to the control scheme. It doesn't matter all that much if you keep strictly to the isometric view, but many games, including this one, do not. You will notice that the minimap is _not_ isometric, meaning that the isometric view of the playing field doesn't line up with the map. As such it means that up-left on the playing field is west (left) on the map, while up-right is north (up).
      This is where the control scheme comes in. Some isometric games align the controls with the map, meaning moving left will actually move your character up-left on the playing field, while moving up will move your character up-right. This is quite unintuitive, and can lead to unfortunate situations like walking into an enemy unintentionally.
      Other games may align the controls with the playing field (and/or have the map isometric as well), so that you need to move up-left to have your character move up-left. This is much more intuitive, but can get annoying on digital joysticks. If you can only move in the cardinal directions between the tiles of the playing field, this means you have to always move the joystick diagonally, which takes more strength. Basically, the spring holding the stick gets harder to move the further away from center you go, and moving diagonally to activate for instance both the left and top microswitches requires you to move the stick quite a bit further off-center than simply going left. As such, your hand is likely to get tired much more quickly playing such a game.
      All that being said, it's not something that bothers me a lot, but I understand that some people might have a problem with it.
      Of course there are isometric games where this never comes into play. Populous 1&2 are isometric but they are mouse driven and you don't control any characters directly, so the issue never comes up.

    • @RetroGamerNation
      @RetroGamerNation  3 месяца назад +1

      You are 100% correct with your analysis. I had to position my joystick diagonally in order to avoid what you described. This would be the only 'weak' point with the game, otherwise its very well produced

    • @Wishbone1977
      @Wishbone1977 3 месяца назад +1

      @@RetroGamerNation I take it that the control scheme is aligned with the map then?

    Its not enough that every other video game in 2024 is a "ROUGELIKE!!!"(tm). Now it's infecting machines that have been dead for 30 years.

    • @TheVanillatech

      @@merman1974 Well, technically it died back in 1992/3, when the 386 PC was churning out silky smooth 256 colour titles like Alone In The Dark, UFO : Enemy Unknown, Wolfenstein 3D etc.
      As a retro machine it's still interesting. I've had WinUAE installed for 20 years now I guess.
