Something we have done for many years, that is also easy for your backpack, is an Altoids tin with cotton balls covered in Vaseline. They are super quick to light and burn for several minutes, as well as being very compact. Never needed more than 1 per fire. Keep up the great work, we really enjoy your channel!

Thank you so much for this, Amanda! After freezing at Death Valley last February (unexpected cold snap) and not having a great way to get a fire started, I, of course, went to RUclips for help upon return home and happened upon your video. These fire starters are great! I've made two batches and have used them for two recent camping trips. Thanks again for such great content!

Another idea to make this a little easier. You could make a hole in the bottom of the egg carton piece, then put a knot in your string and stick it through the hole so the knot is under the bottom of the egg carton. Then pack it with your lint or other material. Then you don't have to spend the time trying to tie it up.

I made the first batch to try at home then had to make another batch to take camping. These things are amazing! I also use toilet paper rolls cut in half since our cartons are for fresh eggs. Thank you so much for sharing!

Great tip! Like alot of others, I've done the 'massaging vaseline into cottonballs' method too, and in a pinch, just smearing a glob of the petroleum jelly all over some toilet paper, wad it up in a ball & it will work as well. If you have some cooking spray like Pam or whatever, you can spray a bunch of that into some paper towels, roll em up into a bundle & light it, but it doesn't last nearly as long as the other methods. Good stuff!

We use a cardboard egg carton, mixture of dryer lint, cross-cut shredded mail, boiler bag, unscented wax. We leave the egg carton intact. Drop a mixture of dryer lint & cross-cut shredded mail into each cup. Melt wax in boiler bag and pour equal amounts in each cup. Once all is cooled, cut the cups apart. Try each up in used dryer sheets. Then store in a baggie or container. Each will last apx 10. Minutes helping to start even damp wood.

..as a plus ,, coat the lint or cotton ball with vaseline before covering with wax ....cut open or spin knife tip to expose (kinda like a wick)...helps start faster ,,burns longer..

Our Cub Scouts will be making these as part of our fire starting skill builder. I’ve made a similar version using toilet paper rolls to contain the lint. I love the idea of the string to dip into the wax.

I like it. Another thing to try is with sawdust. Great vids. I enjoy every one.

If you would like a few firestarters you can store in your top pocket, wallet etc. just dip makeup removal pads in melted wax. They are not only compact but burn for some time.

We just started camping as a family. All these years thinking about it and I had no idea I'd enjoy it so much! I just made these today and can't wait to use them for our next camping trip! I have also purchased some bins for food organization that I also found tips for on your channel. If you have any tips for organizing clothes for a family camping trip I'd love to see your ideas. We have subscribed!

Good Morning young lady,, I have just come on to your channel and am impressed with the various video's subject matter ,, keeping content to the topic ,, well done .. Have watched a couple this early A.M. ,, Sub'd and will view more in time...
As I am an older backcountry enthusiast for over 50 years ,, you seem to have a system put together well that works for you ..👍
...before I check out ,, I want to commend you on stressing the importance of extinguishing any campfire "cold" before leaving..
Amazing that for many years of watching outdoor camping,,trail related shows and video's ,, many by well known bushcraft ,, survival and gear creators ,, that yours is the "FIRST ONE" I have come across that does so ,, WELL DONE ,,and Thank You !! ... Probably my biggest pet peeves is not showing clearing a reasonable area on a densely covered forest floor ,,and then constructing a twig stove or small fire of any kind ,,I think is irresponsible ... looking forward to more quality video's ...... Stay Safe and God Bless......

I do something similar to this but I used an ice cube tray and then pop the wax cubes out of the ice tray. However I think I’m going to switch to your way because I feel like your way would be less messy. Thank you very much. God bless you and your family and friends. Duane

This is a great recipe! I am going to make a batch for myself and then a batch for my sister as a (essentially) no cost holiday present! Maybe I'll buy her a Stasher to keep them in ;) Thanks for sharing!

I basically do the same except, I cut toilet paper and paper towel rolls to size - long enough to fold in both ends after I have the filter lint or paper in and before tying. Works every time.

Curious as to the weight of the paper vs the lint, once they are completed... I know they will very a bit; but would like to know the difference, however much it is.
Great stuff on your channel thus far! Really like what I see.

I made the lint ones once and it stunk so bad. I do not know if it was because of my fabric softener, so I never used them again. I will be making ones with paper, no stinking. Thanks.

Can i just use cotton balls dip in wax instead?
Will the wax coat left residue in the ground? I plan to make some of these to put in our BBQ to starts the charcoals and i just wonder if the wax will be stick at the bottom once it cool off?

I recommend buying a block of paraffin wax from a craft store (or I'm sure online) rather than using candles. It's a bit cheaper and easier to manage/melt. :-)

They also sell wax chips and wax flakes in the candle making section of craft stores too - even easier!
P.s. these items can be ordered online as well

The paper version and the dryer lint version are very similar. They both burn for about 10 minutes. Either option is great, but I usually choose the dryer lint version because I have a lot of dryer lint to use up.

I usually stay away from anything scened while camping to help avoid attracting animals. Definitely don't want anything scented while in bear country.
