After watching so many characters get "whacked" over the course of 6 seasons, David Chase lets the viewer "experience" what it is to die, suddenly. He put us in Tony's position. We ( the audience ) were the last ones to get "offed." It was brilliant.

After all the recent events to put himself in the position, sat out in public like that, to get whacked....a little outta character....hes formally showed great street smarts, animal cunning and a survival instinct second to almost none previously.

Also had Meadow been there on time by parking correctly, the hit man would’ve had to take a different approach because of Meadows presence and possibly the code of not hurting family members. Also 3 cub scouts, 3 creamers with the guys coffee, the bathroom is at 3, there is only 3 of them, the waitress brings only 3 cokes, and between the three of them they eat 3 onion rings in a ceremonial way…..just seems like the number 3 is everywhere within this scene and show like uncle junior talking about death in 3’s,. So his life as a criminal began and ended in that restaurant, and 9 is opposite of 3 so this was just the beginning. The Mason theory, I, not so sure as I’m a Freemason. It really is interesting to see a Holstens and all these little things that ended up making Tony who Tony was. Also they show a football players and nfl a lot through sopranos we see some football players in the background of Holstens. It is so obvious. The guy in the 'Members Only Jacket' was one of Phil's guys. In the second to last episode where Phil says ''cut off the head and we can do business with the rest'' The last guy to leave Phil's meeting was the Member's Only Jacket. He is in the restaraunt, sitting at the counter, looking at Tony in the background ever since he came in the diner . Since Phil was killed in front of his family, they wanted to do the same with Tony.
Members Only is waiting for Meadow to finally come in. Once she does, he goes to the bathroom, so when he comes out, he will be behind Tony. Tony was shot in the head in front of his family. The entire last season, the saying was always 'You never see it coming'. The sudden darkness was because.....he didn't see it coming....

“It looks like it weighs a ton”

The hitman was scanning for a "clean shot" at Tony. The fact Meadow was delayed in arriving due to her bad parking attempts, allowed the hitman to believe there won't be anyone next to Tony to obscure his hit, so he determined the best angle was from coming out of the Men's room. If Meadow arrived on time, the "No Women No Kids" rule would have saved Tony. But it didn't, as if the hit was pre-destined. Tony's time was up, as all his best lieutenants are either dead, incapacitated like Silvio or have betrayed his crime family. This was Tony's most vulnerable, but he didn't seem concerned right after having killed the boss of a major New York crime family? He was in a subconscious way, ready to die. Who can avenge Tony after he is killed? No one. Without him there is no more North Jersey mafia.

meadow is tony's guardian angel, the beginning of season 6 episode 1 clearly tells us that when she is dancing around her living room and it says number 3 is khu the guardian angel. and its her voice that stops him from dying and calls him out of the coma. she also saves him on the college trip and when she removes the bugged lamp. throughout the whole series it is very clear how meadow is the apple of his eye and AJ is a symbol of tony's failures and bad genetics. but meadow is like a pure perfect angel that is very special to him. but she did not make it to the diner on time, therefore she couldn't save him. Had she not been late she would have occupied the seat next to tony and blocked the gunshot from the 3 oclock position. of course tony would happily take the shot in meadows place. of course if not for carmela having meetings with carpenters and changing dinner plans to Holsten's the shooting wouldnt have happened. she was supposed to make manicotti, but then told tony and Aj the concensus was holsten's. the dinner at holsten's is their last supper. notice how tony carmela and aj place the onion ring on their tongues like a communion wafer. David chase did some beautiful storytelling. He is a family man and i know his daughter was in the show as hunter scangerello who mysteriously reappears in the final episode. He definitely drew from his Italian upbringing and his relationship with his mother in writing the show. I think he also drew from his love of his daughter Michele and that reflects in tony's love for meadow. Its possible the show is a message to his daughter.

The analysis on how Tony's soul is in a loop is reminiscent of what Christopher said hell is like.
Every day his dad plays poker in an Irish bar and loses, then every night they whack him just like they did in life.
Tony's hell is sitting in a diner, smelling the best onion rings in the world, waiting to see his daughter. And all day they tell him she's coming. And as soon as the bell dings, they whack him the same way they did in life. And it resets.
This is odd because Tony is shot from the three o'clock position. In the same episode, after Christopher tells them about hell, he tells Tony and Paulie "Three o'clock".
In other words, this show is fucking GOLD!

that’s a great observation regarding the Irish bar loop! Also at 3:08 the old woman has no face like some creepy demon if you pause a better HD copy. So I’m pretty sure that was hell. And the diner appears to be a collection of things from his life. 7:07 back wall is a reminder of his HS football varsity days (Junior reference?). The USA cap guy maybe his childhood friend, the actor who played the liquid metal terminator? 7:29 looks like Giuliana Margueles. 7:36 looks like Janice. The young couple at 8:20 reminds of Christopher and Adrianna, seated like they’re about to enjoy his execution. Or it could remind Tony of the happier days Carmela shared when they were young given the timing of her entry. Then there’s the members only guy, who represents the capo that hung himself because Tony wouldn’t let him go. The bathroom move is an ode to The Godfather where Pacino shoots the police sergeant in the restaurant. And Tony is shot from 3 o’clock . Just like how Tony killed Christopher from 3 o’clock. Not entirely sure what the cub scouts represent. Maybe his childhood years…. And the lights out ending is setup by Bobby’s statement about death at the lake with Tony.

Just as the mansion in Tony's dream, the diner is a room full of ghosts. Tony's ghosts: the athlete paintings, the young couple (Chris and Adriana), the old man with the kids in sports suits, the always present scapegoat in Tony's mobster stories of the "two black men", and finally... Eugene Pontecorvo back from the dead in his Members Only jacket. All magnificently put tohether to signal Tony's end.

I had a near death once, as a teenager, that was, by the roots, very similar to what the character Tony goes through here. I never saw a tunnel, or light, or old family, instead I was sitting in a wooden chair in complete darkness. What then happened is I became aware of another in this dark room, and as I focused on it, I began to hear the most beautiful music, so inviting I wanted to get up and walk to the source. At this point a faint multicolor boundary line appeared, similar to the effect of red-blue-green ground spot lights at night, all lined in a single row. On the other side of this boundary was a dark figure sitting on a wooden chair. This presence was not scary and it was also very familiar. As I focused on the figure I noticed it was making gestures for me to walk over. I wanted to walk over very bad, but my legs felt tired and heavy, and my rear end felt glued to the seat. I knew I could walk over but I'd have to make a big effort to do so and I began to see a other option of doing nothing at all. I chose this option and I began to open my eyes intermittently, into a world of pain where paramedics were slapping me in the face asking me all these questions. I kept going back and forth, and I never saw disappointment in the beckoning figure in the wooden chair, and I never saw acceptance either, but I did discover who the figure was as well as the real nature of the boundary line... The figure was me.

I went into full shock and unconsciousness, but strangely never forgot the moments right before the fall and also how it felt to be falling knowing I'd be landing soon.
These memories are peaceful and my fall felt like slow motion. I never felt pain until I was awakened by paramedics, and then of course, terribe pain for 10 days in the hospital afterwards and months of recovery and therapy.
Life ain't easy, thats for sure.
I wrote all this down back then and committed what I could to memory so I could find someone else who had a similar experience. Most NDEs mention the tunnel and loved ones but mine was much more internally profound, especially as to who I am in the past, present and future.
Thinking on it now I feel that the figure who was sharing in my near death experience was an older potential self, joking with me about crossing over.
Its weird cause I knew I could walk over, but chose not to do so. My body wasn't ready as it now had more potential to survive being in the hands of paramedics who initially were lost and took more time to find me. Once they arrived is when I started to come back to my 3d flesh and this reality.
After my body began having more potential to survive it was now up to my mind, or self, to willingly come back to it, and face the pain of healing and life once more.
...I chose this world smiling mockingly like my future self, because I know that no matter what the pain is, I won't give up so soon on life just yet. 'Nice try', to myself, I said that day.

I guess you can say I was conscious of myself the entire time, but my reality went inward and outward... Of course this says nothing about what it would have been liked if I crossed over.
When I was a baby I was premature by a month and was on lifesupport to breath and such. Then at like 5 I had surgery because my large and small intestinal flap was stuck closed. Then at 16 this near fatal deck fall.

I love the point you made about the final person coming to the diner is the person he cares the most about. His torture in the afterlife, never seeing her again. Here’s my breakdown: 1) The painting of the house in the diner on the back wall represents the mansion he went to in his coma. 2) The tiger represents Adriana, as she always wore leopard-print and died crawling on all fours. Plus, the song she wanted to produce had the chorus “meaow”. 3) He’s wearing the same bowling shirt as the one he was shot in by uncle June. 4) The two black guys represent the two guys who tried to take him out in season 1. 4) The cub scouts and the old man potentially represent those who may have found Valery’s body (the Russian ex-commando). 5) The guy in the ‘members only’ jacket looks similar enough to Eugene Pontecorvo. Eugene was wearing THE EXACT SAME jacket when Vito busted his balls about it. This guy could be related to Eugene (a brother/cousin), and fuelled by his own sense of revenge along with Eugene’s wife (“his master calls”), took out a hit on Tony. 6) The picture of the football player is Tony as the athlete he never became. 7) The trucker with the baseball cap IS Dave Scatino, played by Robert Patrick. 8) Meadow’s two failed parking attempts represent the two failed attempts on Tony’s life. She gets it right third time around.
I’m writing a book on the Sopranos, and am looking for people who are interested in collaborating. I will only choose one person. Get in touch if you’re interested.

The more I think about this scene
    It is very eerie.
When AJ and the Members only guy walk in. Tony looks twice at him rather than at AJ .
Also Tony is seated in a particular place in the restruant. He could have sat anywhere so why that seat thats facing the door?
When the members only guy goes to the bathroom to get the gun that seat would be the only one he would have visibility on from the bathroom hallway.
This leads me to believe that this scene is a memory sequence from Tony where he is constantly stuck in an infinite loop of getting whacked.
Because if Tony was suspicious enough to look twice at the guy, then why not move seats or at least confront him? He also looks fairly bored to the point where he already knows whats about to happen. I also think the fact that Tony doesnt recognize AJs statement about remembering the good times means that he has only been experiencing bad times which one could assume is that Tony is rotting in this Diner Hell where he lost all hope of there ever being good times again.

With theory B, a blackout, Tony awakens back to his disaster of a life, with the gang war, and the Feds closing in, and his alienated wife, and failed son, and corrupted daughter, and imminent years in prison, and at the end Alzheimer's like his uncle. This is what I imagine when I want to get even with Tony, to give him what he deserves. But if I'm feeling merciful, and I want to be nice to Tony, then the blackout is him getting his brains blown out in front of his family.

There's another video on RUclips that breaks the ending down perfectly. Basically the creators gave us hints throughout the last ew episodes of the series, and if you follow the hints you know the truth about what happened to Tony at the finale. He was killed, unfortunately. There's a pattern of cues throughout the final episodes that don't really seem like much until you put them all together. The bell on the door in the diner is key. When it rings you see Tony's face, then see what Tony sees. On the final ring we see his face, and then see black. Before this, Tony had a discussion with Bobby about death and Bobby speculated that when it happens you don't hear or see anything. This foreshadows what happens to Tony.

There's some real good theories here, but in the end I think one thing that I remember reading years ago holds true and that's that the producers of the show and the cast realized how much the audience came to love Tony Soprano (even though he was a thug and a criminal) and that they didn't want the audience to watch him getting shot dead.
As to what happened to Tony Soprano, I think the entire scene in the diner spells it out - whether he is whacked that night or sometime in the future or he gets indicted things do not end well for Tony. I remember during one of the episodes from one of the earlier seasons that Tony tells Dr. Melfi that he's "a fat crook from Jersey" and that "there's two ways it ends for a guy like me - dead or in the can." Tony knew that the life he chose would not end well and it doesn't.

The bell on the door of the pizza place dings, we see Tonys face and then we see what he sees. This happens when his wife comes in, his son comes in, the assassin comes in, some random lady comes in. Dingdingding, Tonys face, then a shot of what Tony sees. The assassin walks right by Tony, who notices him but pays no attention to him at all. A few seconds later, Meadow enters the pizza place. Dingdingding, a shot of Tony's face and cut to black which is what Tony sees as the assassin kills him. Its simple and jarring and brilliant.

I’ve never seen the full series but this video just made me quit weed. I have lung disease (not COVID) and many doctor visits. This made me think of how if I do die I can’t bring bad habits and all worldly things to heaven. I’m done livin for my body and startin to live for my soul. I thank the writers and everyone involved in makin this show tho Ik they’ll never see this. Bad things you do in your life are baggage to the soul and I urge u to drop any bad dealings ur doin in ur life. Strive for goodness and your life will be better. Thanks.

I can see how the ending was to let the viewer feel the perspective of being "offed". Like Bobby said, "lights out."
When I was in a bad car wreck, I guess my head hit something in the car, I was unconscious from Brain injury/intracerebral hemmorhage, internal damage in my body. I don't remember the accident, nor that entire day. I just remember waking up in ICU immense pain and a blur despite whatever medications the hospital administered to me through IV.
But yes, everything just ceases to exist, your mind turns off like a switch. There is nothing once you "die". Don't know how or why I'm alive now, everything is surreal and hard to live with now.
