Hey @VanessaJoy! You did a great job showing off the lens! Quick question to you or anyone. What handheld light were you using to get that amazing golden hour look? Thanks in advance! 🙏
Does this have the macro feature the 1.8 STM version has? Because I'm come to love that lens while shooting detail stuff. Still one of my favorite RF lens.
Hi VJ, Nice lens, But I think I will stick with my 28/70, It is heavy but I am still paying it off. It's like a Photographer fitness program due to the weight! LOL thanks as always for the info.... YOU ROCK!
stick on 1.8 IS or Sigma or old 35mm L if u are making not superb pro or professional i think even professional will be happy with their old 35mm. 😄 i expect too 1.2 L bcuz is modern era ist RF but only 1.4 not the image quality af is there but the feelings of 1.2 is still Supreme .
This looks like an intriguing lens, but I guess part of me wonders about how convenient changing the aperture will be with the ring, rather than establishing an aperture for videography before shooting. Having done videos in the past, I could meter the set, determine my lighting arrangements with a light meter, identify the desired shots, frame the shots, and determine the necessary f/stop settings I would use. A lot of video filming is done with f4 or f5.6, rather than very shallow depth of field. Another issue with video at wider f/stops is the issue of needing neutral density filters to prevent blowing out the highlights. As much as I like both my Canon and Nikon cameras, for video, I still prefer a dedicated video camera. From the cinematic side there are so many great choices from a lot of different vendors, including Canon. It will be interesting to see how this lens is adopted for video on an R6 MK II or R5 MK II.
I was asking the same thing. I’m not a big video guy or anything but how often do you really need to tweak the aperture while rolling? I mean I know it happens but it seems like a low percentage even. Certainly not enough to shoot yourself in the foot… and then (presumably) doing it repeatedly with each new lens in this “hybrid” lineup. Which is laughable to try to specify it as such since everything is hybrid these days.
@@highlyunprofessionalreviews In such case it would need a front filter for being weather sealed - this should be mentioned in a thorough review, though. It's a little annoyance with the otherwise brilliant RF 50 1.2 already...
Is all of the focusing happening internally? What I mean is, the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS/STM Macro lens has a barrel that extends when focusing. Does that happen on this lens?
Aperture ring not working in Photo mode is a really stupid idea. It is such a nice feeling to change aperture like that (miss that on fujifilm lenses) and i think sony does that too. Please make the ring work in photo mode in new firmware..
exactly. Was thinking of going back to Canon after being with Fuji for that very reason. To me it's all about the experience of taking the photo, not just the finally result. And an aperture ring is fun to use. Plus you can set it before even turning on the camera.
For the price, it's sad this lens still suffers from fairly bad chromatic abberation. And because of the VC motor, when the lens is off, the elements inside rattle quite violently if shaken at all (like your sensor does in mirrorless cams when off, but much louder). Makes me worry about the longevity of the lens.
Hi! We recommend giving our lens support team a call about these concerns. They can let you know what's normal and what isn't and how to resolve any issues you might be experiencing with it. They're open weekdays and Saturdays (excluding major holidays) at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666). Hope to talk to you soon!
If the rumors are correct, this isn't the only major Canon intro this year that shows a move away from stills and toward video shooters. That useless-for-stills aperture ring says a lot. Time marches on, stills shooters. Time to change with the times!
I can’t believe they would do a video only aperture ring. Absolute nonsense. I mean if you’re going to screw photographers, just go on ahead and just make it a T-stop ring. Guess I’m not surprised they have to screw up something on everything they release. As usual. 🔨
If you don't like the not-for-stills-shooters aperture ring, you might want to avoid the R5 mk.ii introduction. Canon has clearly decided the market has moved away from stills and toward video.
@@nict3630 exactly. Or if you're going to cripple your lenses. At least give Sigma the go-ahead for some RF Art and C lenses. They at least have an aperture ring you can use for both video and photo. Plus have it click or -de-clicked, which actually makes sense.

Found it! It’s a Hobolight! Luckily you answered someone else who asked in the comments! Thanks Vanessa! 🙏
This was long overdue. Great job with the initial recap of the lens. Keep up the great work.
thx!
Thank you Canon! This lens is no-brainer 😎
right?
What light is that you’re using?
Vanessa, I always enjoy watching you explore the light…
Been waiting for a RF version of the infamous EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. Love using 35mm focal length for dance photography.
Is it just 1.4 for now right? I m going to pre-order, but want to make sure that you won’t release 1.2 in half year.
The price point is not bad at all… so looking forward to getting this camera 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Very interested in this lens. Thank you for this video Joy. But I am curious if you can tell us how it did in low light situations. TIA!
was great - those engagement photos were practically in the dark!
What is the hand held light you are using? :)
Please make an RF pancake lens like 40mm 2.8
KD I see you! Great shoot too! Lens is awesome
I was hoping for an F1.2 but I am disappointed. Now I'm going to complain about it here in your comments as if you made the decision.
lol
I’m happy I’m not the only one disappointed that this isn’t a 1.2 😢

Amazing - when can we see it in stores?

I don't shoot with Canon but this is cool. Why so much whining about 1.4 over 1.2? 🙄
Where is the “is”?
In the camera. It keeps this lens a lightweight 🇺🇸
