Just did mine while I had everything out of the way to replace the seized AC compressor.

      Wow! What a job!

@@FixingWithPassion Yep, not fun but I made it worth while and replaced spark plugs, fuel pressure regulator, serpentine belt & pulleys, thermostat, AC compressor & accumulator, and of course, air filter. Probably saved $1500+ paying a garage to do it all. The bad news is the AC compressor won't engage... will be digging into that soon. Cheap Amazon compressor, should have tested the clutch with 12 volts before installing... we'll see.

Been there, done that. I'd replace that lower radiator hose while there. Mine failed open as well with a code P0128.

Why didn't they put the thermostat on the top hose?

02 trailblazer, it was pain to change the thermostat but I didn't remove computer or fuel lines, just removed alternator. And battery

Pretty nasty design flaw by GM. Most normal engines run anywhere between 160-195 so the average driver wouldn't notice anything until the heat stops working. Meanwhile the computer's dumping fuel constantly trying to get the engine up to 210 which is the atlas' actual operating temp. This will wreck the converter if left unchecked and you don't always get a code. Just did my converter a week ago lemme tell you that's not a fun job especially in the land of corrosion!

My water pump failed this past week - knocking, wobbling, and spewing coolant, so that was my Saturday mission. I'm wishing I had bought a new thermostat to do while I had everything torn apart, but wasn't thinking about it. I had to change the water pump and alternator (as the coolant spraying all over it was fouling it out). Changed the belt, tensioner, idler, and fan clutch while I was at it. Can't believe I didn't think about the thermostat considering I was easily able to access it with the alternator out. If I had another car functioning, I would have gone and bought one and threw it in there. Oh well - I never really had problems with it thus far, hopefully it hangs in there a while so I don't have to redo all that stuff right away.
