Again, Liza and I are joined by our friend, Eugene-Oregon-based Eliot Grasso on flute for our instrumental version of the beautiful Scottish traditional song "The Skye Boat Song”. This version features flute, guitar and uillean pipe which accompanies the beautiful Scottish countryside with all its castles, open seas and strong women.

Such a beautiful song. I have to say, though, that the first version I ever heard was, well, interesting. On the album that really introduced Tom Jones and "It's Not Unusual" to American audiences, a perusal of the track listing also shows "Skye Boat Song". We all love Tom Jones - he's truly a huge influence on me, amazing singer, great pitch, blue-eyed soul - thanks Aunt Chabuca for bringing him into our household when you came to take care of me when I was an infant, and you, visiting America from Peru, immediately picked up on those gyrating Welsh hips. His first album had more than a fair share of "swingin' London" arrangements. "Memphis Tennessee" rocks on that album. "Skye Boat Song" does not. But it merits mention as the first time, as a toddler, that I heard and memorized that melody. When I first played his version for our Scottish-American pal Lisa, she recoiled in palpable terror. Makes me laugh thinking about it.
This is the fourth release with our pal Eliot on it - prior releases have been "Rainbow Connection", "Bella Notte", and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", all Disney favorites - "Rainbow Connection" wasn't originally but now the Muppets are a Disney property. We met Eliot while performing music from Liza’s “Nottingham” release to accompany the Ballet Fantastique in May 2024. He is a very bright guy, dedicated to music, and also teaches at the forward-thinking Gutenberg College in Eugene. Excellent musician and beautiful family - his wife is the online Disney Cicerone who is steeped in Disney lore.
